How important to conversions is proper English on a website?
-
Many websites - especially those done in foreign countries by non-native English speakers - have many grammatical and idiomatic errors in the English copy. How important is that to conversions (actually convincing the customer to buy, etc.) Is the poor English a turn-off, a cause for distrust or discomfort - or do people not care?
I'd be interested to hear people's personal opinions (the more the merrier) and if anyone has a more global perspective backed by research, testing, etc - that would be great,
Thanks in advance!

Hmm... all depends on your definition of "conversion". On several sites, a "conversion" is farming visitors off as quickly as possible to another site/partner; and sometimes having an ugly site, with poor grammar and a single link leads to a user leaving the site through the link out of sheer desperation... and there's your conversion.
If you're talking directly about selling as a conversion though, then that's a completely different matter. Many users won't part with their money on a site where the "service quality" is implied to be inferior... as it is when communication (a part of service) breaks down.

It's a matter of trust - I wouldn't buy from a site spelling mistakes (or any one of a number of problems; bad design, technical errors, broken links, no SSL, etc, etc)
In order to pull out my wallet I need to trust the people running the site are competent enough to keep my info safe, and deliver the product. Unfortunately, a simple spelling mistake in a conspicuous place would be enough to put me off.
Rightly or wrongly, I think there is an inherent distrust of foreign websites - they are tainted by stories of scammers, spammers and organised crime...
..so YES, use a spell checker and check the grammar too!

I haven't seen much in the way of data on this. Since many usability studies and A/B tests mean that a site has solid investment, it's rare to see someone test "bad grammar" vs. "good grammar". Plus, if you've invested in good grammar enough to have a "B" version, then why not just use it. So, practically, you just don't see this in the research very much.
I agree with GNC that it's primarily a trust issue. Are you going to give your credit cart to a company with dozens of typos, spelling mistakes, and bits of bad grammar? If they offshored their copy for bargain basement prices, is that where you want to put you money?
I saw a good international SEO talk once about the importance of writing copy for your target audience and NOT just translating. So much is idiomatic that it's easy to lose important details in translation. When your competitor is a click away and especially if you're an unknown quantity (and not a big brand), these details can matter quite a bit.

Hi Debi:
This is strictly my opinion, not backed up by any research, but if you have an ecommerce site geared towards sales in English speaking countries, you want to get rid of any barrier in front of your customer. Poor grammar would definitely be a barrier.
I were a prospective customer I would be asking myself, will they get the order correct? If I have a problem with the order will I be able to communicate it easily with them or will there be a language barrier?
I think it would be an important trust issue.
For that matter, I think poor grammar negatively affects native English sites.

Suggestions to Improve Worst Conversion Form Ever Designed?
My commercial real estate web site has about the worst conversion form ever designed (http://www.nyc-officespace-leader.com/visitor-details). The form appears whenever a visitor does a property search. If they do not release their phone number and email address they don't get results. The form only gets completed 25% of the time and often the contact details are wrong. The visitors either exit the site at that page or go to the listing or neighborhood pages to view listings without doing a filtered search. In an attempt to increase conversions we are softening the form and not making completion mandatory. After entering an inquiry the visitor will be shown three property listings before the form pops up, The idea being that once they have seen product they will be more inclined to release contact info. Also, the form will appear once they have viewed three listings anywhere on the site, not just for search results. Unlike the existing conversion form (http://www.nyc-officespace-leader.com/visitor-details) we are trying to keep the text very concise. The new form will be Java script rather than a URL. Can anyone offer some ideas on how to make the text of these new forms more enticing? The forms are listed below. We will probably show the first one after the visitor views 3 listings and the variation of it after the visitor views another 3 listings. ** FORM #1** Quit wasting time searching for listings. (watch icon) Call me to discuss available space. Yes No --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- FORM #2 Don’t search for listings, we will do it for you. We have off market listings that no one knows about. Contact us now about off market listings. Yes No ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Thanks, Alan

Is it Easier to rank High Authority Websites?
I have been doing SEO for several years and I know LOTS of things play into factor when it comes to rankings, but what's your thoughts on ranking pages on a high authority websites vs a fairly new website? I'm thinking about buying an old domain and building links to it, rather than continuing with my fairly new domain. Do you think I have a better chance taking this route??

Google Product Ads - Improving our Cost Per Conversion?
Hi all, We have been running Google Product Ads (paid for) ever since it began in the UK. We are still struggling to get to grips with the best way to make it worthwhile for us. Our data for the last 14 days:
Conversion Rate Optimization | | complete_outdoors
Clicks: 1827
Impressions: 65789
CTR: 2.78%
Average CPC: £0.22
Cost Per Conversion: £15.13 We've added some auto targets for our most popular brands, with a higher CPC than "all products". We've also added negative keywords so we only come up with relevant searches. Basically, what we'd like to know is: how we can best set-up our product ads to reduce our Cost Per Conversion (I guess everyone would like to do that!), as it is barely worth us using it currently. If you require any further data to help answer my question, please ask. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.0 -
What happens when i import analytics conversions into adwords if I already have conversions set up?
Hey everyone, I have a question. We already have conversion tracking set up for our landing pages, however Adwords has the option to import goals from anaytics, one of which is for the landing pages. What will happen if I do? Will it erase all the conversion data I already have? Will it mess things up? Or am I not understanding this correctly... Any help would be appreciated 🙂

Does adding a well scripted and produced video help significantly in conversions from visits to my divorce lawyer website to calls for my services?
Should the addition of well scripted and produced video to my divorce lawyer website increase my conversions and, if so, to what extent?

Create better conversion at checkout?
I'm getting extremely poor conversion rates at checkout..would like to hear some ideas to increase checkout. Last month we had 60 users who added to cart, and only 7 who converted. We offer merchant CC, PayPal, and GCO, so I don't believe payment options is the reason for the exit. Any ideas?

Canonical to another website?
I've recently noticed in my adwords campaigns that using exact match domains improves my quality scores so I've been snatching up all kinds of domains which include different keywords. On these new sites (which I only use to bring down my CPC) I've been tossing up a landing page, scraping some content form my main site and direct a canonical tag to my organic site so google doesnt penalize me for duplcant content. It is ok to use a canonicle to an outside website and Is there any precautions when doing this? I just want to be sure I'm not hurting my main site where we rank well organicly on and I was also wondering if any of these sub sites which also have links to my main site carry any vaue. Appreciate any feedback! -Cliff
