Duplicate ecommerce domains and canonical
-
Hi everybody!
I'd like to discuss the SEO strategy I've thought regarding a client of mine and ask for help because it's a serious case of duplicate content.
There is a main website (the business model one) where he compares the cost of medicines in several pharmacies, to show the cheapest shopping cart to the customer. But the shopping has to been made in another domain, within the selected pharmacie, because my country's law in Europe says that is compulsory to sell the medicines only on the pharmacy website.
So my client has started to create domains, one for each pharmacy, where the differences between them are only some products, the business information of the pharmacy and the template's colour. But all of them shares the same product data base.
My aim is to rank the comparing website (it contains all the products), not each pharmacy, so I've started to create different content for this one. Should I place rel=canonical in the pharmacies domains t the original one? For instance:
www.pharmacie1.com >> www.originaltorank.com
www.pharmacie2.com >> www.originaltorank.com
www.pharmacie1.com/product-10 >> www.originaltorank.com/product-10
I've already discuss the possibilities to focus all the content in only one website, but it's compulsory to have different domains in order to sell medicines
By the way, I can't redirect 301 because I need these websites exist for the same reason (the law)
He is creating 1-3 new domains every week so obviously he has had a drop in his SEO traffic that I have to solve this fast.
Do you think the canonical will be the best solution? I dont want to noindex these domains beacuse we're creating Google Local pages for each one in order to be found in their villages.
Please, I'll appreciate any piece of advice. Thanks!

Thanks very much for your answer Dirk!
Yes, I'm not totally sure this is going to work but canonical is the best solution that came to my mind... It's a difficult situation. This is why I want to be totally transparent to Google to show that I don't want to do spam, but only searching for a solution.
Your idea regarding the products it's really smart, thanks!
Please if somebody thinks that it exists a better solution I want to know it!

You could start with putting a canonical url like you mentioned. Not sure if it's going to work - the way you describe the situation it seems like an old spam technique - creating thin content sites to create links to the main domain. Canonicals could still be considered as "links" to the main domain.
As you want to have the products indexed on the main domain you could noindex the product part on the individual pharmacie sites (noindex doesn't have to be done on domain level). That way you could still have the sites having Google Local pages & on the other hand be sure that Google will only index the products on the main site.

Duplicate content errors
I have multiple duplicate content errors in my crawl diagnostics. The problem is though that i already took care of these problems with the canonical tag but MOZ keeps saying there is a problem. For example this page http://www.letspump.dk/produkter/56-aminosyre/ has a canonical tag, but moz still says it has an error. Why is that?

Gallery system creates duplicates
Hi, Does anybody know what can I do with those “duplicate content pages”? 1/ home page shows 4 different urls with different parameters. Should I use meta-robots tag to eliminate it? Or block it in robots.txt? http://screencast.com/t/xqNiowCYBwgh 2/ Also, there are dozens of duplicates created by the “gallery system”. Like this: http://screencast.com/t/qTq4YERG All showing for the same url. There are multiple pages for each location. Some people told me that it's irrelevant for rankings anyway. I suggested getting rid of flash website alltogether and getting a smooth wordpress installation, but it's not an option. Can you please help me with it? Best Regards, JJ

Duplicate biographies across several domains?
Hey Gang, We've built a niche specific, manually edited legal community that is full of unique content. (While it's ultimately a directory, and that is often viewed as a bad word in these times, ours is a curated source that doesn't allow anyone and everyone to join.) We feel comfortable that it passes the sniff test post-panda/penguin, etc., and its doing rather well to date. The question we have is do we really need to create unique biographies for each of our legal members? Some of our competitors simply use the same bio information that the lawyer has on their own website and copies that to their site. The competitors I'm talking about are LARGE, well-respected, extremely successful folks, like FindLaw. Here's an example: Lawyer's website bio FindLaw website bio Both rank, etc., and the FindLaw code doesn't place any restrictions on their content regarding the bio., and it's an obvious exact match. I get that duplicate content is primarily a concern among one's own URL and the pages across a specific domain, using rel-canonical, etc., but what about two different domains that need to supply factual information that can't be altered? Is it anything we should worry ourselves with? Any tags we should insert in our code with regard to the bios? Thanks!!! Wayne

Ecommerce: content on category pages
I have to optimize some online Shops and after Panda I really don't know what to think about thin content on product overview pages anymore... used to be that we could improve our rankings easily just by adding 1-2 sentences on such a page. This always worked for non-overly competitive terms. Now It feels like it doesn't work any longer, but I couldn't put my finger on it and I don't have the resources to test. Here's an example of what I mean: http://www.geschenkidee.ch/wandtattoos/aus_aller_welt.html

I would add max. 3 lines of text directly over the product thumbnails. What do you think? Is it worth adding some text on a product overview page or do I not even have to bother post-Panda?0 -
301 redirect (www.domain.com/index to www.domain.com)
Hello, Please let me know what are the exact right steps in order to get rid of the duplicate content issues related with: www.domain.com/index.html same as www.domain.com without creating an infinite loop. Do you have a step by step guide posted within seomoz including 301 redirect for non www to www for all urls and index.whatever to main domain name without going into a infinite loop ? btw how to you spot the loop ? is it obvious like never ending refresh of the home page ? thanks a lot !
