Change in sitemap from XML to PHP caused to lose all organic rankings
-
Hi MOZers,
I need some advice for my website: http://www.scorepromotions.ca/
I recently changed the sitemap submitted to GWT from http://www.scorepromotions.ca/sitemap.xml to http://www.scorepromotions.ca/google-sitemap.php
I deleted the previously submitted XML sitemap from GWT on Friday & submitted the PHP sitemap on the advice of our developer.
On Saturday, I noticed that all our organic rankings disappeared. So, I changed the PHP sitemap back to XML sitemap on Sunday.
I am hoping to see my organic rankings recover to previous levels.
Does anyone have any advice or experience to share about this issue ?
Ankush

Jesse,
Thank you so much for the response. Much appreciated. It really narrowed down the problem for me .
I will begin auditing the backlinks & adding them to the disavow tool.
Will really appreciate if you have any suggestions for a recovery?
Cheers!

Unfortunately I sincerely doubt it has anything to do with your sitemap changes.
Seeing as how Google released a major Penguin update Friday, the fact that your rankings were lost Saturday morning seems to fit that timeline perfectly. It would be a pretty crazy coincidence otherwise, and sitemap changes truly should not affect rankings like that.
A quick look at ahrefs to peep your backlink profile and it does smell a little fishy. The growth in linking root domains you've had over the past few months has been pretty intense.. huge leap from april thru july and that's indicative of some blackhat SEO work.
Your anchor text seems to be keyed to a lot of spammy phrases like "promotional products" and **"corporate gifts."**This could also be triggering the Penguin penalties. I see a lot of links from sites like "freeseodirectory.com" and that's another red flag right there.. directory links, forum spam, etc.
Start digging through those backlinks, check your google webmaster account and watch for notifications of manual action. It still could be an algorithmic penalty even without notification though.. Just check out your SEO practices. You should know what you're doing to gain links and my guess would be it's in violation.
Good luck!

Hi,
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | SharonEKG
so our website (www.18brandz.com) has been up for 8 months now and has not been ranking yet, we are indexing, moz crawler SEO issues are regularly fixed and we are down to about 25 non major issues, i started using google lighthouse to optimize and had made changes. we post GOOD quality in house written unique content, we follow an SEO templet of guideline i wrote for titles/meta title tags, structure, site speed has been optimized and as for the moment we rank A OR B with no major issues on all speed checking sites possible (gtmetrix/google speed insights/ webspeed... etc) but nothing. and i cant figure out why we wont rank, our field of digital marketing is a tough one and very competitive , i know, yet not ranking for so long seems odd. our only know fact major disadvantage is the lack of links and no link building strategy. any suggestions? any idea?1 -
Change of content
Hello, When you do a major change of content on a page I know it takes time to start seeing some results in terms of ranking. Let's say I make a change today expecting to see the first results of that change 2 months from now. Let's say in a month I decide to add some content and make again some minor changes. Do I have to wait another 2 months starting on the date I made my 2 nd changes to see some results or will I see the results of the 1 change as originally planned 2 months after my major content change ? Thank you,

Navigational Changes
Need some advice on when to use canonical vs. redirects for navigation changes to a website. However, if there are other options i am open to them as well. We are consolidating some navigational paths and moving others We are renaming product pages (therefore creating new product pages, CMS platform requirements) Keep in mind we have desktop domain and a mobile domain Questions Do we redirect old URL's to the new product page URL's? Do we redirect old mobile URL's to new mobile URL's or to the desktop equivalent? Do we redirect all old product page URL's containing navigation elements to the new product page URL? If we have a category page being added to two different sections how do we determine the right canonical URL? (the URL will be different because the customer paths will be different) Do we need to make sure and redirect all old URL's to a new URL? If so, what is the best way to find all of the URL's?

Ranking Above sub-domains
So I work for a company that has a very successful affiliate that operates under a third level domain name such as "region.company.com". Their SEO practices are very good and they rank highly in keyword searches. However "company.com" does not even though it is not a subdomain. Even after optimizing the company.com's pages etc, the regional sub domain ranks much higher for keywords and the main company fails to rank at all. Is Google discounting the main company's page? Is it a matter of trust or time? or is it something else? How can I get Google to prioritize the main company website rather than a lower level domain affiliate?

Why Is This Page Not Ranking?
Hi Mozzers, I can't rank (the page is nowhere on the Google grid that I can find) and I've not been able to move the needle at all on it. The page is http://www.lumber2.com/Western-Saddle-Pads-s/98.htm for keyword "western saddle pads." I'm inclined to think I'm cannabalizing the category with the products so I removed the word saddle from the majority of the product names on page. However, saddle pad or saddle pads is in the meta title for most if not all of the products. Do you think I'm cannabalizing with the product titles or is there something else going on? Thanks for any help.

Ranking stuck
Hello, I have a client with whom we are doing all the "right" things. We have a blog we add relevant content to once a week, we post on facebook, google+, twitter. We have stumbleupon and tumblr links. We have nice high pr links from local non-profits whom we sponsor for charity events. We are in the local citation sites and have 5 real reviews (working on more) But we are stuck anywhere from page 4 to page 2 for most of our keywords, which are all insurance related in the Gainesville area. I would love to hear some fresh ideas! http://dukeinsuranceagency.com , thanks!!
