Is one page with long content better than multiple pages with shorter content?
-
(Note, the site links are from a sandbox site and has very low DA or PA)
If you look at this page, you will see at the bottom a lengthy article detailing all of the properties of the product categories in the links above.

My question is, is there more SEO value in having the one long article in the general product category page, or in breaking up the content and moving the sub-topics as content to the more specific sub-category pages? e.g.

While you may not be able to compete directly with the big dogs immediately, you aren't doing yourself any favors by sticking pages you wish to rank deeper inside your site. Even though the content may be more specifically relevant, the reality is that once you are targeting traffic on a national scale, you are probably looking at your link profile as the defining factor of success rather than your content.
Content still retains power in terms of generating relevancy, but link building is what you need to compete with those long-standing enterprises. In my opinion, content location is secondary in this situation.
A better way to go about this might be to run some competitive analysis on a wide range of keywords to determine:
a) Where are your customers coming from?
b) What are they looking for?
c) Where does your competition rank?
d) Why are they ranking where they do?Once you can answer these questions, you have the ability to make a strategy that will work regardless of where your content is located. Additionally, adding more pages will just make work for your web dev team without any discernible increase in your potential rankings, and will take time. Given the size of your site and the variety of products you carry, this may be an ineffective use of time when you might just be building a significant link profile to a couple of major landing pages.
Whatever you decide, learning why your competition is succeeding needs to be your priority. Then you can decide on a content-driven strategy or a link building strategy.

What if the long, detailed content is for a page for which you cannot possibly win rankings for because huge, long-standing enterprises with high PA and DA already dominate the first few SERPs? Would it not be better to move the details of the content to the specific pages where they apply?
-
I agree with you, Rob. In my personal experience, I realized that long and more detailed content always wins. Rather than creating a short and simple content, it's always better to have a longer and more specific content.

Hi there,
In general, Google is moving towards providing an all-questions-answered approach to content, particularly for sales-oriented (e-comm) sites. The algorithm uses content to determine relevancy using semantic keywords. In your situation, you would probably need to adjust a couple of items to improve your SEO before you develop your content strategy.
For example, your filters include everything from grades to brands, screws, bolts, etc. You might take a look at the sub-categories of products you carry, and determine if you can lump several of them together to make the ranking process a bit simpler. All "Fasteners" on your sidebar could probably be lumped into 1 category page, which would rank more easily than having 7 or 8 different pages, as an example. This may not be a handy way to do things, based on your customer base and the architecture of your site, though.
Your content strategy will also be impacted by your link building strategy. Do you have a lot of time and/or a huge budget of time and money to chase links for individual pages, or do you have to be a bit tighter in your spending on this front? If money isn't an issue, smaller pages may be worthwhile over the long term. However, I have yet to see the project where money and time aren't factors.
SUMMARY
To answer your question more directly, a long piece of content on a single page tends to outrank smaller pieces of content spread across multiple pages. If you can provide your users with everything they need on 1 page, you will outrank your competitors. That being said, you need to balance this approach by ensuring that you are not over-stuffing your pages and driving user experience into the dirt.
My opinion is your first link is a better way to go than the next 3, although I think there are other factors here you might want to spend some time on for full SEO benefits.
Feel free to reach out to me any time and we can put our heads together for a more complete strategy.
Cheers,
Rob

Pages with Temporary Redirects on pages that don't exist!
Hi There Another obvious question to some I hope. I ran my first report using the Moz crawler and I have a bunch of pages with temporary redirects as a medium level issue showing up. Trouble is the pages don't exist so they are being redirected to my custom 404 page. So for example I have a URL in the report being called up from lord only knows where!: www.domain.com/pdf/home.aspx This doesn't exist, I have only 1 home.aspx page and it's in the root directory! but it is giving a temp redirect to my 404 page as I would expect but that then leads to a MOZ error as outlined. So basically you could randomize any url up and it would give this error so I am trying to work out how I deal with it before Google starts to notice or before a competitor starts to throw all kinds at my site generating these errors. Any steering on this would be much appreciated!

MOZ Pro - Page Grader Queries
Greetings! I started a new position last week and the extremely supportive director promised to give me anything I required to make my job easier. Of course, my first port of call was MOZ Pro. Having never used MOZ Pro before, I've just been getting to grips with it, fixing any pressing issues and giving the whole site a general SEO health check. A few fairly major issues have been flagged, which I'm in the process of fixing, and I'm currently putting our main landing pages through the MOZ Page Grader. After a little bit of tinkering, our iPhone 6 cases page has been graded B for the term 'iPhone 6 cases', but I have a few queries/concerns regarding some of the suggested fixes: **Avoid keyword stuffing in document **- The term 'iphone 6 cases' only appears thrice in the body, so it can't be that? The term, however, appears 23 times in the page's img alt tags. Could this be the issue? This is an ecommerce site that sells iPhone 6 cases, so the img alt tags are bound to contain that keyword. Each img alt tag is unique, so I don't really know what I can do here? "Show details for YouSave iPhone 6 0.6mm Clear Gel Case" is the example of the img alt tag of one of the products on that page, surely I can't remove the words 'iPhone 6 case'? Avoid too many internal links - MOZ suggests keeping the internal links to below 100 or, at a minimum, less than 100 links on the main navigation menu. I haven't counted, but I'd guess that page has more than 100 links, but not too many on the navigation menu. To me, this looks like a standard ecommerce page, with links to products and different pages via the top and bottom menus. Would I improve visibility if I reduced the amount of links by, say, reducing the number of products on the page? We currently have it set to 36, but can easily be reduced. Only One Canonical URL - We've put a fix in place for this issue and are just waiting for it to go live. For some reason rel=canonical tags have been duplicated on the majority of the pages. Like I say, this is being remedied, but I just wondered whether a duplicate tag negatively affect the page's visibility? The tags are identical and just point to the page they're on. I think that's about it for now! Thanks in advance and keep up the good work! Cheers, Lewis (Andrew is the name of the director) UPDATE Now I've sorted the rel=canonical issue, the pages are being graded A but still with the first two suggestions above.

Truncate page URLs
We have some pages (for example a contact us form) for which the URL is modified by the CMS depending on the referring page (this helps to put the form submission in context for the sales reps who get the contact submission). The SEOmoz crawler considers each URL a new page -- and so numbers like in diagnostics are all inflated as the same page is listed multiple times (e.g. for too many links) Is there a setting to change what the crawler considers to be the same page? Here are two URLs for the same page that the reports treat as separate pages: http://www.spirent.com/About-Us/Contact_us.aspx?referurl=0F528F4D703D8BB3523738D6373AA8AD http://www.spirent.com/About-Us/Contact_us.aspx?referurl=10ACDA6055244E369395223437FDCF30 The page is actually: http://www.spirent.com/About-Us/Contact_us.aspx Thanks Ken

Duplicate page title
I own a store www.mzube.co.uk and the scam always says that I have duplicate page titles or duplicate page. What happens is thn I may have for example www.mzube.co.uk/allproducts/page1. And if I hve 20 pages all what will change from each page is the number at the end and all the rest of the page name will be the same but really the pages are if different products. So the scans think I have 20 pages the same but I havent Is this a concern as I don't think I can avoid this Hope you can answer

Why am I getting duplicate content errors on same page?
In the SEOmoz tools I am getting multiple errors for duplicate page content and duplicate page titles for one section on my site. When I check to see which page has the duplicate title/content the url listed is exactly the same. All sections are set up the same, so any ideas on why I would be getting duplication errors in just this one section and why they would say the errors are on the same page (when I only have one copy uploaded on the server)?
