Ranking Ranking Factors!
-
When you look at the keyword analysis, you see the following ranking criteria:
-
| Page Authority | Page Linking Root Domains | Domain Authority | Root Domain Linking Root Domains |
How do you rank the importance of each of these factors from 1-4?
For example, PA, PLRD, RDLRD, DA
Please explain.
How many of these factors do you normally need to get within top 5?
-
As a predictive metric, both Domain Authority and number of linking root domains are among the highest in terms of predicting a site's ability to rank for a given term, all other things being equal.
But there's a better way to answer the question. If you want to know what it takes to crack the top 5 for a given keyword, run the query through the SEOmoz Keyword Analysis tool. If your a PRO member, be sure to run an Advanced Report. This will give you a good idea why the top 10 are ranking the way they are, and what you have to do to beat them.
Each keyword is different. The reasons one set of results is returned in Google will inevitably vary from the reasons it returns a different set for a different keyword. Sometimes you need social shares, sometimes Domain Authority, sometimes raw links. Most often, it's a subtle combination of dozens of factors.
-
I don't think it's quite as simple as that.
You can take any of these metrics in isolation, you need to look at the relative strengths compared to your own site and make a judgement call. If all things are equal then if you can beat these scores, you should out-rank them, but in the real world it doesn't trend to be as simple as that, especially as you start competing for more and more competitive terms.
Looking at these four metrics can give you a quick feel for hoe strong your site/page has to be to get into the game, they can't predict the outcome.
This page might give you a feel for the relative importance of various ranking factors:

As for your question, "how many of these factors do you normally need to get within top 5?" well it all depends!
Remember that these aren't the only factors that search engines use when ranking pages. It's perfectly possible to outrank a page that beats you in ALL of these factors by producing a page that's tightly targetted around the chosen keywords. You can beat the competition on relevancy (assuming that there the competing pages aren't so relevant!)
I would say that finding such keywords, where there's a ton of traffic and few relevant pages is rare and my guess is that this is only likely to happen for brand related keywords.

Ranking fluctuation
Has anybody got any ideas? I have a website that ranks quite well for an industry keyword, the site has a reasonable amount of authority. But the term is fluctuating between position 3 and position 9! It is on a beefy stable server. It is reasonably well optimised from both SEO and speed point of view. It is tracked using Moz RankTracker. I do realise that rankings fluctuate, but this is ridiculous!

.net has replaced our .com rankings - what the heck?
We have a www.domain.net that domain forwards to www.domain.com. About 5 days ago, when searching for our brand term, I noticed that www.domain.net took the top position, and most of our www.domain.com rankings have dropped. The www.domain.net is set to forward to www.domain.com. Any ideas what could cause something like this to happen?

How long before your rankings improved after Penguin?
Those of you that have algorithmic penalties, how long after making changes did you actually see an improvement, or have you ever? I have several sites that tanked after Penguin 2.1 and after doing Link Removal, Diasvaow files and building newer more quality links and adding content, I am STILL not seeing any change in rankings after several months. I have heard from some people it can take up to 6-months for google to even crawl a disavow file. I have also heard no matter what you do it won't matter until Google does another update. I feel like we have made a lot of changes in the right direction, but I don't want to go overboard if nothing is going to matter until another Google Update is done. What are your experiences?

Re-platform effects on Page Rank
We are performing a major replatform for an ecommerce client who has many top listings on page 1 in Google SERPs for very competitive terms. We are implementing a 301 redirect for all existing URLs that they have now to the appropriate new URLs, but the client is concerned with how deploying a new site with 100% new URLs and site structure will impact their Page Rank. From our experience, the 301 redirects should cover it but wanted to see if there is a way to predictively forecast page rank effects as a result of re-platforming.

Deep Page is Ranking for Main Keyword, But I Want the Home Page to Rank
A deep page is ranking for a competitive and essential keyword, I'd like the home page to rank. The main reasons are probably: This specific page is optimized for just that keyword. Contains keyword in URL I've optimized the home page for this keyword as much as possible without sacrificing the integrity of the home page and the other keywords I need to maintain. My main question is: If I use a 301 redirect on this deep page to the home page, am I risking my current ranking, or will my home page replace it on the SERPs? Thanks so much in advance!

Bing and Yahoo rankings
I must admit its every 3 months or so I check these listings 🙂 I would even admit we are that engrossed in google we forget these sites exist many times. I wanted to see if anyone had experience doing sep for these sites and what sort of techniques you used in order to help improve these rankings. I tend to get great listings on Yahoo for many sites but bing seems slightly different. Would love to find out some information on the algos on each of these.
