Is there a best practice for how to set up an Age Restriction prompt for a website (vape equiptment)
-
I am working on a website that sells vape equipment and supplies and is required to have an age restriction (birthday) prompt in order to enter the site. Is there a 'best practice' way to implement this?
-
Chris, we typically recommend that you would identify Google's bot(s) and not serve up the notice to Googlebot. You can certainly also set up a popup (popover) that shows the first time someone visits within a certain period of time--and then not show it on subsequent visits. So Google would get it the first time, and maybe not get it again for another 10 days or 30 days.

Hi Eric, Thank you for your answer. I should have been mnore specific in how I phrased the question. I am looking for a best practice from an SEO perspective. Is there a standard way to ensure the google spider can reach this content? Maybe turn off the prompt if a certain signature is present but not sure if might be penalized if content is modified based on spider signature.

There are restrictions for certain locations, based on what I see in Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regulation_of_electronic_cigarettes. You may need to find the laws in your location and see what's required in your location.
As for a standard text or other popup, if your country doesn't require it, you may not need to have a popup (or you may need to determine the user's location based on their IP address and have it popup for certain users only). For standard text, I would look at some of your competitors to see if what they are doing--and consult your attorney or lawyer to make sure your business is compliant (they may provide you with the text to use).

Website Redesign & Ensuring Minimal Traffic/Rankings Lost
Hi there, We have undergone a website redesign (mycompany.com) and our site is ready to go live however the new website is built on a different platform so all of our blog pages will not be copied over - to avoid a large web developer expense. So our intention is to then leave all the blog pages as (on the old web design) but move it to the domain blog.mycompany.com with 301 redirects inserted on mycompany.com for each blog post pointing to the corresponding blog.mycompany.com. Is there anything else we should do to ensure minimal traffic/rankings are lost? Thank you so much for your help.

Website Redesign and Migration to Squarespace killed my Ranking
My old website was dated, ugly, impossible to update and a mess between hard-coded pages and WP, but we were ranking #1 in the organic searches for our key words. I just redesigned my website using Squarespace. I kept most of the same text on the pages (for key words) and kept the same Meta-Tags and Title Tags for each page as much as possible. Once I was satisfied that I had done as much on-page optimization as I could, I changed the IP in our Domain Name Registry so that it would point to our new website on the Squarespace host. And our new website was live! ...Then I watched in dismay as our ranking fell into oblivion. I think this might have something to do with not doing any 301 redirects from the old website and losing all of my link juice. Is this the case? And, if so, how do I fix it? Our website url is www.kanataskinclinic.ca Thanks

Seperating Different Parts Of The Website
Hi There, I have a client with two parts to his business both for different types of customer with different language and copy needed. At the moment they have one website and I am trying to figure out the most search engine friendly way to present these different types. So for example if a client came in looking for service A, he would see the home page for service A and if he came in looking for service B he would come across the home page for service B. I know I could have seperate service pages for each service he provides, but I think it would be off putting to come to a home page of a site and see completely unrelated services on one page. I hope I am explaining myself here. As far as I can see the options are:- subdomains for servicea.examplesite.com, serviceb.examplesite.com and a split page (see attachement) where you click which you are interested in (don't like this idea) seperate websites a home page which shows all the services (too confusing) Any advice would be most grateful.
