Duplicate Content based on www.www
-
In trying to knock down the most common errors on our site, we've noticed we do have an issue with dupicate content; however, most of the duplicate content errors are due to our site being indexed with www.www and not just www.
I am perplexed as to how this is happening. Searching through IIS, I see nothing that would be causing this, and we have no hostname records setup that are www.www.
Does anyone know of any other things that may cause this and how we can go about remedying it?

Just a thanks again! I modded ISAPI Rewrite and resolved the problem thanks to your tip.
FYI in case anyone else needs it, here is the mod I did:
#redirecting www.www.domain.com to www.domain.com also redirect the net and org #RewriteCond Host: www.www.domainname.(com|net|org)
#RewriteRule (.*) http://domainname.com$2 [R] -
Thanks Keri - yes I have ISAPI Rewrite installed.
I will go that route and give it a shot.

I haven't done this in a long time, but I used ISAPI Rewrite, and did what is talked about in this thread at http://www.webmasterworld.com/microsoft_asp_net/3951672.htm. An alternate method is discussed at http://www.stepforth.com/resources/web-marketing-knowledgebase/non-www-redirect/#microsoft. Hope this helps you get started!

Hi Keri - it is IIS6
-
Are you running IIS6 or IIS7? Things are a little different for each of them. If you let us know what version of IIS you're running, we'll look up the proper configuration for you.

Hi Sanket,
The person asking the question is on IIS, so an .htaccess file won't help.
-
Thanks Sanket, your reply makes total sense and I would apply it if I could figure out how the extra www ( www.www ) is even happening. Wouldn't I have to know that first in order to implement the redirect?
In IIS I don't see where the extra www.www is setup (what directory)
If I could find it, it seems I could just create a .htaccess file with the code below:
Options +FollowSymlinks
RewriteEngine on
rewritecond %{http_host} ^www.www.domain.com [nc]
rewriterule ^(.*)$ http://www.domain.com/$1 [r=301,nc]Would that could be right?
I'm still digging on where the extra forward to www.www is happening.

Hi
If your sit is opened with or without WWW then obviously Google consider both different site and duplicate content. This will solve by setting rel="canonical" . 301 redirect is best option because it will transfer your back-links, page-rank and linkjuce so it is safe way of redirect URL. Upload .htaccess. file in your FTP server it helps you to solve this problem.

Intentional Duplicate Content - Great UX, Bad for Ranking?
I'll try to keep this as clear and high level as possible. Thank you in advance for any and all help! We're managing a healthcare practice which specializes in neurosurgical treatments. As the practice is rather large, the doctors have several "specialties" in which they focus in, i.e. back surgery, facial surgery, brain surgery, etc. They have a main website (examplepractice.com) which holds ALL of their content on each condition and treatment in which they deal with. So, if someone enters their main homepage they will see conditions and treatments for all the specialties categorized together. However, linked within the main site are "mini-sites" for each specialty (same domain, same site) (examplepractice.com/brain-surgery), but with a different navigation menu to give the illusion of "separate website". These mini-sites are then tailored from a creative, content and UX perspective to THAT specific group of treatments and conditions. Now, anyone who enters this minisite will find information pertaining to only that specialty. The mini-sites are NOT set up as folders, but rather just a system of URLs that we have mapped out to each page. We set up the pages this way to maintain an exclusive feel for the site. Instead of someone drilling into a specific condition and having the menu change, we created the copies. But, because of how this is set up, we now have duplicate content for each treatment and condition child page (one on the main site, one on the minisite). My question (finally) is will this cause a problem in the future? Are we essentially splitting the "juice" between these two pages? Are we making it easier for our competitors to outrank us? We know this layout makes sense from the perspective of a user, but we're unclear how to move forward from a search perspective. Any tips?

WordPress Duplicate Content Caused By Categories
Hello, We have a wordpress blog that has around 250 categories. Due to our platform we have a hierarchy structure for 3 separate stores. For example iPhone > Apps > Books. Placing a blog post in the books category automatically places it into iPhone and iPhone/Apps category, causing 3 instances of any blog post in this category. Is this an issue? I have seen 2 schools of thought on categories, 1 index follow and 2 noindex follow. I know some of our categories get indexed, but with so many, maybe it is better to noindex them. We also considered reducing our categories to 10 to 12 and use tags to provide the indexed site navigation as follows: Reviews (category) iPhone Book App, iPhone App Store (tags) but this seems a little redundant? Anyone want to take this on? thank you Mike

Wordpress tags and duplicate content?
I've seen a few other Q&A posts on this but I haven't found a complete answer. I read somewhere a while ago that you can use as many tags as you would like. I found that I rank for each tag I used. For example, I could rank for best night clubs in san antonio, good best night clubs in san antonio, great best night clubs in san antonio, top best night clubs in san antonio, etc. However, I now see that I'm creating a ton of duplicate content. Is there any way to set a canonical tag on the tag pages to link back to the original post so that I still keep my rankings? Would future tags be ignored if I did this?

My site is built through squarespace and when I ran the campaign in SEOmoz...its come up with all these errors saying duplicate content and duplicate page title for my blog portion. I've heard that canonical tags help with this but with squarespace its hard to add code to page level...only site wide is possible.
