Link building techniques

Hi there guys,
2011 will not doubt bring new changes to how Google look at links, I heard that there have been complaints because a lot of poor websites rank really high because of the vast amount of links they have acquired!
Can any one please provide me some pointers for sucesful white hat link building tips? I would be very grateful!!

Google changed it's algorithm recently to devalue low quality web sites. "content farms".
This may or may not affect link directories, but I know that Google does devalue some links from directories as spam.
Someone may step in and correct me if I'm wrong.

The best tip I can give is to go out and be proactive.
Sure, there are directories out there, but with the recent Farmer update, you have to be careful where you tread with those.
Contact webmasters, find common ground and ask for links. Also, blog linkable content that provides information.

Inbound link is follow link but we put no follow link back - is it beneficial for rankings?
Dear Moz Community, We are operating in a niche market, where there are not so many content marketing options. What we are left with are link exchanging with relevant sites that are on the same topic but to not directly compete with us. Now we know that if we link back to site A and site a links back to us - for google this is not a very good link. But, some of the sites we are exchanging links with, do not know the term follow vs no follow links. My question - if your link is to site A is a no follow link but they give us a follow link - does it mean thats a better option than a follow vs follow. Thanks for help!

Hi, If i hire a SEO company, what kind of links they will build for me. If anyone own a seo company can you let me know.My question is if i create a new website, what kind of link building techniques should i use other than, articles, press releases, social bookmarking, directories. Does anyone know of any software that will build links if I enter the URL in? I know this sounds silly but I had to ask... I know ontolo is good to discover which links you need based on a key word and I know the SEOmoz tools do the same.
