Geotargeting SEO
-
Hi,
We are and SEO company based in Scotland and have taken on a project where the client works in the UK but has distribution in mainland Europe and the US.
He currently is working off 3 websites targeted at each area Uk, US and Mainland Europe
We are going to rebuild one site and have each area on the site, however we are unsure if sub folders or sub domains would work better.
My personal opinion is that sub domains would be better, but I dont have information to back this
Can anyone advise? Any advice on geotargeting SEO also would be appreciated!
Many Thanks
Chris

Hi Chris
As with all things SEO it depends.
If you're working for a huge brand and have the budget it might make sense to have different cc-TLD's and target those to each market.
It's a common belief that subfolders are better than subdomains and Google treat a subdomain as a separate site so in terms of maintaining domain authority you might want to take this option.

It all will come down to budget, time and long term goals - do people in Germany prefer to see .de extensions do UK people trust .co.uk over .com?
The only advantage I have found for using sub-domains is you can host them on separate servers quite easily - but you can get similar benefits with a CDN.

Hi Chris,
Take a look at some of Aleyda's posts: http://moz.com/community/users/14053
Working on an international project and am using a combination of country level domains: .co.uk. .de etc. and folders on a .org domain i.e. domain.org/italia. It kind of depends on the size of the operation and budget available.
Most advice I found was don't do it.domain.org.

IP Address of Server an SEO Factor??
Hello all, Interested to hear your thoughts on this. What's best practice re server IP location. Is it OK for that to be in the US if your company is in Europe? Any potential issues? John Mueller says server location is irrelevant, but some developer I work with thinks IP address of the server is a factor. I can't see how it would be in this day and age. https://www.seroundtable.com/seo-geo-location-server-google-17468.html Many thanks, Gill.

Mobile SEO
Hi there, My website when searching via mobile is now showing the mobile version of the site in SERPs, well for quite sometime now to be honest, anyway the ranking in mobile are no different to what they are on desktop, is there actually anything I can do to influence my mobile SERPs? 9 times out of 10 it's desktop websites that are ranking about me in mobile search. Any help would be appreciated.

What are the SEO implications of a CNAME?
(please ignore ridiculousness of hypothetical situation) Lets say Amazon had a food division which was at food.amazon.com. I partnered with Amazon's food division and now food.amazon.com will point to my website (food.com). Amazon adds a CNAME record so food.amazon.com resolves to food.com. If food.amazon.com has built up significant page rank / domain authority, will food.com be getting those benefits? Also, lets say food.amazon.com/rice has a lot of PR / authority -- will food.com benefit from the value of those internal pages?

Use of Apache mod_rewrite module for SEO?
I'm curious if anyone here running a large, complex, dynamic site has used the Apache server mod_rewrite module to simplify their site's URLs by rewriting them in a standard format. The chief use of this module for SEO purposes would be to aid in canonicalization and reduce duplicate content. For example, you could easily convert all of you ALL CAPS or MixedCase URLs to lower case, change all "/index.html" URLs to just point to "/", change all word seperators to hyphens, and so on. Any server-side ninjas out there with stories to tell? 🙂
