Switching forum software - 301 redirects?
-
Hi everyone
I'm working on a successful Wordpress site that also has a forum attached. The forum currently uses YAF forum software, which requires Windows hosting.
The site owner wants to switch to Linux hosting. This is not a problem for WP, but it does mean that we'll need to transfer the forum to Xenforo or something similar that runs on Linux. We're OK with the technical side of this, but we're worried about the SEO implications.
The URL for every forum post (more than 50,000 of them) is going to change during this transfer. It seems completely impractical to 301 each of those, so should I just 301 the URLs that have inbound links? Also, what is google's algo going to think when we suddenly have ~50,000 404s?
Many thanks in advance!

Run your site through SEM Rush. It's generally pretty accurate if you need a better understanding of what pages draw traffic and for which queries. After that, it's a good idea to use your analytics tools to identify pages that draw traffic.
One really good link may be driving a ton of traffic to a specific page, but it may not necessarily rank very well. The site might lose a significant amount of referrals due to that link. So make sure to check where your referral sources go as well.
When all of that is said and done, it's time to look at links. Use a few different sources such as Webmaster Tools (Google and Bing), Majestic SEO, Ahrefs and OSE. Majestic and Ahrefs are the favorites, as far as percentage of links and freshness.
When you have the Keep and Cull list, make sure to redirect the keepers to relevant pages. If the page was about donuts, send it to the new donuts page. Don't send it to the bagels page. Google dislikes that. Blanket redirects are generally sub-optimal.
As for the culled pages, you might try to offer a useful 404 page. Something that helps them find something similar to the topic of the page that went away. When all of the dust clears, 410 the culled pages. Alternately, you can skip straight to a 410 if you're only worried about bots wasting crawl budget on a bunch of 404 results.

Hi Jennifer
Thanks for your thoughts. As I said this is a 50,000 post forum so I definitely won't be adding 301s for all of them.
I think this is what we'll do:
- Use OSE and the google 'site:' operator to identify the most valuable posts in the forum and 301 redirect them to the the new URL for that post
- set up a general 301 redirect to redirect all other URLs to the forum homepage '/forum/'
If anyone has any other thoughts, I'd love to hear them!

I would definitely avoid leaving a bunch of URLs as 404s. Even though it would be time consuming I would really try to 301 redirect all of the old pages to the most relevant current page. That would definitely be the best long term move. If you really can't do that you can 301 redirect all of the old forum pages to the new forum. Instead of redirecting to the most relevant post you can put them to the beginning directory of the new forum so at least they aren't receiving a 404 and can hopefully search for their issue there. If you do leave thousands of URLs with 404 errors I would continuously check Google and Bing Webmaster Tools for crawl errors. The webmaster tools will identify URLs they have crawled and found issues with and at that time I would just start fixing them one by one and redirecting to the most relevant URL. That way, over time, the URLs will eventually be corrected. Hope this helps.

Removing Multiple 301 Redirects
During my last redesign (and migration to Drupal) some of the updated SEO friendly url's on the new site were misspelled. Rather than updating the 301 redirects to point to the correct page the developer just added an additional 301 redirect. So it was redirected like this website.com/oldpage (301 to) website.com/new-paige (301 to) website.com/new-page Instead of website.com/oldpage (301 to) website.com/new-page I'll be finishing another redesign and updating to https soon, should I remove the redirect to the misspelled domain and just have one 301 from the original page? These multiple redirects have been up for over a year. Thanks for any specific advice!

Static site to wordpress - avoiding 301 redirects
Moving our static website to wordpress, pages currently end in the .htm extension and for reasons of me having to do all the moving myself and wanting to preserve link equity is there any way I can run the pages with a .htm extension in Wordpress? Tried using a plug-in by Daddy Design but it seems a bit hit and miss at times. I basically need to keep the url's the same as I will not be able to get the vast majority of my links altered to the new pages, plus I am doing this by myself!

Site blocked by robots.txt and 301 redirected still in SERPs
I have a vanity URL domain that 301 redirects to my main site. That domain does have a robots.txt to disallow the entire site as well. However, for a branded enough search that vanity domain still shows up in SERPs and has the new Google message of: A description for this result is not available because of this site's robots.txt I get why the message is there - that's not my , my question is shouldn't a 301 redirect trump this domain showing in SERPs, ever? Client isn't happy about it showing at all. How can I get the vanity domain out of the SERPs? THANKS in advance!

301 Redirect without specifying base domain?
Hi guys, about 10 minutes ago, I finally found the underlying problem in magento between 301 redirects and canonical tags - part of the reason why it was hard to identify was because the problem is not constant through all pages. Anyway now that I found the problem, I have about 50 301 redirects to implement via .htaccess. Now I know the regular syntax is Redirect 301 /oldpage.html http://www.yoursite.com/newpage.html But I'm wondering if there's a way that the base domain doesn't have to be specified in the second half of this line. Something like: Redirect 301 /oldpage.html /newpage.html I'm sure this can be done, somehow. Thanks!

/forum/ or /hookah-forum/
I'm building a new website on Hookah.org. It will have a forum and blog. Should I put them in Hookah.org/hookah-forum/ and Hookah.com/hookah-blog/ or Hookah.org/forum and Hookah.org/blog I think /forum/ and /blog/ are easier for users but am not sure how much adding the word hookah helps with SEO.

Help needed please with 301 redirects in htaccess file.
In summary, we're currently having issues with our htaccess file. 301 redirects are going through to the new described URL but in addition the new URL is followed by a ? and the old URL. How can we get rid of the ? and previous URL so they don't appear as an ending. None of the examples we've found re this issue online appear to work. Can anyone please offer some advice? Can we use a RewriteRule to stop this happening? Here's a summary of the htaccess file REDIRECT CODE BEGINS HERE LONG LIST OF REDIRECTS, which appear to be set up perfectly fine. How to show a 'We are now...' message for a rebrand and do a 301 redirect?
Our developer wants to use javascript, document referral or adding a URL parameter, in order to show a modal window telling them 'We are now...'. A cookie seems to be too much work. All of which don't play nice with the search engines. Do you know of a technique or method that allows us to be SEO friendly and still give a good user experience? Thanks.
