Google Cache can't keep up with my 403s
-
Hi Mozzers,
I hope everyone is well.
I'm having a problem with my website and 403 errors shown in Google Webmaster Tools. The problem comes because we "unpublish" one of the thousands of listings on the site every few days - this then creates a link that gives a 403. At the same time we also run some code that takes away any links to these pages. So far so good.
Unfortunately Google doesn't notice that we have removed these internal links and so tries to access these pages again. This results in a 403.
These errors show up in Google Webmaster Tools and when I click on "Linked From" I can verify that that there are no links to the 403 page - it's just Google's Cache being slow.
My question is
a) How much is this hurting me?
b) Can I fix it?
All suggestions welcome and thanks for any answers!

Hi Ray-pp,
Thanks for this. I think we will redirect to similar pages.
Much appreciated!

So... why return a 403 Forbidden? A 404 Not Found is what you should return. That sends a stronger signal than a 403. Either way, both will eventually lead to the pages being de-indexed. If you need the pages gone faster, there is a way to manually de-index a page using Webmaster Tools.

Hi HireSpace,
a) The negative impact depends on:
- Is there traffic landing on this page from any outside channel (organic, referral, paid marketing)
If so, then yes it is probably hurting your site. If a visitor sees a 403 page a common response is to go directly back to the referring page, i.e. they leave your site.
- Did the 403'd page have external links pointing to the page?
If yes, then a 403 error would cause the link authority to drop, since you do not redirect that page to another page on your site.
- As far as SEO is concerned, no this isn't negatively impacting your site.
When Google sees a 403 error they pretty much handle it like any other 400 error. They wont penalize you, however, having a lot of 400 errors could be an indication of poor usability and we know how Google loves to introduce new ranking factors for the SERPs.
b) Can I fix it?
Yes, I suggest, for any page removed from your site, that you 301 the page to its closest related page. This tells G that the page is permanently moved to a new page, pass any authority to that page, and anyone landing on the old page is automatically redirected to the new page. You'll see the 403 errors decrease as G crawls your site and recognizes the 301 redirect.

Webmaster tools not showing links but Moz OSE is showing links. Why can't I see them in the Google Search Console
Hi, Please see attached photos. I have a website that shows external follow links when performing a search on open site explorer. However, they are not recognised or visible in search console. This is the case for both internal and external links. The internal links are 'no follow' which I am getting developer to rectify. Any ideas why I cant see the 'follow' external links? Thanks in advance to those who help me out. Jesse T7dkL5s T7dkL5s OkQmPL4 3qILHqS

Manual Action - When requesting links be removed, how important to Google is the address you're sending the requests from?
We're starting a campaign to get rid of a bunch of links, and then submitting a disavow report to Google, to get rid of a manual action. My SEO vendor said he needs an @email domain from the website in question @travelexinsurance.com, to send and receive emails from vendors. He said Google won't consider the correspondence to and from webmasters if sent from a domain that is not the one with the manual action penalty. Due to company/compliance rules, I can't allow a vendor not in our building to have an email address like that. I've seen other people mention they just used a GMAIL.com account. Or we could use a similar domain such as @travelexinsurancefyi.com. My question, how critical is it that the domain the correspondence with the webmasters be from the exact website domain?

Why isn't my site not searchable from google?
I am having a hard time figuring out why is it that when I search for my website name, it didn't show up in google's search result? Here's a link to my site. I've been twiddling for days looking for answers in my google webmaster tools. Here's a link of the crawl stats from google webmaster tool. As you can see it is actually crawling some pages. However my looking at my indexed status, I am getting 0 as you can see here (http://cl.ly/image/3G1R1p0b3k1P). I've double checked for my robots.txt and nothing seemed to be out of the ordinary there. I am not blocking anything. Any ideas why?

Why are Google search results different if you are log'd into Google or not?
I get different results when I'm log'd into my Google account associated with my website than if I'm not. The same country is occurring. So how can I rely on the google results I'm seeing? For instance my site is page 1 with the improvements I made based on SEOMOZ if I'm log'd in. Yet I'm not on the first 25 pages if I'm not logged in.

Wordpress & use of 'www' vs not for webmaster tools - explanation needed
I am having a hard time understanding the issue of canonization of site pages, specifically in regards to the 'www' or 'non-www' versions of a site. And specifically in regards to wordpress. I can see that it doesn't matter whether you type in 'www' or not in the url for a wordpress site, what is going on in the back end that allows this? When I link up to google webmaster tools, should i use www or not? thanks for any help d

Sitemap coming up in Google's index?
I apologize if this question's answer is glaringly obvious, but I was using Google to view all the pages it has indexed of our site--by searching for our company and then clicking the link that says to display more results for the site. On page three, it has the sitemap indexed as if it wee just another page of our site. <cite>www.stadriemblems.com/sitemap.xml</cite> Is this supposed to happen?
