Hello folks :)...Is pop-up a good idea for city selection from SEO perspective?
-
I manage an e-commerce website which asks a new user for his/her city by throwing up a pop-up. Please check yourself by visiting www.furlenco.com.
Will this pop-up have any effect on the seo?
-
Hi Furseo
I would say that it has the potential to affect your SEO as you are not able to close the pop up without selecting a city. I do not live in any of the cities listed so I can't navigate your website. Google will penalise sites which it deems are obscured behind an intrusive pop up.
You can read more about interstitial ads and pop ups here: https://webmasters.googleblog.com/2016/08/helping-users-easily-access-content-on.html
If you want to ask then have a pop up that can be closed by the user. Having a sniffer on the site is not always a good idea as servers can be hosted in different locations to the user.
Kind Regards
Nigel

It should not have any effect on SEO. From a UX perspective you may want to see if you can just detect their location instead of interrupting their consumption of your site with a pop up.

Negative SEO
I have got some idiot bombarding my site with spam links, most likely a negative SEO attempt. It started off very small and has ramped up to between five and 10 spam links per day. I think it may be having a slightly negative affect although difficult to tell. I can do a link cleanup, but I'm not sure that is a long term solution, I'm just going have to do it again in a few weeks time. Does anyone have any experience?

Should we change our URLs for SEO benefit?
Hi, I'm currently covering a maternity marketing role at i-escape and one our main objectives is to increase organic traffic to the website. i-escape has a selection of hand-picked boutique hotels, villas, lodges, guesthouses and apartments for people to discover and book. At the moment each hotel page URL follows this structure: https://www.i-escape.com/hotelname We'd like to change this to include some searchable words in the URL dependent on the type of hotel. For example: https://www.i-escape.com/boutique-hotels/hotelname or https://www.i-escape.com/boutique-apartments/hotelname If we do go ahead, we know we need to make sure all old style URLs canonically redirect to the new style. Is having the keyword in the URL important enough for us to change over 1500 URLs on the website? We have quite a high quality links pointing to these hotel pages URLs. Also, will this help us with navigation/user journeys/crawls as there will be a /boutique-hotels/hotelname rather than just /hotelname? Thanks so much all! Clair

SEO url best practices
We're revamping our site architecture and making several services pages that are accessible from one overarching service page. An example would be as follows: Services Student Services Essay editing Essay revision Author Services Book editing Manuscript critique We'll also be putting breadcrumbs throughout the site for easy navigation, however, is it imperative that we build the URLs that deep? For example, could we simply have www.site.com/essay-editing rather than www.site.com/services/students/essay-editing? I prefer the simplicity of the former, but I feel the latter may be more "search robot friendly" and better for SEO. Any advice on this is much appreciated.

SEO impact of overseas data center
Hi there, I currently host a number of sites from data centers in the UK and Hong Kong but now have the need to develop a site specifically for an Australian audience. While our server in Hong Kong can probably provide an acceptably fast service to Australia i'm concerned that its location outside of Australia will negatively affect our local SEO efforts. Am i right to be concerned about this? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks, Dave

But the name servers area all the same. Ex: If we create an article for one client on all 5 blogs, will the name servers be a problem?

Targeting City via Web Server
Here's a question I can't seem to find an answer to. Does web hosting within a targeting city make a different in the engines? For example, a site targeting the Denver area, with web hosting in Denver. Will this boast the ranking or is targeting limited to countries? Thanks!
