What to do with a 302 redirect after a while
-
Hi guys,
A client of ours has a website with a very bad linkprofile. We adressed this issue and we migrated the website to another domain.
We redirected the bad website (cornelisbedding.be) to the new domain (cornelisbedding.com) with a 302 redirect. We didn't want to pass the bad link juice. The problem we are having now is that we can't afford to lose the redirect on cornelisbedding.be. We would lose to much traffic because the old domain still has alot of links that generate good quality traffic.
I have read that Google will treat 302 redirects as 301's in the long run. We really want to avoid this.
We were thinking of using a meta refresh with a delay on, but in Google's eyes that would be considered spammy. Are their any other suggestions on how to handle this?
Thanks you!

Hi,
Sorry I'm late - I must have missed the notification on this one. I recommend against using any redirects that pass link equity so long as there's a manual penalty on the site.
I have seen penalties transfer - usually Panda or Penguin will only be re-applied on the refresh, but if the signal is fairly strong or the penalty is manual the penalty can transfer within days. Sometimes the penalty doesn't transfer, and it's usually because either the content is significantly different from what was penalized (in which case the links just don't count) or because the new site has a bunch of good links to balance things out.
If I were you, I'd keep marketing the new site, build some awareness, and avoid passing link equity until the old site is clean.

I'd second that motion!
-
True, I guess I'd also test this with some other domain before doing it on an important corporate site. Would be great to read about someone's experience with this!
-
In theory, absolutely. I just think the disavow tool and its effectiveness is a bit of a grey area.
Call me paranoid, but I'd rather not associate any old domain that has had a penalty, lifted or otherwise, with a new domain in any way shape or form. Like I say though, that could be overkill.
-
Couldn't an alternative be to disavow all links in Webmaster Tools pointing to the OLD domain and then still use 301 redirects? By using the disavow tool, the old domain should be in the clear, no?
-
If you don't want the link profile to eventually pass, but still rely on the redirect to drive traffic to the site, then the simple answer is that you need to market the new site more.
Obviously, this includes promoting the new .com domain's search visibility more, but the other option is to put a notice on the old .be domain. If you put up a one page site with a good graphic design along the lines of "We have moved, please find our new site at" etc - without a link, I hasten to add - you're giving people the chance to recognise the move, update their bookmarks and not visit the old site any more. You could even put a notice saying "This site will cease to exist from XXXX" to really let people know you've permanently moved.
It's probably the clearest way to show that the domain has moved, without passing any of the old link profile to the new domain.
Hope this helps.

302 from landingspage to language page
Hi Everyone, A client of us has a Belgian website in 2 different languages, in French and in Dutch.
Technical SEO | | WeAreDigital_BE
We make use of hreflang tags, so each user gets to see the website in their preferred language. The landingspage on the website however, let's say www.example.be, has a 302 redirect to the French version of the website (www.example.be/fr/). And Dutch users get to see the Dutch version (www.example.be/nl/) of the website when they browse to www.example.be . Now, I want to get rid of the 302 redirect. Should I replace it to a 301 redirect, without sending every user automatically to one of the 2 versions? Should I just remove the redirect? Or should I just leave it this way? I would love to hear your thoughts on this. Jens0 -
301 Redirect Timing Questions
Hey all, Quick question on 301 redirects and the timing of creating them when transitioning from an old site to a new site. Does the timing matter? Can redirects interfere with DNS propigation (which seemed to happen to us when we did redirects minutes after redirecting someone's DNS A record to now point to the new site) And lastly, how long AFTER a new site launch can one still submit redirects and not lose the google juice? All the best,

301 Redirects in subfolders
Hi, we're making our site into a static site but I would like to transfer the Google juice. Most of the links and database exist on subfolders though. Could I simply do 301 redirects on the subfolders and retain the value or does it have to be on the full domain?

Would an automatic redirect to itunes affect SEO?
We recently started working on a website and most of the work done so far is resolving onsite technical issues (duplicate content, duplicate titles, broken links, pagespeed, grammar, etc.). Everything done has been positive, but their position in SERPs has actually gone down. I'm having a look to see if anything I have done could have had a negative effect. However, when visiting their website on a mobile device, it automatically redirects you to iTunes so that you can download their app. My first instinct is that this is a horrendous idea as it would result in a massive bounce rate which would be impossible to track. I have tried convincing them to do it differently, but this is how they want it. However, when googlebot visits the website as a mobile it returns an error. I'm fairly sure that this would have a negative effect on search results but I could do with a second opinion.

Compare URLs with 302 redirects
Hello I have a store which was developed in Magento. I have about 8300 errors like this: URL: http://www.theprinterdepo.com/catalog/product_compare/add/product/100/uenc/aHR0cDovL3d3dy50aGVwcmludGVyZGVwby5jb20vcHJpbnRlci1wYXJ0cy5odG1sP3A9NA,,/ 1 Warning 302 (Temporary Redirect) Found 3 days ago <dl> <dt>Redirects to</dt> <dt>http://goo.gl/XMaZg</dt> <dd>Description</dd> <dd>Using a 302 redirect will cause search engine crawlers to treat the redirect as temporary and not pass any link juice (ranking power). We highly recommend that you replace 302 redirects with 301 redirects.</dd> </dl> <a class="more expanded">Minimize</a> These URLs, are generated by magento by the COMPARE feature. In my store we bought an extension called SEO Enterprise Suite and I asked the developers(www.mageworx) about this error. Their answer is: Sorry for the late reply. Our extension adds NOINDEX,FOLLOW tag to compare and cookies pages so that they won't be indexed. I do not think that these redirects can hurt your SEO because these pages won't be indexed at all. The question is: What should I do? Is there anyway that SEOMOZ ignores these URLs? What should I do next, I just dont like to have that HIGH number of errors and warnings. Thank you

301 redirects and OSE
We run a blog/video real estate site (yochicago.com) as one of the venues for sponsored content for our clients looking for off-page SEO and inbound links. I'm working with a client who we've linked to a handful of times in the last few weeks, but I'm not seeing any external links from our site on PRO/OSE. Come to find that our writer has been linking to http://clientsite.com, instead of http://www.clientsite.com, which is the canonical site. I wouldn't have thought that this would make a difference, and about an hour of web research seems to confirm that it shouldn't make a difference, save for losing a little bit of SEO credit. What am I missing? Any input would be appreciated.
