Followed all on-page rules no listing for target keyword :(
-
Hey guys, long time Moz user, first time forum asker. I recently went all out and tried to create above and beyond blog content, while also making sure to keep it SEO friendly. The page is indexed but does not show anywhere at all for the target keyword. Here is my article URL below.
http://blog.storitz.com/2016/04/75-moving-tips-preparing-packing-beyond/
I checked it on the onpage ranker on MOZ and got a B.
Here are some theories on maybe why it's not ranking at all. It got knocked for keyword stuffing. Although my page has tons of content and the keyword density is at a reasonable rate, I still used the keyword 22 times. Another is my wordpress automatically set my robots tag to "Noodp".
Wanted to get some feedback and see if there is anything you guys might have some insight into before I start making adjustments here. Appreciate it in advanced!

My first thought is that this topic is already well-covered in a competitive vertical, and it's going to take a lot more than on-page factors to get it ranking well. Has the content earned any links? I see it's got 14 social shares, but the top articles for "moving tips" have more than 500, and a few have thousands. What are you bringing to the table with this advice that others aren't already offering? Can you organize the info in a way that's more shareable? Develop a functional checklist that someone who's moving can actually print and use? Can you pitch a news story around it to local media? Interest for "moving tips" seems to really spike in June and July, so you're well-positioned to coordinate with peak seasonal interest right now.

Hey Dan,
Appreciate the quick response. I definitely understand my blog has a low DA compared to the other first page rankings, but it doesn't rank at all even all the way to the last page, which I'm sure my blog has some similar DA to. That's why I'm wondering if it was something I did on page, like too many keywords in the
tags or something like that which prevented my page from being shown at all in the results for the target keyword.
You're definitely right though, and I definitely am working on some promoting to try and get some backlinks. Thanks again for you response!

There's quite a big factor for not ranking yet which is easy to overlook when you've put your heart and soul into what is a decent content page.
Look at the competitors - e.g. if I google 'Moving Tips', you're up against Buzzfeed, Goodhousekeeping and the BBC for starters.
blog.storitz.com DA: 27. Buzzfeed DA 94.
Looking at most of the first page and a bit, they've all got higher Domain and Page Authority. Without having the time to investigate right now, my first suggestion would be to run some of the specific competitor ranking pages/sites through Open Explorer and see where they are getting links from and how it compares to you. Creating great content is a requirement these days, not a complete solution - you still need to encourage traffic and links...

Is it a good idea to publish a list of players in my industry, including competitors?
I am working with an e-commerce site that does mostly B2B sales in a very commoditized industrial product segment in which very few manufacturers sell direct. It's all done through distributors and resellers, like our site. We don't often win on price, but we do win enough SERP battles to get the visitors and provide great customer service, so we have gained a following and we do compete well for some very large orders. We list several thousand products and in a given month, visitors regularly hit over 1,000 different landing pages. While we make most money from relatively few items, most items are sold only once a year, maybe twice. It's a very longtail business, and therefore tough to do a great job optimizing all pages down the tail. So, one thing I'm doing is building out a set of resource pages with common questions, terminology and other useful bits so the site gains more traffic and authority, in the hope of boosting product pages. e.g., an in-depth category definition in the glossary could link to all the items in a category. In addition to adding content that augments product pages, I'd like to create basically a map of the whole industry, including brand name manufacturers, white label manufacturers, distributors, etc. If it's going to be a truly comprehensive list, it should include my competitors. Given that I have never found such a list, it feels like this could be a good page and earn some links. Since it's unlikely much traffic will even find that page, compared to product pages, are there potential pitfalls I should be aware of? I get the feeling if I create a page that others bookmark and visit when hunting for products in our market, we win, even if most visitors to that page won't buy from us. I've been in this industry for four years now, and it's amazing how hard it is to find some companies. Only a handful even think about SEO, since they sell through other channels. Should I link to all my competitors (which is only about a dozen) among hundreds of other industry links?

Renaming web pages vs new web site
I am struggling with renaming a lot of my web pages because I used short form acronyms vs long form keyword page names and now my pages aren't ranking where they should be and used to be. I am weighing a whole new web site or just a massive update with new page names. I also have an old domain that 301's to the new url but the old one outranks the new one. If you search google for cheap tubes the first domain you see is www.cheaptubesinc.com (the 301'd version) when the real url is www.cheaptubes.com. I know I am getting a duplicate content penalty and when moz crawls my site they see 2X the page that I really have. I tried fixing this with canonical tags but it only helped 5 pages according the moz crawls since doing them. Since last July 4th my business has been declining and I know there was an SEO algorithm update last July 4th. I think either method of renaming the web pages with better SEO for instance cheaptubes.com/single-wall-carbon-nanotubes.htm vs cheaptubes.com/swnts.htm as it is currently. In either case, it is still an HTML 2 website done on frontpage and the question I keep asking myself is if I should just scrap the whole site and start over with a more modern format. Should I try to get a new site together with good SEO and publish it quickly vs rename and 301 a bunch of pages? What about the old site? Do I need to track the old page names and 301 them to the new ones? Any help is appreciates Mike

Anyone have a collection or list of spammy websites?
Random I know. I started a fun pet project at www.me-not-spammer.info. Total spam. Totally says it's not spam. Satire and all, something only SEO people will get really. Anyway I want to make a sidebar of other "not spammers" and need to find a bunch of spammy websites. Problem is they don't rank in search engines obviously so I know of only the ones who leave comments on some of my wordpress sites. Anyone have a list of a bunch of them so I can link to them in my blogroll?

How to handle product pages with similar information
We have thousands of product pages with similar information but differentiating variables such as length/width. Example: http://www.savvyboater.com/store/p/2100-Cover-for-V-Hull-Fishing-Boat-with-Side-Console-O-B-14-X-74-.aspx http://www.savvyboater.com/store/p/2101-Cover-for-V-Hull-Fishing-Boat-with-Side-Console-O-B-15-X-76-.aspx http://www.savvyboater.com/store/p/2102-Cover-for-V-Hull-Fishing-Boat-with-Side-Console-O-B-16-X-92-.aspx http://www.savvyboater.com/store/p/2103-Cover-for-V-Hull-Fishing-Boat-with-Side-Console-O-B-17-X-92-.aspx We built individual products instead of grouped products because we recommend specific part numbers for specific make, model, year boats through our finder tool. These pages have recently started showing up in SEOmoz as duplicate content and we are looking for solutions to solve it. We have considered creating a "parent page" that lists all sizes and then using a rel canonical on each individual page to tell google that the parent page is the preferred page. Any thoughts or other ideas on this?

Is there a software that gives keyword density for primary and seconday keywords as content is written ?
What software do you recommend to write web content for a new website and then manage the same as the site gets older. I am looking for a software that can take a list of primary and secondary keywords - give the keyword density and have the ability to create internal links between pages.

Root page not coming up first
Hello. Any idea why site:www.bestprice.gr query doesn't bring the www.bestprice.gr as the first result? Could it be that the site is under a penalty? Thanks.
