No-index or 301 - custom wordpress archives
-
Hi,
We are using custom wordpresss posts to showcase different services we provide, these are then grouped within custom archives. These custom archive pages are our main keyword landing pages and traffic generators (although ranking is fairly average).
It's come to my attention that these custom posts have also been listed in the wordpress standard categories, with an identical title, excerpts and near identical urls as the custom archives. This appears to have been the case for quite a while. We are concerned that this is may causing duplicate content issues and unsure how to proceed.
We have been advised to simply no-index the redundant 'standard' categories but as they have been indexed for some time we are cautious of causing any upset with search engines (although the categories are indexed they are not ranking for any major keywords)
Are we best 301ing the redundant category to the custom archives or using a canonical tags or simply no-indexing the categories like other archive pages?
Any advice is aprreciated
Many thanks
BC

Hi Laura, thank you very much for the advice.
No we don't need users to access the redundant categories, there is no unique content on them. I can arrange to have the 301 put in place
Thanks

Do you want users to be able to access the blog category URLs that were inadvertently created?
If so, use canonical tags. Users will be able to access both URLs, but Google will fold them together in the search index.
If not, use 301-redirects. Users will be redirected to the custom archives.
Either way, Google will eventually remove the blog category URL from the index and any link equity from backlinks will flow to the correct URL.

In one of the previous opened discussions the solution given was: you'd update the server level rule to point directly to the end URL form.

Can service request pages be indexed for a service site?
I think there is no point in indexing service request pages for a service site. And it causes the indexing of the main pages to be done with a delay. Does anyone have experience with indexing service request pages and their results?

IMG TITLE no longer used in Wordpress?
Err, when did this happen? Although you can still enter a Title in the WP image library, when inserting into a post the Title tag is not implemented. Alt text is there OK but not Title. There was a plugin around that restored this basic seo functionality but it's no longer available. I mean - honestly!

Google Indexed = 35, 445 pages, Bing Indexed = 243 pages... Why?
Dear MozSquad, Can anyone check our site and let me know if there's anything super apparent that would cause Bing to treat us like a bum on the street? I recently made some structural changes which really helped with Google, but Bing didn't even budge. It's a lot harder to keep up with all the SEO initiatives I have in mind with it being a small start-up where I'm responsible for planning the entire Internet Marketing campaign, giving constant input on UX and site design, etc on top of 900 other things, so I figured it'd be a good time to use The Moz to help a brother out. Ideas? Domain: homeandgardendesignideas.com (yeah, I know it's a little long =P)

How much juice do you lose in a 301 redirect?
Our site has a number of, shall we say, unoptimized URLs. I would like to change the URLs to be more relevant; if a page is about red widgets, the URL should be www.domain.com/red-widgets.html, right? I'm getting resistance on this, however, based on the belief that you lose something significant when you 301 an old URL to a new one. Now, I know that if you have a long chain of redirects, the spiders will stop following at some point, and that is a huge problem. That wouldn't apply if there's only one step in the chain, however. I've also heard that you lose some link juice in a 301, but I'm unsure how serious that problem actually is. Is it small enough that we'd win out in the long run with better-optimized URLs?
