Not ranking in Google - why???
-
This will be a bit long, so please bare with me.
I have a client in the auto parts industry who wants to rank their homepage for 13 different keywords. We are ranked first page for all keywords in Yahoo! Mexico and Bing Mexico, but not ranking first page at all in Google Mexico.
My client's competitor, however, is clearly outranking my client in Google. When comparing both pages, my client's, while not 100% optimized, looks better optimized than their competitor's. Looking at all metrics using Moz, SEMRush, ahrefs, etc... my client's site looks MUCH better on all fronts.
I know ranking a single homepage for more than 10 keywords is a difficult task. Our competitor is however, ranking for them, so it's not impossible. The keywords are not even that competitive according to Moz's analysis. I decided to create an optimized page for each keyword to try to rank these pages, but still my client wants the homepage to rank (again, if the competitor is ranking, then it's possible to do this) and I am afraid these pages I created could result in keyword cannibalization ultimately affecting the homepage's possibility to rank.
My client had a previous SEO agency working for them and basically all they did was create fake blogs and have lots of keyword rich links directed to the site's homepage. I got the complete link profile from several tools and submitted a disavow requests for as many fishy links I could find, but that hasn't shown any results so far. Note: when looking at the competitor link profile, they have basically just a few links and no external links of real value whatsoever.
My client is obviously very frustrated, and so am I. In my SEO experience, it shouldn't be such a difficult task to accomplish, however nothing seems to work even though everything seems to point that my client should rank higher. So now I'm running out of ideas regarding what to do with this site.
Any insight you could provide would be SO helpful to me and my client. If needed I can provide my client's homepage URL and also their competitors homepage for you to review. i can also give you any extra information you need.
Thanks a lot!

Thank you both! Now when is the damn Penguin update coming?!?! hahaha I wish we could have an answer.
-
Yep - cheers! Thanks.

Just seeing this now and wanted to clarify that Jane was talking about a Panda update rather than Penguin. I know you knew that Jane. We're still waiting for that Penguin refresh!
-
Hi Eduardo,
If you're suffering from a Penguin issue, you may see the site's results improve over the next few days or weeks. Google confirmed last night that they are rolling out Penguin 4.0, starting yesterday. Most people have seen more movement in US results so far, but there have certainly been some international changes, and it's no longer 2011 when non-US results took a very long time to update after Google first released Panda.
If nothing changes for the site in the next few weeks, either Penguin is not the issue or you have not done enough to remove the bad links. Have you tried removing them, not just submitting a disavow report? Removal is recommended; if removal turns out to be impossible, that's when you need to use the disavow tool.
The site's issues could stem from on-site, meaning that you'll need to look through the ideas presented here and conduct a full on-site audit.

Just optimize your pages to focus on INTENT now, rather than specific keywords, thus reducing the chance of keyword cannibalization. Have an idea where you are going for each page, but really narrow down and focus the efforts. It's not really all that long, but Rand did an excellent write up on this (it's from 2007), but worth exploring further for sure to get the basics down. There is also a WB Friday from March this year where he touches on it. Anyways, hope it helps!
-
You're very welcome.
I have to say that I don't really know for sure the answer to your question on keyword cannibalization. What you may want to do is start a new topic to ask specifically about that and then people with more knowledge on the subject than me can chime in. I'm interested in seeing if anything changes once you make your changes though!
-
Marie, you are awesome. All your insight has really helped me to understand better what we can do and what requires waiting. I'll take some actions ASAP.
Just a quick question about something I've already mentioned - can the fact that I created specific pages with optimized content for each keyword affect the homepage's possibilities to rank due to keyword cannibalization?
Look at this page, for instance, this is the one I created for "refacciones bmw":
http://www.refaccionariaalemana.com.mx/refacciones-bmw
Am I shooting myself in the foot with this? Consider our competitor has NO optimized content whatsoever, not in their homepage nor nowhere else.
Thank you!
-
It certainly is possible that bad links are affecting the site's ability to rank well. If you disavowed, then there's a good chance that you won't see the benefit of that disavow until the next Penguin refresh and in some cases, two refreshes need to happen. You're right - you would expect to see a drop that coincides with the date of a Penguin refresh if Penguin were the sole culprit but there's still a lot we don't know about Penguin. Hopefully it will refresh soon and you'll see some improvement.
You may want to assess the site for Panda issues as well. Google has 735 pages indexed. If a good number of these are ones that don't add significant value on their own then this can cause Google to lose some trust in the quality of your site. Here are some pages that are indexed that probably shouldn't be:
http://www.refaccionariaalemana.com.mx/Tienda/ifrBlank.aspx
http://www.refaccionariaalemana.com.mx/Tienda/ifrLogin.aspx
http://www.refaccionariaalemana.com.mx/Tienda/ifrComprar.aspx
http://www.refaccionariaalemana.com.mx/Tienda/NoResultados.aspx
I'd go through the site and either noindex or remove pages like this. If there is a Panda issue then Panda tends to refresh about once a month but Google doesn't announce the dates of refreshes anymore. Again it can sometimes take a couple of refreshes to notice a difference.
Here are a couple of other things to consider:
-There is very little text above the fold of your home page. This could trigger the above the fold page layout algorithm.
-The page might be keyword stuffed. I don't speak Spanish, but when I translate the page the word "parts" appears 22 times. If keyword stuffing is an issue, then removing they keyword stuffing can often produce good results quite quickly.
Ah! I just did Google translate and realized that "refacciones bmw" for which you want to rank is "BMW parts". It certainly is possible that you are being demoted for keyword stuffing.

The image shows only organic traffic. Not sure what you mean about not finding my competitor. I can see it in Google results first page for the target keywords. Thank you Sean.
-
Duh, sorry the image shows ONLY organic traffic.
-
I have to ask did you grab a screenshot of Organic traffic only or all traffic?
I am also wondering while looking at your competitor I can't find any indexing of the site or rankings. Is there another competitor
-
Hello guys. Thanks for your answers, I really appreciate them.
I have definitely thought Pengiun has the culprit of this, but when looking at analytics (see attached image) there hasn't been a huge traffic drop that would make it obvious there was an algorithmic penalty, also there hasn't been manual penalties against the site.
I am guessing my client's keywords didn't bring much traffic anyway before the theoretical penalty, so that's probably why there is not a decrease in traffic? Can this be a keyword-specific penalty?
My client's site is www.refaccionariaalemana.com.mx
Competitor's site is www.saferefacciones.com
Sample keyword: "refacciones bmw" (my client wants to rank for variations on these keyword, just changing the brand name".
Thank you so much!
-
Oleg might have a point. A quick tool you can run to get a snapshot of his analytics, overlayed with the various updates for Penguin and Panda (and other non-named updates) that could have affected it. Use this tool quickly, and you should could correlate a penalty with his traffic. Titled the PANGUIN tool It's useful to get a quick look at his analytics when you connect the Google account. You will see a drastic drop in organic traffic, and it will align with an update Google did which may be the penalty Oleg was referring too.
Without direct access to his analytics, the site, his URL, the non-ranking keywords, the competitor site, etc, it's about the best we can do!
Hope it helps, if it's the case!
-
Sounds like you were hit by Penguin and/or a manual penalty.. check his analytics and GWT accounts for more insight on that (i.e. when google organic traffic dropped).
I would focus on building more links to the brand name and modifying any current links to improve the anchor text ratio. If he has a manual penalty, you'll need to submit a reconsideration request.
If you share website info, I can take a look.

Google Indexing
Hi We have roughly 8500 pages in our website. Google had indexed almost 6000 of them, but now suddenly I see that the pages indexed has gone to 45. Any possible explanations why this might be happening and what can be done for it. Thanks, Priyam

Why does some sites rank with no seo
Why is it that some site rank with zero efforts? I have been working on some seo for a while on my main site and i have been getting more info competition analysis with sem and moz. Looking at the states from this website which tends to popup often in the searches on page 1-2 before my site. This site is not keyword optimized, meaning they arent even trying to rank.

There is no content, articles etc.,
6 backlinks (nothing powerful just 2 directory links and 2 from developer)
Site really isnt even designed to get traffic as its a trade only ecommerce website
I doubt they are hiding anything as far as backlinks etc. as it will get them too many visitors they dont want
The city i am searching isnt even on the page (it is a city within a city so maybe google still relates it)
PA 24 DA 15 Now my site:
Optimized reasearched keywords
175 backlinks
All my main pages have content with images, alt tags, internal linking
full of content, blogs, videos, products (probably 4000, could a site being too big be an issue?)
Site gets regular updates
I probably have 200 citations
All the social media which gets done often
PA 32 DA 20 They do get a good bit of traffic but that is probably the only thing i would see but it would be direct traffic mostly i believe as it would be people going to order regularly since it is a print reseller. They may have some age on me 15 vs 8 years. Could it be some kind of penalty i am not sure about lingering? According to what i know to check everyything looks ok, no shady links accoding to sem. I am working more and more on all the pages but this competittion site really doesnt have crap going on probably 8 pages and 1 page does all the ordering. What the hell does google want from me exactly!0 -
Why do Local "5 pack" results vary between showing Google+, Google+ and website address
I had a client ask me a good question. When they pull up a search result they show up at the top but only with a link to their G+ page. Other competitors show their web address and G+ page. Why are these results different in the same search group? Is there a way to ensure the web address shows up?

Bing Ranking Factors
I'm curious about the relationship (or lack of ) between Google rankings and Bing rankings. We took a huge hit last winter with Google and have since gotten back up to the top 3 and have been holding steady on all our most important terms. Most of our losses since regaining Google, have been with Bing. This week, we dropped 44 points on Bing and Yahoo! for our most important term. Are there known factors for Bing ranking? If so, can anyone please enlighten me? And does anyone think Bing rankings even matter these days?

Google and private networks?
I have one or two competitors (in the UK) in my field who buy expired 1 - 8 year old domains on random subjects (SEO, travel, health you name it) and they are in the printing business and they stick 1 - 2 articles (unrelated to what was on there before) on these and that's it. I think they stick with PA and DA above 30 and most have 10 – 100 links so well used expired domains, hosted in the USA and most have different Ip’s although they now have that many (over 70% of their backlink profile) that some have the same ip. On further investigation none of the blogs have any contact details but it does look like they have been a little smart here and added content to the about us (similar to I use to run xxx but now do xxx) also they have one or two tabs with content on (article length) that is on the same subject they use to do and the titles are all the same content. So basically they are finding expired 1 – 10 year old domains that have only been expired (from what I can see) 6 months max and putting 1 – 2 articles on the home page in relation with print (maybe adding a third on the subject the blog use to cover), add 1 – 3 articles via tabs at the top on subjects the sites use to cover, registering the details via xbybssgcf@whoisprivacyprotect.com and that’s it. They have been ranking via this method for the last couple of years (through all the Google updates) and still do extremely well. Does Google not have any way to combat link networks other than the stupid stuff such as public link networks, it just seems that if you know what you are doing you get away, if your big enough you get away with it but the middle of the ground (mum and pop sites) get F*** over with spam pointing to there site that no spammer would dream of doing anyway?

My site still out of rank
Hello, I am working on a site for past 3 months, here are the problems with this site, 1. It had a forum full of spam becuase initially captcha was not included, 10000 spam backlinks 2. Affiliate page was also hit by spam about 4000 spam backlinks which were either not existing or porn etc.... 3. Too many internal links which were indexed, these additional links were generated due to tags, ids, filters etc. Existing SEO team decided to remove the forum and after 30 days they blocked it in robots. But within 30 days the site moved from 3rd page to no where. Now after few days lator internal links are also cleaned by putting following in the robots, Dissallow: / *? Dissallow: / *id Dissallow: / *tag Links are now cleaning up, all the spam and bad links are now put into disavow file and sent to google via disavow tool. On daily bases good quality links are been produced such as through content, article submission, profile linking, Bookmarks etc. The site is still not any where on top 50 results. The impressions are decreasing, traffic also do not rise as much. How do you see all this situation. What do you suggest and how long do you think it will take to return to top 10 when good linking is being done and all preventive measures are being taken. I would appreciate any feedback on it. Thank you. Site URL: http://www.creativethemes.net keywords: magento themes, magento templates

Google bot vs google mobile bot
Hi everyone 🙂 I seriously hope you can come up with an idea to a solution for the problem below, cause I am kinda stuck 😕 Situation: A client of mine has a webshop located on a hosted server. The shop is made in a closed CMS, meaning that I have very limited options for changing the code. Limited access to pagehead and can within the CMS only use JavaScript and HTML. The only place I have access to a server-side language is in the root where a Defualt.asp file redirects the visitor to a specific folder where the webshop is located. The webshop have 2 "languages"/store views. One for normal browsers and google-bot and one for mobile browsers and google-mobile-bot.In the default.asp (asp classic). I do a test for user agent and redirect the user to one domain or the mobile, sub-domain. All good right? unfortunately not. Now we arrive at the core of the problem. Since the mobile shop was added on a later date, Google already had most of the pages from the shop in it's index. and apparently uses them as entrance pages to crawl the site with the mobile bot. Hence it never sees the default.asp (or outright ignores it).. and this causes as you might have guessed a huge pile of "Dub-content" Normally you would just place some user-agent detection in the page head and either throw Google a 301 or a rel-canon. But since I only have access to JavaScript and html in the page head, this cannot be done. I'm kinda running out of options quickly, so if anyone has an idea as to how the BEEP! I get Google to index the right domains for the right devices, please feel free to comment. 🙂 Any and all ideas are more then welcome.

Ranking Factors for Google
Yesterday a blog post appeared on SEOMOZ titled 'A Tale Of Two Studies' - http://www.seomoz.org/blog/a-tale-of-two-studies-google-vs-bing-clickthrough-rate It suggested some of the ranking factors Google and Bing take into account when ranking. A few of them I want to talk about: Social Signals, Age of Domain and H1 HTML Tag So I thought age of domain and H1 both had some weight in Google? I guess not! And social signals, now I know it gives some weight but its right up there in the list for both SE's, so should getting likes, tweets, plus1's now be part of my everyday link building?
