Help with 301 redirect code
-
Hi,
I can't work out how to make this one work and would apreciate if someone could help.
i have a series of folders from a old site that are in the structure:
/c/123456/bags.html (the "123456" changes and is any series of 6 digit numbers), and the "bags.html" changes depending on the product.
I need that to be 301 redirected to the following format:
/default/bags/bags.html -
Hi Paul,
As Andy mentioned earlier, the complexity here comes by the fact that these IDs cannot be simply removed since they play a role in the Magento product/category system.
The first step would be that you identify how these are generated to identify the best way to optimize it to become relevant or at least doesn't add more depth and complexity in the URL structure.
I've seen that there's a URL rewrite area in Magento with some system configuration options that you might want to take a look here and to this in-depth guide explaining Magento URL rewrites.
I've also seen that a similar question has been asked in Stackoverflow and as you can see the potential alternatives discussed here goes into Magento's system configuration.
Hope this helps!
Aleyda

no worries Andy, I really appreciate you trying

it would be hard to do without knowing the system really well, though that plugin maybe able to help. The reason is that if those codes change they could mean any category - the last bit is likely not an issue of product name as url, but the category bit isn't so easy - unless it can be ignored and pulled from the CMS - again not being a magento expert I don't know how this would be done. sorry.

Thanks Andy, i'll take a look.
I'm no htaccess guru, but was hoping that there was some sort of wildcard that could:
find "any product" (eg bags.html) in categories /c/123456/ and redirect to /default/bags/i just can't get my head around it. Is there a * or ? or combination? as it would need to pick up the changing 6 digits
-
oh erm sounds a little odd set up - maybe worth trying http://shop.ecomdev.org/url-rewrite-indexer.html
-
thanks guys.
Andy...
yes, i need the new format to be /default/category/bags.html (but the bags.html will vary with whatever the original product is).
The category has no relation to the new category. It was generated by a old cms system and seems to fluctuate.
Yes, it is a Magento shopping cartTom,
yes, it is .htaccess>
I have added some other 301 redirects successfully, but can't work out how to change the 6 digit category, while still making sure the end product (eg bags.html) redirects to bags.html in the new structure.I hope that makes sense?
Thanks

Hi there
First of all, does your site use an .htaccess file? This is probably the most common solution used to implement 301 redirects. The SEOMoz guide to redirection is really useful in explaining how to implement redirects for apache servers and others.
These three generators can create the code for you, but it's very important to learn how the .htaccess file works before trying to implement it. Therefore, you should acquaint yourself fully with the Moz guide linked above.
Alternatively, if your site is running WordPress, you can setup 301 redirects very easily with the Yoast SEO plugin.
Hope these resources help.

ok this needs clarifying
so your old urls want to be of the format /default/category/bags.html yes?
does the category relate to the 6 digit number in some way?
Are you using a shopping care of some kind or is this a bespoke system?

301 Redirects from Subdomain to Location Pages
I have a client site that is getting redesigned. Its a multi location service provider. Currently (for whatever reason) the location pages are sub domains. https://<location-name>.site.com/ In the new design the locations will be on the main domain. https://site.com/locations/<location-name> We are considering using 301 redirects from the current sub domains to the new location pages on the main domain. The current sub domains are setup on a multi-site with A records for each one in our GoDaddy account. Would like to get feedback on any unforeseen SEO issues that anyone might have input on.

301 redirects for all urls - legal dispute
The website in question is a very high traffic website with substantial credibility in it's subject matter (sorry, can't share more details) that delivers an overwhelming majority of traffic from SEO, much of which is new visitors. A legal dispute has resulted in both parties agreeing to forward a percentage of the total URLs to alternative websites (only 1 website for each party). All URLs for the domain will be forwarded elsewhere. It does not make sense to me that the "sum of the parts" will be as strong once the redirects are implemented but I am looking for feedback. It is fair to say that the alternative domains of each party are no where near as strong as the domain being "parted out." Will the SEO juice be distributed to each domain in full? Will both parties lose out substantially? Feel free to ask for clarifications and I'll do the best I can given the legal parameters. Thanks.

Migration to New Domain - 301 Redirect Questions
My client is migrating their site to a new domain. I just did a big redesign, including URL structure change, and 301s from old URLs to new URLs. Now they want a new name, so we're moving forward with a new domain name. However, we're going to keep the site on the current domain while we ease customers into the new name. During that time, I'm going to be building links to the new domain name and 301 Redirecting that new one to the current domain name. Then, once we migrate the site to the new domain name, I'm then going to redirect the current domain name to the new domain name. So, my question(s) is/are: Is the above process the best way to use 301 redirects to to build links to the new domain while we transition everything? Should I (or can I) do 3 redirects from the oldest URLs, to the current URLs then to the new URLs? General question... I can't seem to find this anywhere online, but what is the best practice for what order URLs should be in in the htaccess file? Thanks!

301 redirect of a subdirectory
Hello! I am working on a website with the following structure: example.com/sub1/sub2/sub3. The page "example.com/sub1" does not exist (I know this is not the optimal architecture to have this be a nonexistent page). But someone might type that address, so I would like it to redirect it to example.com/sub1/sub2/sub3. I tried the following redirect: redirect 301 /sub1 http://example.com/sub1/sub2/sub3. But with this redirect in place, if I go to example.com/sub1, I get redirected to example.com/sub1/sub2/sub3/sub2/sub3 (the redirect just inserts extra subdirectories). If someone types "example.com/sub1" into a browser, I would "example.com/sub1/sub2/sub3" to come up. Is this possible? Thank you!

301 Redirect From Dynamic Page To Static
I want to 301 redirect all "id" and "type" numbers from my page dynamic.php page (I have thousands of IDs and thousands of Types) all to a single URL. So for example the following.... www.mysite.com/dynamic.php?id=1&type=5 www.mysite.com/dynamic.php?id=2&type=5 www.mysite.com/dynamic.php?id=3&type=5 www.mysite.com/dynamic.php?id=1&type=6 www.mysite.com/dynamic.php?id=2&type=6 www.mysite.com/dynamic.php?id=3&type=6 ...would all be sent to: www.mysite.com/page.html How can this be done without doing a redirect for each ID/Type?

301 Redirects - SEO Benefit?
Hello, Years ago, our company started out as a Yahoo store. We've since moved onto another website with its own shopping cart but since the Yahoo store is almost 10 years old, there's a lot of history there and it still exists with the occasional order. We currently use it for reputation management purposes with links to our real ecommerce site but we're thinking of just redirecting the Yahoo store to our ecommerce site. Is there any SEO benefit in doing this? We were also kind of penalized by Panda. Would this help us out at all (the descriptions on both sites could be considered duplicate content).

301 redirect to 1 of 3 locations based on browser languge? Is this ok?
Hi all, I'm taking over a site that has some redirect issues that need addressed and I want to make sure this is done right the first time. The problem: Our current setup starts with us allowing both non-www and www pages. I'll address this with a proper rewrite so all pages will have www. Server info: IIS and runs PHP. The real concern is that we currently run a browser detection for language at the root and then do a 302 redirect to /en, /ge or /fr. There is no page at the www.matchware.com. It's an immediate redirect to a language folder. I'd like to get these to a 301(Permanent) redirect but I'm not sure if a URL can have a 301 redirect that can go to 3 different locations. The site is huge and a site overhaul is not an option anytime soon. Our home page uses this: <%
