Odd 404 pages
-
Evening all,
I've performed a Screaming Frog technical crawl of a site, and it's returning links like this as 404s:
http://clientsite.co.uk/accidents-caused-by-colleagues/js/modernizr-2.0.6.min.js
Now, I recognise that Modernizr is used for detecting features in the user's browser - but why would it have created an indexed page that no longer exists?
Would you leave them as is? 410 them? Or do something else entirely?
Thanks for reading, I look forward to hearing your thoughts!
Kind regards,
John.

Hello John,
I wouldn't assume that modernizr actually created a page. More likely, the relative path to the minified javascript file was found by Google in your source code, and Google tried to access it. Perhaps the path was wrong (e.g. /js/ exists off the root, not within that "/accidents..." folder) so when Google tried to access that resource it could not be found.
I would leave it as-is if the URL produces a 404 status code. However, I would also find the code on that page and see whether it uses the correct path or not. You don't want to block those files, but you don't want Google wasting crawl budget on pages that don't exist either.
If you can't figure out what's causing it I would contact the folks at modernizr. You can see their Twitter profiles at the bottom of this page: http://modernizr.com/ .

Hi there
I would check and see if this resource link needs to be updated, and if you still use it, update it in your template.
If it's no longer useful or available, remove it.
Hope this helps! Good luck!

Indexed pages
Just started a site audit and trying to determine the number of pages on a client site and whether there are more pages being indexed than actually exist. I've used four tools and got four very different answers... Google Search Console: 237 indexed pages Google search using site command: 468 results MOZ site crawl: 1013 unique URLs Screaming Frog: 183 page titles, 187 URIs (note this is a free licence, but should cut off at 500) Can anyone shed any light on why they differ so much? And where lies the truth?

Redirect for Soft 404 or 404?
I have a client site that displays properties from the MLS. Once these properties sell they're removed from the MLS and they stop showing up on her site. This would result in a 404 error, but right now any property that's not being found is being 301 redirected back to the property page. I see how this makes sense for a user, but Google is saying there's an increase in Soft 404 errors and I've read that this could negatively affect organic traffic. Should I keep the redirect for removed properties or should I have it serve a 404 with a message that the house you're looking for may have sold and link to the property page? Is it better to have Soft 404 errors or 404 errors?

Duplicate pages on wordpress
I am doing SEO on a site which is running on WP. And it has all pages and categories duplicates on domain.com/site/ However, as it got crawled I saw that all domain.com/ pages have rel=canonical with main page tag (does it mean something?). Thing is I will fix permalinks structure and I think WP automatically redirects if it is changed from /?page_id= to /%category%/%postname%/ or /%postname%/ Isn't there something I miss? Second problems is a forum. After a crawl it found over 5k errors and over 5k warnings. Those are: Duplicate page content; Duplicate page title; Overly-Dynamic URLs; Missing Meta descr; Title Element too long. All those come from domain.com/forum/ (fortunately, there are no domain.com/site/forum duplicates). What could be an easy solution to this?

Page that appears on SERPs is not the page that has been optimized for users
This may seem like a pretty newbie question, but I haven't been able to find any answers to it (I may not be looking correctly). My site used to rank decently for the KW "Gold name necklace" with this page in the search results:http://www.mynamenecklace.co.uk/Products.aspx?p=302This was the page that I was working on optimizing for user experience (load time, image quality, ease of use, etc.) since this page was were users were getting to via search. A couple months ago the Google SERP's started showing this page for the same query (also ranked a little lower, but not important for this specific question):http://www.mynamenecklace.co.uk/Products.aspx?p=314Which is a white gold version of the necklaces. This is not what most users have in mind (when searching for gold name necklace) so it's much less effective and engaging. How do I tell Google to go back to old page/ give preference to older page / tell them that we have a better version of the page / etc. without having to noindex any of the content? Both of these pages have value and are for different queries, so I can't canonical them to a single page. As far as external links go, more links are pointing to the Yellow gold version and not the white gold one.Any ideas on how to remedy this? Thanks.

However, Ever since I have started trying to backlink.. the more I seem to do, the more I seem to drop down the rankings! The same for both Bing and Yahoo... I am really not sure what the problem is. My site is www.arilinegamesatc.com, and the ranking words are airline games and airline game. Any help woudl be greatly appreciated!
