Is there a benefit in buying re-directed domains?
-
We're an online theater news and reviews site. We're moderately popular in our industry.
We're considering purchasing related domains (e.g. theatertickets.com, theaterticketing.com, etc) that redirect to our main site.
Is there a marketing or SEO value in doing this?
-
I would not purchase a domain just to immediately redirect it, no. If it was me, I would set up a highly focused landing page on the domain, or a mini-site full of information related to the domain that then links out to your main site. Just buying up domains hoping someone will type it in and be redirected will not work. As a stand-alone redirected domain there is little value UNLESS it was a high-ranking high authority domain before you redirected it, at which point there can be some SEO value.
If you choose to go the landing page route, here is a pretty nice guide. Super awesome link

Hi there,
As I understand it, you can benefit from redirecting related domains to your main site in a few ways:
1. Purchasing domains that are similar to your own can be a tactical decision to help reduce competition.
If you own them, no one else can use them. Also, if these 'similar domains' possess keywords your main site ranks for, it will be harder for copycat businesses to register these domains, pop up and compete with you directly at the domain level.
2. There is SEO value if you are purchasing the domain from an established website that has established relevant content.
As I understand it, simply purchasing an unused domain that's similar to your own won't have any inherent SEO value (except for country specific domains which I touch on below). A primary factor in determining how much 'google juice' google allocates a domain in the search results is content. So in order to really benefit from additional domains, you would need to flesh out relevant content on these domains and link through to your main site. Ideally these domains would then rank alongside your main domain and push your competitors down a few spots in the search ranking. Your main site would then benefit from the network of links from the 'outlier' sites which feed back to your main site. The major con here is the time and effort involved.
Alternately, you could keep your eyes peeled and when the opportunity arises, acquire a similar domain from an established competitor who is trying to sell up. In the latter case, (if his DA is high enough and content is relevant) by creating redirects from his pages to your main domain, google will pass his 'google juice' to your main domain, and that's beneficial. The major limitation here is that it's not often you can buy out a competitor, and when you can, they often have a skewed view of how valuable their domain actually is.
3. Purchasing similar domains that are country specific could be beneficial.
If you have an international audience it can be beneficial to purchase country specific domains and link these back to your main site. For example, you main sites domain is http://www.theatermania.com/. Purchasing the .co.uk version would be a good idea if you wanted to help customers in the UK find you in the search engines when they search from the UK. As far as i'm aware, more weight is lended to a .co.uk domain when searching from the UK, so this domain may appear higher in the search results than your .com when appropriate phrases are entered into the engines.
This is my understanding of it all! I hope it helps you in some way. And to the other readers, correct me on any point if I'm wrong / slightly off, missed anything.

International Re-sellers Scrapping My Site Should I be Worried?
We are a USA based company and we only sell direct to the US and Canada. However, we have partnered with other companies that are now distributing our products in other places like Australia and Mexico for example. These partners have scrapped our site and have used large chunks of our content to create a website for themselves on their intentional domains (ex.. .au and .mx). How concerned should I be about this? Should I reach out to them and require that they use rel="alternate" hreflang="x" or request the to stop? I have never had to deal with international SEO issues before, so any advice and direction would be appreciated!

Does Google look at Domain Registrar owner information when counting links into a site?
Question: If the domain registrar owner info is the same on two websites, will Google/other search engines discredit any linking between the two sites when calculating page rank? We have two company sites. One is our main ecommerce domain which we have been linking into from information domains in the past. We recently cut ties with the company that hosted them for us and wish to host them ourselves to preserve the inbound traffic. We are worried, however, that the traffic will be discredited now that we own both domains. Thanks for looking!

What is the negative effect of getting affiliate links to your domain?
Are the negative effects of affiliate links to your domain bigger than the positive effects? Is it better to use a subdomain for your affiliate campaigns? (Because of linkprofile no follow links or time on page effects?) Thanks for responce!

What is an 'Anchor Text' and does it have any SEO Benefit?
Hi - we have been building as SEO strategy but need clarification on what benefit 'anchor text' has for SEO rankings? For example - we have been creating links from external sites to ours, but the anchor text is not our main search term. I.E - the Anchor Text reads 'web design', but the ALT TAG reads 'web design birmingham'. Question is - if we wish to achieve maximum SEO rankings for the term 'web design birmingham', where should it appear....in the ALT TAG or the Annchor text'? Many thanks! Phil

How much SEO benefit am I getting from 'affiliate' links?
Hi all, We run lots of different campaigns with affiliates and as such they have links on their websites pointing back to ours. I was keen to know how much 'link-juice' these kinds of links are passing back to our websites or how much SEO benefit we are getting from them. The links have "?=affiliate" in them. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!! Many thanks! Rob

What's an inexpensive way to maintain domain registration privacy?
Other than using a paid service like 'Domains by Proxy', is there a clever way to maintain my privacy with a domain registration w/o incurring the added annual cost of privacy service fees for every domain I own?

Should I put a promo code directly into Adwords copy?
Haven't worked with discount codes in years. Researching the ad copy I found very few sites putting the promo code directly in the ad copy. I thought this was a standard practice for increasing response. Do you know why companies with active promo codes don't use them in Adwords copy?
