Can you use Screaming Frog to find all instances of relative or absolute linking?
-
My client wants to pull every instance of an absolute URL on their site so that they can update them for an upcoming migration to HTTPS (the majority of the site uses relative linking). Is there a way to use the extraction tool in Screaming Frog to crawl one page at a time and extract every occurrence of _href="http://" _?
I have gone back and forth between using an x-path extractor as well as a regex and have had no luck with either.
Ex. X-path: //*[starts-with(@href, “http://”)][1]
Ex. Regex: href=\”//

This only works if you have downloaded all the HTML files to your local computer. That said, it works quite well! I am betting this is a database driven site and so would not work in the same way.

Regex: href=("|'|)http:(?:/{1,3}|[a-z0-9%])|[a-z0-9.-]+.
This allows for your link to have the " or ' or nothing between the = and the http If you have any other TLDs you can just keep expanding on the |
I modified this from a posting in github https://gist.github.com/gruber/8891611
You can play with tools like http://regexpal.com/ to test your regexp against example text
I assumed you would want the full URL and that was the issue you were running into.
As another solution why not just fix the https in the main navigation etc, then once you get the staging/testing site setup, run ScreamingFrog on that site and find all the 301 redirects or 404s and then use that report to find all the URLs to fix.
I would also ping ScreamingFrog - this is not the first time they have been asked this question. They may have a better regexp and/or solution vs what I have suggested.

Depending on how you've coded everything you could try to setup a Custom Search under Configuration. This will scan the HTML of the page so if the coding was consistent you could put something like href="http://www.yourdomain.com" as the string it's looking for and in the Custom tab on the resulting pages it'll show you all the ones that match the string.
That's the only way I can think of to get Screaming Frog to pull it but looking forward to anyone else's thoughts.

If you have access to all the website's files, you could try finding all instances in the directory using something like Notepad++. Could even use find and replace.
This is how I tend to locate those one-liners among hundreds of files.
Good luck!

Should we use Cloudflare
Hi all, we want to speed up our website (hosted in Wordpress, traffic around 450,000 page views monthly), we use lots of images. And we're wondering about setting up on Cloudflare, however after searching a bit in Google I have seen some people say the change in IP, or possible sharing of Its with bad neighbourhoods, can really hit search rankings. So, I was wondering what the latest thinking is on this subject, would the increased speed and local server locations be a boost for SEO, moreso than a potential loss of rankings for changing IP? Thanks!

(I have mostly ranked on page for many years one but in the last two weeks ranking have dropped to page two)
The links have Anchor Text such as Scam - Dishonest - Drugs. Most of the of the links are "nofollow".
Will links with "nofollow" affect my ranking and if so which of the links should i priorities to remove?
Do I look at Link Equity - Domain Authority - Page Authority or other criteria? Many thanks

Which address do I use for citations
Hello, When I created my google places, I entered my address and when I got my google places activated I noticed that the address google places was displaying was a short abbreviation of my address. So my question is when it comes to creating citations for my listing do I grab the address google places generated for me in the listing or the long version of my address? I've just heard when it comes to creating citations, you need to make sure it is identical across the board. I hope this makes sense. Thanks!

Canonical Link Quesiton
I wrote an article that is a page article, but would also be a very good blog post - So my question is two things: 1. If i post it as a static page and syndicate it as a blog post and have it as a canonical link to the page, google will read see the blog and read the page _url as the one with credit correct? In turn not dinging me for duplicate content. 2. Given if the above statement is correct, should I write the blog and put it on my static page referencing the blog or the way i have it as a static page with the blog using a canonical reference back to the page. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Using the Canonical Tag
Hi, I have an issue that can be solve with a canonical tag, but I am not sure yet, we are developing a page full of statistics, like this: www.url.com/stats/ But filled with hundreds of stats, so users can come and select only the stats they want to see and share with their friends, so it becomes like a new page with their slected stats: www.url.com/stats/?id=mystats The problems I see on this is: All pages will be have a part of the content from the main page 1) and many of them will be exactly the same, so: duplicate content. My idea was to add the canonical tag of "www.url.com/stats/" to all pages, similar as how Rand does it here: http://www.seomoz.org/blog/canonical-url-tag-the-most-important-advancement-in-seo-practices-since-sitemaps But I am not sure of this solution because the content is not exactly the same, page 2) will only have a part of the content that page 1) has, and in some cases just a very small part. Is the canonical tag useful in this case? Thank you!
