Keywords/URL
-
Greetings! I've read previous posts on this topic, but wondering if something has changed recently...On the on-page grading, the following was suggested:Use Keywords in your URL - high importance - easy fix _(In the past it has read difficult fix). _Could it be as easy as creating a new page with the name in the url, then redirecting to it? My site is www.enchantingquotes.com and the keyword that brings in virtually all of business is "wall quotes". I've read in the forum this isn't worth the trouble of trying to do, but the "easy fix" comment has me wondering...?Any help is much appreciated....I'm been trying to recover from a recent unexplained drop in rank. Ugh! (So feel free to analyze my site LOL!) :DA huge thanks for any advise!

Thank you, Peter. I will analyze sites 3-6 and try to figure out what happened. I appreciated all of the help.

Hi Cindy
Without more details it's difficult to pinpoint what the reason may be and even with details sometimes it's not possible to say categorically that 'this' is because of 'that'.
I recommend you doing a competitor analysis of the top ten ranked sites for the keyword you used to rank 3 for but now 7. In particular, have a detailed look at the sites that have snuck ahead of your site in those positions (so positions 3-6) to see if you can identify any metrics where they may now be out-performing your site. Is there anything that could make the page they are ranking for (and their site on a wider scale), possibly more relevant for the search.
As I say, there may just be pointers which may or may not have made the difference, but there may be something more definitive you can identify.

Hi Cindy. My stores used to be on Yahoo Merchant Solutions, so I know that changing things in that system can be tricky. Besides being a Moz member, you may also want to join the Yahoo Store Owners forum at yourstoreforums.com to get tech and marketing advice on Yahoo store issues.

Hi Peter,
I do not know how to change the URL of a page, other than to create a new one and do a redirect...
I had not made any changes to the site (other than adding new products here and there) prior to the page rank drop. Even though it is such a small page rank drop, it means several hundred $'s a day in this niche. I monitor page rank myself and I have been using the free trial here. It's been super helpful - hoping once I get this issue handled we'll be back up there
Thanks for your time!

Hi Cindy
Providing you can change the URL of your existing page you don't need to create a new page, just update the URL. If you cannot update the URL however, then yes, the only way will be to create a new page. In either case though you must create a 301 permanent redirect from the old URL to the new URL.
In terms of the traffic drop of the page, then that would have been due to the page dropping from #3 to #7. As Doug said, had you made any changes prior to that which could have caused the drop. In terms of anything Google may have done, it's possible, but difficult to pinpoint for relatively small drop like that.
How do you check where your page is ranking? If just by testing yourself in Google then you cannot be sure of that because of Google's personalisation of search results, so it's worth checking In Moz Pro by signing up for a free trial (if you haven't done that already) and using the Rank Checker tool. That will give you a much better view of where your page ranks for the country you check it from.

Thank you so much for the reply. I built the store using Yahoo Store Editor. Traffic dropped about a month ago (I heard buzz there was another Google update then). I went from #3 to #7 for keyword wall quotes. My on page grades are good but I can't get my rank back up.

It will be of varying degrees of difficulty depending on which platform your site is built on and your server. ie your server looks like it is Apache but I am not sure which cms your using?
Any ideas when your traffic dropped off and what changes you have made to your site around that time might help.

Keyword Research for Low Volume Keywords
Hey friends, I'm looking for a little keyword research direction here, specifically for keywords and phrases with low search volume. I'm just going to give a recent example: I just finished a piece of content on customer experience. I began the process with some keyword research. Based on Moz's keyword explorer, "customer experience" has a monthly volume of 2.9k-4.3k. Sweet. So I move onto related queries and longer tail phrases to narrow my content approach. But just about any relevant phrase shows either a volume of 0-10 or 11-50 and very similar difficulty metrics, making it tough to choose a direction. So "what is customer experience" shows a monthly volume of 0-10. SEM Rush reports ~350 searches a month. I understand SEM Rush uses broader match, but I guess what I'm asking is: how do I perform keyword research with such minuscule volumes and such little data to differentiate? I've looked at Russ Jones' answer to a similar question here on how Keyword Explorer works: https://moz.com/community/q/what-is-a-good-keyword-volume-score ... but I still don't have a ton of clarity. Any advice would be awesome!

Wrong page ranking for keyword.
I have a page i'm trying to rank for certain keywords around "emergency vet clinic" the page is domain.com/emergency-vet-care but my home page is the one that is ranking better and better. How can I get the other page to rank for e.g. "emergency vet care" , "emergency animal care" and the main page to rank for just regular vet care? My on page looks pretty good. I've also taken out most references to emergency care on the main home page except for the one link to it. Thanks

Sudden keyword rankings drop
Hi, My latest MOZ report has indicated there has been a significant drop in ranking for 65 keywords, some by as much as 30 places. This is not something I have experienced before and seems very drastic. Is there a reasonable explanation or fix for this? Thanks for any advice!

Weekly Keyword Ranking Report Question
Howdy folks! Okay so apologies for the n00b question, and additional apologies for going over ground that's potentially already been ploughed. I'm compiling a tally of the Weekly Keyword Ranking Report for a client. For the past three reports, the particular keyword I'm logging has remained in the same position. However the Change column shows it as having decreased in rank, by the same amount every week. If there has been no change in the ranking, I would have thought it would display as "Unchanged". As it stands, it shows up in the Declined category, and that seems odd to me. Anyone have an idea as to why this would be happening? Thanks for any input you can provide! Kevin

How many times to use a keyword on a page?
Okay, so i have read around, and watched Matt Cutts' video on this and read rand's post about this. But, I still have questions; how many times should I use a keyword on a page? I have read for shorter pages 2-3X and 4-6X for longer pages. I know to put it in the url title h1, the first paragraph and sprinkle it around the page. Is it all realtive to how long the content is? or should I just be following the 2-3X and 4-6X rule? Thanks for your help. Peter

A question about local longtail keywords
Hello all. This is my first interaction with SEOmoz, and I am still in my learning phases. I currently own a lawn fertilization company near Allentown, PA. I do the site for myself, and I am ranked number one for organic lawn care for my cities. My question may seem kind of elementary, but I just want to clear this up for myself. I want to start a side business doing SEO, and from what I gather step one is keyword research. I plan on building new sites to start as opposed to going in and fixing existing ones. So, I've been reading a lot on how to do keyword research and so forth. I will use my current business as a reference for my question. Should my main keywords be along the lines of "lawn care" and "lawn services", and then the location specific stuff be seperate? Or should my main keywords be "lawn care allentown, pa"? I plan on running my business solely for local businesses, so I am not to interested in competing with the entire world for keywords. I just wasn't sure how to differentiate my keyword research for local business. I hope that question made some sense. I am really starting to grasp the elements of SEO, but for some reason the keyword part of things perplexes me. Thanks for any responses!
