Competitor link profile shocking - yet still out ranking!

Howdy fellow Mozzer's,
I have been doing some background seo checking on a competitor in my small "insurance niche" to try and see why they have recently shot up the listings and are now consistently out ranking us.
We have quality content on our site and have always taken an approach of trying to be whiter than white when it comes to developing out SEO plans.The site in question has recently moved ahead of us (along with some aggregators e.g. confused.com) possibly due to shifting patterns from possible algorithm changes favouring brand or could it be a case that Google has dropped a ball when it comes to checking back links as the competitors site is 99% linked to link farms, link submission sites, directories and lots of other spammy/poor quality sites.
We do not feel they are doing anything from a content stand to justify their sudden propulsion up the ranks. I am reluctant to pursue dodgy tactics to help get out site back in position as I feel it could then contribute and hurt us down the line.
Does anyone know how I can combat against their poor QUANTITY over QUALITY banklink profile that is surely helping them at the minute?
At a bit of a loss so any help would be greatly appreciated.

There has been a sudden leap from a couple of sites employing the same tactic. In fact one site I checked also had a very similar backlink profile (possible a sister brand to the one I mentioned in my first post above) and they too have climbed in recent weeks. I will look forward to any further insight you can provide on the matter

Very true, I had not considered they may have started to disavow some of the really poor links allowing the quality links to once again shine through...
Edit* : If it is not a case of utilising the Disavow tool, I do hope that any impending Google Algorithm update (which may have been in testing of late) comes along and bite them in the proverbial bottom.

I'll add a few of my thoughts as well. I've seen sites that soar ahead on the power of unnatural links and then when Penguin hits they die out and just start fresh again with a new spammy site. Google has gotten better at just not counting many types of unnatural links but there are several types that will still work...for now.
Also, you don't know which of their links they have disavowed. Perhaps they have links from thousands of domains that are really spammy but they've disavowed them and in the midst of those spammy links could be some really good ones.

I have seen similar tactics in the local SEO industry lately, so I share your confusion.
Looking at MOZ's tools, we see that our main competitor has a huge amount of spammy links pointing back to their site. Our backlink profile has been very stringent, only submitting to or accepting higher quality sources. They still out rank us, even tho their content quality score is much lower. I am looking into this now, and will provide an answer or opinion soon.

Many times when people say , my competitor has a spammy link profile, it turns out that among all the worthless links are a few really good ones.

If it's any consolation, given that you're in the insurance niche, it is one that Google wants to keep a close eye on and keep clean - so chances are action would be quicker than if you were in the dog accessories industry, let's say!

Have to agree, I want to keep it on the straight and narrow, helping to maintain a site that should be seen as white to the core.
I do hope that the algorithm will be further cleaned up and that we will soon see our site moving back ahead of those employing dodgy tactics for short term gain.

I didn't check to see if they are paid links as yet - but will go have another look for sure.Andy, I totally agree, despite being as clean as we can be, we do know that many of our competitors can be a little shady when it comes to SEO and we also understand that we cannot really challenge the super huge aggregators for authority, however consider ourselves to one of the best of the rest.
We do try and create great linkable assets, but mainly for peripheral elements associated with us e.g. charity news, product reviews etc I am trying to get more genuine insurance articles on our blog etc - infographics, case studies etc... but finding people that think our content is valuable to both them and their readers is the hardest bit. I think people have certainly become a little numb to direct contact and so the content really has to shine and stand out from the crowd.

We have to remember that, for all of Google's progress, it is still an algorithm that relies heavily on links and its internal PageRank.
If your site has links from places with a strong PageRank, that is almost "reason enough" for the algorithm to rank your site (in the very most basic terms).
Of course, the greatest advancement Google has made in recent times is teaching its algorithms (and manual quality assessors) to detect manipulative link building. They're getting faster and better at detecting them. Rest assured, that site will inevitably be penalised.
In terms of what you can do, look at it objectively: Would you want to beat them at their own game and do this, but have no guarantee that it would work for you and an almost iron guarantee that it will inevitably penalise you? It doesn't make sense to me - so I would keep doing what you're doing and look to earn more links in the way that you have. You might improve things now, but down the line your site is going to be in altogether much better place.
Keep at it mate - it's frustrating I know, but it'll turn around.

The reporting tool puts them on Google's radar and if they have been doing this then they won't last for long.

There are 3 industries I wont work in. Insurance, finance and automotive, purely because of the amount of dirty tactics that go on. I have found that a lot will undertake tiered link building, networks and other unsavoury tactics in place of being white hat, because they feel they have no option.
In terms of making sure you have something that people really want to link to, you need to create some link-assets. These can be anything that will make people want to link back and can be a study, white-paper, research, tool, informative post or something heavily news-worthy. You then need to look to doing some outreach and contacting sites, journalists, industry bodies, etc, and informing them of what you have to offer (link assets).
Look to the sites you want links from, and then decide the route that is likely to gain you positive attention and links.

High Rank and Traffic of low DA and Backlinks
Hi guys, is a pleasure being a part of this community, hope in learning a lot with you guys, i just started a year learning about SEO and it been a big journey. I was looking at some competition of some websites that i been optmizing, and i found a website that called my attention and i cant figure out whats going on, it haves huge traffic but in terms of technicall SEO is really week, and not just this but also in terms of DA and backlinks (most of them spammy - 20 backlinks), the domain in question is bhnews.com.br I notice that doesnt have any social media, not analytics, etc. The only thing that i notice is that there is a website or a company called "BH news" (televesion), but its not related with it, since the type of information that bhnews.com.br presents is "lottery" results. So this kind of situation confuses me a lot, because is a lot of hard work in optmizing a website to rank in google, and than i come a across with this type of website with 20 backlinks (most of anchor or name of domain), and than haves like 2M visits per month and ranks for keywords related with the this type of sites of lottery. Can someone tell me if there is some kind of black seo, or something that is making this rank so high? regards

Inbound Links - Redirect, Leave Alone, etc
Hi, I recently download the inbound links report for my client to look for some opportunities. When they switched to our platform a couple years ago, the format of some of their webpages change, so a number of these inbound links are going to an error page and should be redirected. However, some of these are spammy. In that case, someone recommended to me to disavow them but still redirect anyway. In other cases, some were "last seen" a year or two ago, so when I try to go to the URL the link is coming from, I also get an error page. Should I bother to redirect in these cases? Should I disavow in both cases? Or leave them alone? Thanks for any input!

Competitor Inverse Relationship
Please take a look at the attached images which show the apparently inverse relationship between one of our top competitors (purple trace) and us (blue trace). There seems to be a fairly clear correlation, we're just left wondering what could have happened to cause this. It seems clear that the 'purple' team was termporarily able to beat us out on the keywords we were working on, but a few questions arise: Did the purple team beat us out, or did we screw something up? If they beat us out, what on earth did they do because it clearly wasn't content creation (they have a skimpy site with no blog and their Alexa score is almost identical to ours We took some steps to fix our situation including: Page optimization website speed improvement Blog review and update You can see from the second graph (rankings) that our keyword rankings slid starting may/2018 along with our traffic, but we regained our footing a year later (now). I guess the big questions are: were there black hat tactics at play here? If so, what were they likely to be? did the problem go away because the purple team stopped paying someone for these results? Was it our fault but we fixed it? what is the most likely reason for this problem? Could it have been a Google algorithm update? Which one? What is really a bad link in 2017?
Hi, Routine answer is: A link which doesn't provides any value. Tired of listening to this statement where we can see number of back-links been generated with different scenarios. There are still many low DA websites which speaks exactly about a brand and link a brand naturally. So, is this a bad link or good link? Let's be honest here. No one gonna visit such pages and browse through our website; it's all about what it's been doing in-terms of SEO. Do these websites to be in disavow list? Beside the context how a brand been mentioned, what are the other metrics to disavow a domain? Expecting some real answers for this straight question. If it's a low DA site and speaking about exactly our website- Good or bad? Vice-versa...high DA website mentioned website with less matching content. What is the proportion of website authority and content context? Can we keep a medium DA backlinks with some Moz spam score?

How to deal with link echoes of former hacked websites?
Hi all, I'd know which is the best way to deal with link echoes of former hacked websites that Webmaster tool reports. to clarify: when you download the backlink report from Webmaster tool you'll have a list of backlinks discovered, but if you follow one of those links you will see that on that page there is no link to your website. the source code is also clean, no hidden links or other dodgy technique. Since that the topic is usually miles away from my industry I have to assume at some point that site has been hacked by a spammer who placed that backlink. In this case what should I do? Ignore it, disavow the domain or what? Moreover, which is the best procedure when you have to face a site which points a lot of backlinks from only its sub-domains? For example: this dodgy spammy website : http://px949z32.com/ is apparently a desert, but when you do site:http://px949z32.com/ you'll discover 55,200 results! Would be it be enough to just disavow the root domain http://px949z32.com/?

As I don't want to wait too long before taking any action, my plan is to disavow all those domains without any mercy, although I can't find a current backlink in one of their pages. I will do this, as at the minute my concern is they will be hacked again and I have to face the same issue again and again Thanks to all, P.0 -
Is one of my competitors trying to get my site penalized?
Hi guys, I have been ranking #2 for a popular search term for several months now, and today I noticed a drop to #5, so I went to check my backlink profile, and I'm seeing thousands of no-follow exact keyword matched backlinks, all from spammy looking websites. I looked at some of the links and they do link to me, but I didn't generate these links, and I have never paid anybody externally to build links for me. What is the best course of action for me here? link disavow tool?

Reviewing a competitors links
Using Open Site Explorer I was reviewing a sites links. This site happens to appear at position 2 in Google for a key-term that I am targeting for one of my sites. Most, if not all of the links appear to be coming from some very questionable sources that have absolutely nothing to do with their sites content or business. Some of the page titles are : Free Music - Free Music Tampa Bay Florida Fishing Guide Free BDSM and Bondage Sex, BDSM XXX, Fetish Por... LAX Car Rental Reciprical Links Page - Add Your Link Casino More Links Is this practice going to end up hurting their site and catch up to them at some point? From what I have read, these are not the type of links that you want to be going after.
