Using robots.txt to deal with duplicate content
-
I have 2 sites with duplicate content issues.
One is a wordpress blog.
The other is a store (Pinnacle Cart).
I cannot edit the canonical tag on either site. In this case, should I use robots.txt to eliminate the duplicate content?

It will be any part of the URL that doesn't handle navigation, so look at what you can delete off the URL without breaking the link to the product page.
Take a look at this: http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/2009/10/new-parameter-handling-tool-helps-with.html
Remember, this will only work with Google!
This is another interesting video from Matt Cutts about removing content from Google: http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/2008/01/remove-your-content-from-google.html

If the urls look like this...
Would I tell Google to ignore p, mode, parent, or CatalogSetSortBy? Just one of those or all of those?
Thanks!!!

For Wordpress try : http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/canonical/
also look at Yoast's Wordpress SEO plugin referenced on that page - I love it!
and for the duplicate content caused by the dymanic content on the pinnacle cart you can use the Google Webmasters tool to tell the Google to ignore certain parameters - go to Site configuration - Settings - Parameter handling and add the variables you wish to ignore to this list.

Hi,
The two sites are unrelated to each other so my concern is not duplicate content between the two, there is none.
However, on each of the sites I have the duplicate content issues. I do have admin privileges to both sites.
If there is a Wordpress plug in that would be great. Do you have one that you would recommend?
For my ecommerce site using pinnacle cart, I have duplicates because of the way people can search on the site. For example:
|
http://www.domain.com/accessories/
http://www.domain.com/accessories/?p=catalog&mode=catalog&parent=17&pg=1&CatalogSetSortBy=date
http://www.domain.com/accessories/?p=catalog&mode=catalog&parent=17&pg=1&CatalogSetSortBy=name
http://www.domain.com/accessories/?p=catalog&mode=catalog&parent=17&pg=1&CatalogSetSortBy=price
|
These all show as duplicate content in my webmaster tools reports. I don't have the ability to edit each head tag of pages in order to add a canonical link on this site.

What are your intentions here? Do you intend to leave both sites running? Can you give us more information on the sites? Are they aged domains, is one/any/both of them currently attracting any inbound links, are they ranking? What is the purpose of the duplicate content?
Are you looking to redirect traffic from one of the sites to the other using 301 redirect?
Or do you want both sites visible - using the Canonical link tag?
(I am concerned that you say you 'cannot edit the tag'? Do you not have full Admin access to either site?
There are dedicated Canonical management plugins for Wordpress (if you have access to the wp-admin area)
You are going to need some admin priviledges to make any alterations to the site so that you can correct this.
Let us know a bit more please!

Database driven content producing false duplicate content errors
How do I stop the Moz crawler from creating false duplicate content errors. I have yet to submit my website to google crawler because I am waiting to fix all my site optimization issues. Example: contactus.aspx?propid=200, contactus.aspx?propid=201.... these are the same pages but with some old url parameters stuck on them. How do I get Moz and Google not to consider these duplicates. I have looked at http://moz.com/learn/seo/duplicate-content with respect to Rel="canonical" and I think I am just confused. Nick

Duplicate content vs. less content
Hi, I run a site that is currently doing very well in google for the terms that we want. We are 1,2 or 3 for our 4 targeted terms, but havent been able to jump to number one in two categories that I would really like to. In looking at our site, I didn't realize we have a TON of duplicate content as seen by SEO moz and I guess google. It appears to be coming from our forum, we use drupal. RIght now we have over 4500 pages of duplicate content. Here is my question: How much is this hurting us as we are ranking high. Is it better to kill the forum (which is more community service than business) and have a very tight site SEO-wise, or leave the forum even with the duplicate content. Thanks for your help. Erik

Content and url duplication?
One of the campaign tools flags one of my clients sites as having lots of duplicates. This is true in the sense the content is sort of boiler plate but with the different countries wording changed. The is same with the urls but they are different in the sense a couple of words have changed in the url`s. So its not the case of a cms or server issue as this seomoz advises. It doesnt need 301`s! Thing is in the niche, freight, transport operators, shipping, I can see many other sites doing the same thing and those sites have lots of similar pages ranking very well. In fact one site has over 300 keywords ranked on page 1-2, but it is a large site with an 12yo domain, which clearly helps. Of course having every page content unique is important, however, i suppose it is better than copy n paste from other sites. So its unique in that sense. Im hoping to convince the site owner to change the content over time for every country. A long process. My biggest problem for understanding duplication issues is that every tabloid or broadsheet media website would be canned from google as quite often they scrape Reuters or re-publish standard press releases on their sites as newsworthy content. So i have great doubt that there is a penalty for it. You only have to look and you can see media sites duplication everywhere, everyday, but they get ranked. I just think that google dont rank the worst cases of spammy duplication. They still index though I notice. So considering the business niche has very much the same content layout replicated content, which rank well, is this duplicate flag such a great worry? Many businesses sell the same service to many locations and its virtually impossible to re write the services in a dozen or so different ways.

Duplicate content connundrum
Hey Mozzers- I have a tricky situation with one of my clients. They're a reputable organization and have been mentioned in several major news articles. They want to create a Press page on their site with links to each article, but they want viewers to remain within the site and not be redirected to the press sites themselves. The other issue is some of the articles have been removed from the original press sites where they were first posted. I want to avoid duplicate content issues, but I don't see how to repost the articles within the client's site. I figure I have 3 options: 1. create PDFs (w/SEO-friendly URLs) with the articles embedded in them that open in a new window. 2. Post an image with screenshot of article on a unique URL w/brief content. 3. Copy and paste the article to a unique URL. If anyone has experience with this issue or any suggestions, I would greatly appreciate it. Jaime Brown

Duplicate content
I have to sentences that I want to optimize to different pages for. sentence number one is travel to ibiza by boat sentence number to is travel to ibiza by ferry My question is, can I have the same content on both pages exept for the keywords or will Google treat that as duplicate content and punish me? And If yes, where goes the limit/border for duplicate content?
