Question on Moving Content
-
I just moved my site from a Wordpress hosted site to Squarespace. We have the same domain, however, the content is now located on a different URL (again, same base domain).
I'm unable to easily set up 301 redirects for the old content to be mapped to the new content so I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations for a workaround. Basically, I want to make sure google knows that Product A's page is now located at this new URL. (www.domain.com/11245 > www.domain.com/product-a).
Maybe it's something that I don't have to worry about anymore because the old content is gone? I mean, I have a global redirect set up that no matter what you enter after the base domain, it now goes to the homepage but I just want to make sure I'm not missing something here.
Really appreciate your help!

Hey There
I've not used Squarespace but this looks like your answer here: http://help.squarespace.com/guides/how-do-i-create-url-shortcuts-or-mappings
I think they are calling them "shortcuts" or "mappings" and not "redirects" but looks like it achieves what you need. As others have said the global catch all isn't very ideal, you should definitely individually redirect old pages.
Hope that helps!

HI,
If I understand correctly, you have your old site on Wordpress and now you switch over to another CMS (Squarespace). You can set up your redirect in Wordpress. You can download a redirect plugin to do so or if you are already using a SEO plugin on Wordpress, they should offer 301 redirects.
The global redirect will help redirect all the traffic from the old site to the new site which is good. However, that is not the best practice when visitors want to visit Content A on the old site and then it redirects to your new site's HP. They would simply leave the site because they are not seeing what they were looking for. It would be best to redirect www.olddomain.com/content-a >>> www.newdomain.com/content-a

When you are porting a website, there are several key considerations.
Do you have access to Google Analytics? Google Webmaster Tools? Historical data?
Besides Google SERPs, your traffic may be coming from many different sources. How many are REFERRED from other sites, via external links? How many are DIRECT traffic from old visitors who saved the URL as a favorite, or e-mailed the old URL to a friend?
That is why you need to know your top landing pages, and make sure to handle redirecting old URLs to new URLs.
-
Since you are changing the URLs, is there any way to redirect each of you OLD URLs to their corresponding new URL? Unless you can do that, your porting will be one step forward, two steps back. Until Google ranks all your new pages (URLs) it will be hit-or-miss. Google may take days, weeks, or months to rank and settle your new URLs into the SERPs.

Thanks for the response! Unfortunately, the integrated Squarespace solution that you mention doesn't work for me because the content was hosted on another site according to their customer service. Not sure if this may make you suggest anything out of the box? Thanks again for your help. It's appreciated!

Just about every CMS out there has a way to set up 301 redirects from your old content to the new URLs. I did a quick Google search for "squarespace 301 redirect" and found several sites with tutorials on how to do that. I believe it's related to shortcuts, although I haven't used Squarespace before.
I would try your best to redirect as much of the old content to the new content. You might even take a look at your site's backlinks and see if there are any links to internal pages on your site (rather than to your home page). Those links are the ones you're going to want to redirect.
I would also take a look at Google Webmaster Tools and see the errors there. They'll point out the most important ones to get corrected, and I would go ahead and set up redirects for those pages that are listed.
A redirect for all the content, including what you're calling a "global redirect" is okay, but it's more like a last resort than what I recommend. If you can redirect an old URL to the new location that is preferred.

Complicated Duplicate Content Question...but it's fun, so please help.
Quick background: I have a page that is absolutely terrible, but it has links and it's a category page so it ranks. I have a landing page which is significantly - a bizillion times - better, but it is omitted in the search results for the most important query we need. I'm considering switching the content of the two pages, but I have no idea what they will do. I'm not sure if it will cause duplicate content issues or what will happen. Here are the two urls: Terrible page that ranks (not well but it's what comes up eventually) https://kemprugegreen.com/personal-injury/ Far better page that keeps getting omitted: https://kemprugegreen.com/location/tampa/tampa-personal-injury-attorney/ Any suggestions (other than just wait on google to stop omitting the page, because that's just not going to happen) would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Ruben

Migration Challenge Question
I work for a company that recently acquired another company and we are in the process of merging the brands. Right now we have two website, lets call them: www.parentcompanyalpha.com www.acquiredcompanyalpha.com We are working with a web development company who is designing our brand new site, which will launch at the end of September, we can call that www.parentacquired.com. Normally it would be simple enough to just 301 redirect all content from www.parentcompanyalpha.com and www.acquiredcompanyalpha.com to the mapped migrated content on www.parentacquired.com. But that would be too simple. The reality is that only 30% of www.acquiredcompanyalpha.com will be migrating over, as part of that acquired business is remaining independent of the merged brands, and might be sold off. So someone over there mirrored the www.acquiredcompanyalpha.com site and created an exact duplicate of www.acquiredcompanybravo.com. So now we have duplicate content for that site out there (I was unaware they were doing this now, we thought they were waiting until our new site was launched). Eventually we will want some of the content from acquiredcompanyalpha.com to redirect to acquiredcompanybravo.com and the remainder to parentacquired.com. What is the best interim solution to maintain as much of the domain values as possible? The new site won't launch until end of September, and it could fall into October. I have two sites that are mirrors of each other, one with a domain value of 67 and the new one a lowly 17. I am concerned about the duplicate site dragging down that 67 score. I can ask them to use rel=canonical tags temporarily if both sites are going to remain until Sept/Oct timeframe, but which way should they go? I am inclined to think the best result would be to have acquiredcompanybravo.com rel=canonical back to acquiredcompanyalpha.com for now, and when the new site launches, remove those and redirect as appropriate. But will that have long term negative impact on acquiredcomapnybravo.com? Sorry, if this is convoluted, it is a little crazy with people in different companies doing different things that are not coordinated.

Technical Site Questions
When i do a google cache of our site, i see 2 menus, our developers say that's because the 2nd is for the mobile menu - is that correct, as when i look up other sites that have mobile rendering they only have one menu visible. Plus GWT's has the number of internal links per page at least x2 what they should have - are they connected? Secondly when i do a spider test through http://tools.seobook.com/general/spider-test/ it shows all "behind the scenes text" eg font names, portals, sliders, margins - "font size px" is shown as 17 times and a density of 2.15% - surely this isnt correct as google will be thinking that these are my keywords !? My site is www.over50choices.co.uk Thanks Ash

Duplicate Content Question
Currently, we manage a site that generates content from a database based on user search criteria such as location or type of business. ..Although we currently rank well -- we created the website based on providing value to the visitor with options for viewing the content - we are concerned about duplicate content issues and if they would apply. For example, the listing that is pulled up for the user upon one search could have the same content as another search but in a different order. Similar to hotels who offer room booking by room type or by rate. Would this dynamically generated content count as duplicate content? The site has done well, but don't want to risk a any future Google penalties caused by duplicate content. Thanks for your help!

Site Structure Question
Hi All, Got a question about site structure, I currently have a website where everything is hosted on the root of the domain. See example below: site.com/men site.com/men-shorts site.com/men-shorts-[product name] I want to change the structure to site.com/men/shorts/[product-name] I have asked a couple of SEOs and some agree with me that the structure needs to be changed and some say that as long as I dictate the structure with internal links and breadcrumbs the URL structure doesn't matter... What do you guys think? Many thanks, Carlos

Page Titles... question about which is better
Hi, I'm kind of a newbie and I'm working on an e commerce website. I would love to be able to optimize the site so that the keyword "dog boutique" was ranking for the homepage. B/C a lot of the pages call from php to create the meta data, most of generated page titles look like "Product Name, Category - Moondoggie Dog Boutique" My question is would it be more helpful to just have Moondoggie Dog Boutique on the page title on the page I would like to rank for "dog boutique" and use Moondoggie Inc. or Just Moondoggie in it's place on all of the other pages? Would this help or make it worse? Thanks! KristyO If you would like to see hte site: http://www.moondoggieinc.com

Duplicate content
Is there manual intervention required for a site that has been flagged for duplicate content to get back to its original rankings, once the duplicated content has been removed? Background: Our site recently experienced a significant drop in traffic around the time that a chunk of content from other sites (ie. duplicate) went live. While it was not an exact replica of the pages on other sites, there was quite a bit of overlap. That content has since been removed, but our traffic hasn't improved. What else can we do to improve our ranking?

Duplicate Content Through Sorting
I have a website that sells images. When you search you're given a page like this: http://www.andertoons.com/search-cartoons/santa/ I also give users the option to resort results by date, views and rating like this: http://www.andertoons.com/search-cartoons/santa/byrating/ I've seen in SEOmoz that Google might see these as duplicate content, but it's a feature I think is useful. How should I address this?
