Are xml sitemaps still in use today?
-
Hi,
Are you still using XML sitemaps today? If yes, does it bring any benefit to your website like faster indexing of webpages or better rankings? Are you using special features like video sitemaps or sitemap index files?
Best regards,
Tobias

Hey Jason,
I wrote a tool myself years ago (phpSitemapNG in 2005) but haven't used, supported or further developed it since than.
What would be your requirements for the perfect sitemaps tool?
Tobias
-
No they don't.
-
I generate them manually, havent really found a tool that does it well, if you find one though be sure to let me know
-
Hi Jason,
This sounds interesting. How do you generate the video sitemaps file - manually or by a tool?
Thanks for your feedback and input,
Tobias -
Hi Jenny,
Thanks for your input. I forgot about the seminar. I even registered but wasn't online when the webinar started.

Thanks a lot for the link.

Thanks for your feedback. Do the priority and the other optional values of the sitemaps file have any impact?

In practice I have found that having a video sitemap for a group that use videos to go along with their products really helped get the videos indexed very quickly. I also feel like when we did a huge domain restructure the sitemap helped the search engines (Bing! in particular) index the pages at a much quicker pace.

Hi Tobias,
yes they are in use and useful, too
Here is the link to the webinar Jenny mentioned http://www.seomoz.org/dp/pro-webinar-jan-2011-value-from-xml-sitemaps

Tobias, I Video sitemaps to get videos findable. You can write your own XML site map here is the Google webmaster page http://www.google.com/support/webmasters/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=80471
or you can use Brightcove, Sorenson, etc.

There was just a webinar on sitemaps. Maybe that can help you Sorry I'm too new to give a good answer!

Linking back to the homepage im trying to rank - Using exact match anchor? Linking from footer?
Hello, Our site is an basically advertisements / listings website. Structure is as following <last 200="" adds=""> (homepage trying to rank) < category 1 > < category 1 > < category 1 > < category 1 > < category 1 ></last> My question - each of the categories links back within the menu back to homepage. The link text currently is last 200 adds. Can i use exact match anchor? Or should i use just last 200 ads? The issue is that one of my categorys (category 1) has already the exact match anchor im trying to rank for. So i can not use the same to link back to homepage. Im worried that google does not see any exact keyword anchor texts back to homepage hence will rank my homepage with lower strenght for that keyword . Im also worried that the category 1 page might now compete with the main homepage for this word (even tho at the moment category itself does not rank for this keyword) Can i link from footer back to homepage with an alternative keyword then to give some "context" to google more? Would this be spamming?

Can you use the canonical tag and rel=next and rel=prev on category pages.
We have a conflict of information between our web developers and our SEO company. We are an on-line retail company hence we have a fair number of different categories. Our site is set up with the rel=next and rel=prev tags. Our SEO company have asked us to implement canonical links on our category pages and leave the rel=next and rel=prev tags as they are. Our web developers are saying by doing this we are asking Google to ignore all of our products on all of the pages except page 1 which would mean Google would not index a lot of our products. I have looked at a few articles but I am struggling to understand which way to go. Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Sitemap for webshop?
Had a client today who contacted me regarding having no sitemap on his webshop (with about 2000 products). He told me that his design company, who had made his webshop, adviced him against putting up a site since it would be giving google to much information at once, hence making it stop visiting his webshop as much? Well my first through was -okay this must be some kind of joke.

Should H1s be used in the logo? If they are and it is dynamic on each page to relate to the page content, is this detrimental to the site rather than having it in the page content?
On some sites, the H1 is contained within the logo and remains consistent throughout the site (i.e. the company name is in the of the logo). If the h1 in a logo is dynamic for each page (i.e. on the homepage it is company name - homepage) is this better or worse to have it changed out on the logo rather than having it in the page content?

Using categories in Permalinks
I am looking at updating my WP Permalink structure and wanted to know if I should continue to include the category after my domain as in www.maximphotostudio.net/weddings/6081/columbus_wedding_photography/ or maybe www.maximphotostudio.net/6081/columbus_wedding_photography and www.maximphotostudio.net/6082/dayton_wedding_photography. Any help is appreciated.
