Got Spam Score on New Sites without Building Backlinks
-
Hey MOZ Team,
I hope you guys are fine. Actually today I'm reviewing my client site and suddenly saw that their spam score is 39. They don't have too many backlinks. They have few of them and they're not Sammy. Can you Guide me a little bit why these types of things happens. Because the site is almost new.

Hey there! Thanks for writing in!
Spam Score in Links and Link Explorer represents the percentage of sites with similar features we've found to be penalized or banned by Google. Our machine learning model identified 27 common features among the millions of banned or penalized sites in the data we fed it.
You can read more about Spam Score on our Help Hub - including an awesome video that explains how to use the score as well as the factors we use to calculate the score.
Your Spam Score - This does not mean that your site is definitely spammy. The percentage represents a wide variety of potential signals ranging from content concerns to low authority metrics. Since this is based on correlation with penalization, rather than causation, the solution isn't necessarily to change these factors on your site, but it may be worthwhile to consider them. It is best to use this percentage figure to judge the quality of inbound links to your site, giving you a signal to help you determine which of those links needs some further investigation and, perhaps, even removal.
Another site's Spam Score - Again, this doesn't mean that these sites are spammy. This percentage represents a wide variety of potential signals ranging from content concerns to low authority metrics. Since this is just based on correlation with penalization, rather than causation, the solution isn't necessarily to disregard sites or disavow links with higher Spam Scores. Instead, we'd recommend using it as a guide for kick starting investigations. Be sure to check out a site's content and its relevance in linking back to you before disregarding or disavowing.

P.S. Spam score updates quarterly and our recent update was within the last few weeks so that's why you saw a sudden jump
If there is anything else I can help you with please do let me know.

Unsolved Backlink updates
There are a large number of missing backlinks (old) which are not showing on Moz but do show on Ahrefs. Is there a reason for this? Thanks.

How do you distinguish competitor backlinks by categories?
Hi We are trying to produce an outreach list based on the competitor backlinks using SEOmoz link analysis tool (open site explorer). I have few questions related to this: 1. How many backlinks per competitor would be a reasonable starting point? And maybe suggest a strategy on how these outreach list can be managed over time? 2. Is there a way to distinguish what types the backlinks are? So for example, can we have list of backlinks that are categorised under online bloggers, traditional journalist or article/press release/directories? 3. Should we be more concerned about the Page authority or the Domain authority when creating this outreach list? I look forward to your answer, thank you.

How to push negative product review sites down.
Hi Guys, One of my respected clients have some issues with negative product review sites coming up when they search their brand name on google. So for an exmaple, when I search for Company Name on google, the 3rd and 4th results are angry customer reviews. This is harming my clients brand so bad. My questions are, 1. What should I do to push these results down. I am happy to do pretty much ANYTHING to push these sites down. 2. I'm also thinking of doing a blog for this client for SEO purposes and wondering the pros and cons of having the blog as a subdomain vs subfolder. Which will help me to again, push the negative site links down. Thanks

Increasing Domain Authority scores
Ok, a bit of a 'how long is a piece of string' type question this... Looking for the opinions of wiser users than myself in trying to work out how long is a realistic target for getting my domain authority somewhere near that of my competitors. I have been tracking my domain and three competitors in the campaign tool for a few months and they seem to average about 0.5 increase a month in their DA - they are averaging around 65 DA each. My site is currently DA 32, has increased from 21 in 5 months. Is this a decent rate of increase? How long would people expect it to take to increase a domain by 10, 20 etc? I know there are too many variables in the world of seo for a complete 'do this and this will happen' answer, but it's good to have a DA goal to work to, it acts as a good motivator for staff, especially when you begin to close in on competitors. Thanks, Carl

DA or PA for link building strenght
Hello, We're doing link building for nlpca(dot)com with Open Site Explorer. 90% of the sites found that we're targeting have NLP resource sections that will probably list our site because we are an authority. My Excel Spreadsheet has the following values: Backlink Holder Site Name Site URL Site Type Tactic PA Ease (1-5) Estimated Value (1-5) Priority (Ease x Est. Value) Contact Info -- I'm only interested in strong sites - sites that will be around for the long haul, and I'm stopping aquiring sites that their resource section has a PA lower than 20. Should I be incorporating DA in some way as well? What other feedback do you have for me?

Is Open Site Explorer ignoring 301 redirects now?
I just recently saw a huge decline in the page rank of a specific page on my site. When I investigated a bit further I noticed that the drop in page rank looks like it is due to the fact that most of the links to the page come through 301 re-directs from an old page. I know you just made a change to Open Site Explorer. Did you change the way that you are treating 301 re-directs? Here is the new page: http://www.justjen.com/shop/big-sister-tshirts.htm Here is the old page: http://www.justjen.com/shop/bigsister-tshirts.htm Up until the last couple of days, the new page was showing the links from the old page in your cache, but as of today, the new page is only showing the links that go to it, not the links to the old page that is re-directed to it. If there was a change recently, was this intentional (trying to replicate the search engines better) or is it an oversight or database anomaly?
