The primary search keywords for our news release network have dropped like a rock in Google... we are not sure why.
-
Hi,
On April 11th, a month after the farmer update was released for U.S. users of Google, the primary keywords for ALL our sites significantly dropped in Google. I have some ideas why, but I wanted to get some second opinions also.
First off, I did some research if Google did anything on the 11th of April... they did. They implemented the farmer update internationally, but that does not explain why our ranks did not drop in March for U.S. Google users... unless they rolled out their update based on what site the domain is registered in... in our case, Canada.
The primary news release site is www.hotelnewsresource.com, but we have many running on the same server. EG. www.restaurantnewsresource.com, www.travelindustrywire.com and many more.
We were number 1 or had top ranks for terms like ¨Hotel News¨, ¨Hotel Industry¨, ¨Hotel Financing¨, ¨Hotel Jobs¨, ¨Hotels for Sale¨, etc... and now, for most of these we have dropped in a big way.
It seems that Google has issued a penalty for every internal page we link to.
Couple obvious issues with the current template we use... too many links, and we intend to change that asap, but it has never been a problem before. The domain hotelnewsresource.com is 10 years old and still holds a page rank of 6.
Secondly, the way our news system works, it´s possible to access an article from any domain in the network. E.G. I can read an article that was assigned to www.hotelnewsresource.com on www.restaurantnewsresource.com... we don´t post links to the irrelevant domain, but it does sometimes get indexed. So, we are going to implement the Google source meta tag option.
The bottom line is that I think we put too much faith in the maturity of the domain... thinking that may protect us... not the case and it´s now a big mess.
Any insight you can offer would be greatly appreciated. Do you think it was farmer or possibly something else?
Thanks,
Jarrett

I have a client who saw big drops beginning the 11th even though they're U.S. based. A portion of their visits come from international sources. We're still in evaluation mode though because the site had no significant drops on the initial Panda update here in the U.S.
Preliminary checks of other data show it might partially be a Panda issue, but not completely - oddly enough beginning on the 11th they also had a serious lag time in content loading due to advertiser scripts, which I'm thinking is a big factor as well.
Something that I have been speculating on with several new clients is the gradual degradation concept. My theory is many of their links coming from other sites that got hit has caused a rolling drop effect. Since none of my longer term clients have seen any significant drop though it's a more difficult assessment.

Did you see any cases where the Panda update went live, but it did not impact a given site till later on... like 30 days plus, which is our case? I do see a downward trend in analytics starting the day Panda was implemented, but it was´t until the 11th of April did it really drop.

That's your biggest challenge - to find the best ways to monetize enough to justify the editorial uniqueness. Yet it's that uniqueness that will ultimately bring you back. Be aware though - I have yet to hear of a single site that's bounced back significantly. All the sites I've audited that were hit by the Panda update require tremendous changes, especially in the unique content aspect, and in building quality links to category level and deep internal pages.

Thanks Alan,
Yes, the number of ads is another issue I intend to address... that will be a tough one to overcome.
Yes, it appears that every site hosted on our server has suffered... even the non related news websites like www.2casarealty.com, which does not have any news stories posted on, but is in the same IP range as the news sites and does have links to it from the news websites.
I would say 50% of the paid releases sent to us are first distributed in our network and then filtered down to other relevant websites... some of whom use widgets to link back to the full story, others use our API and then there are the content scrapers of course.
We have around 50 niche news release sites in our network as well as a number of websites we have launched to further monetize our business... E.G. hospitalityexpos.com, hotelsupplyresource.com
Yes, I full intend to implement that source meta tag and assign credit to the most appropriate site in out network. Not sure what to do with stories that have come to us after the customer posted on their site or another news release network first. I suppose the safest method is to find out where it was posted first and give them credit.
I was thinking we could balance the daily submissions with more editorial content that is written by us. That will help I´m sure.
Part of the problem is the business model itself... paid news release submissions haven´t necessarily hit our service first.

There are potentially several other factors as well, beyond what you've already pointed to yourself.
Panda/Farmer issued in a new era where many old "rules" were tossed by the wayside. Some of these were already questionable, as the seedlings of Panda were planted with last year's May Day update. if any single site in your network saw significant drops but not the others, it might well have been something else that caused it. Given the breadth and severity, this clearly does sound like Panda.
Taking a brief look at some of your content, site structure and duplicate content issues gives me even more confidence that's the cause.
Example 1: Duplicate content severity
I randomly picked one article and searched Google. Found a dozen sites where the same article shows up, including the site that's currently #1 in organic rankings in my result, which is the actual author's own site (Daniel Edward Craig). http://www.google.com/search?q=In+this+post+I+discuss+how+newly+available+reputation+metrics+are+paving+the+way+for+the+integration+of+the+online+reputation+management+and+revenue+m&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a
How many sites are in your network where you share the content? So that begs the question - do you intend to find a way to give credit to the original news source for articles shared across sites? That's a big recommendation.
Obviously just this factor alone shouldn't necessarily cause bottoming out. News articles from major wire services routinely spread across the net in massive numbers every day.
Yet it's just one indicator to now consider. Especially when considering other major factors. Like the sheer volume of ads on pages. Too many ads is a big factor now. Amount of content that's unique to each site is a big part of the puzzle. If most of the content is duplicated across all sites, what makes each site uniquely valuable?
I could go on, but those are some high level areas for consideration.

Website Form Doesn't Work for Visitors from Google Search App
I've got a strange issue where if visitor is viewing a website from within the Google Search App, the app doesn't seem to be able to handle online forms. The form relies users on entering data, which is then POSTed to an external booking engine site. Normally this works fine, except when Google Search App is acting as the browser, the post payload is empty and the URL breaks. We're a bit stumped as to how to move forward. So far the only lead is that Android users can override having the app behave as a browser - but doesn't seem like iOS users can. Any additional ideas/tips are welcome here - thanks. 🙂

Fetch as Google not showing Waypoints.js on scroll animation
So I noticed that my main content underneath 4 reasons to choose LED Habitats did not show up in Fetch as Google as well as a few other sections. The site being brand new, so I'm not sure how this will be indexed. What happens is, as the user scrolls the content is brought in using Waypoints and Animate.css which offers an engaging yet simple user experience. I'm just afraid that If the content doesn't show up in "Fetch as Google" in webmaster tools that this content will never be found / indexed by Google. There are thousands of sites that use this library, I'm just curious what I'm doing wrong.. or what I can do. Is there a way for me to keep the simple animations but keep Google Happy at the same time? I took a screen shot of "Fetch as Google" and you can see blatant missing sections which are the sections animated by the waypoints library. Thanks for listening! Robert ZqgLWHi

Dealing with the impending Google mobile compliance update - is bMobilized any good as a temporary measure?
We've been caught a bit off guard with the upcoming Google mobile compliance issue and received the warnings in webmasters about fixing mobile usability issues. It will still be some time before we can have the site re-coded as responsive. I have stumbled upon a converter tool (which turns any site into one that's mobile friendly) called bMobilized, which essentially turns your site into one that's mobile friendly. Have you used bMobilized? Is it a safe idea to use this service temporarily until our new responsive site is ready in a few months? Do you have any suggestions for temporarily getting around the mobile compliance issue while our new responsive site is being built? Thanks

Is there an issue if we show our old mobile site to Google & new site to users
Hi, We have our existing mobile site that contains interlinking in footer & content and new mobile site that does not have interlinking. We will show existing mobile site to google crawler & new mobile site to users. Will this be taken as black hat by Google. The mobile site & desktop site will have same url across devices & browsers. Regards

Site is getting crushed by spam traffic and Google Webmaster Tools giving crawl warnings. Also...
Currently hosting a site I'm planning on moving to a new server ASAP, 301 redirecting and have a domain that has nice authority and very old. On the current site I need to clean up the blog. I have a few questions actually.... 1. I'd like to remove most of the blog articles as I want the new site to be very high quality, but isn't it dangerous to do a 301 redirect to the same page for all these articles? 2. I want to focus on the new site as the current site has too many issues but still managing to hang in their. is highly outdated yet I don't want to spend a ton of time on the site before the 301 redirect. With the Pigeon and Panda 4.0 rumors being released soon, I want to get the new site completed ASAP. Do you think it's better if I fix the 3. Would removing cloudflare make things better or worse with the crashing of my site due to high traffic (mainly spam on the blog.) 4. My best article by far is outdated, but should I waste time updating it before redirecting or should I just get the new site going? I did way too many guest posts thinking content is king, but at least checked the outgoing links Domain Auth, Page Auth, and MozTrust in OSE, but first off I'm going to remove a page that mentions I'm looking for guest bloggers. I tried to keep the posts relevant but at the time you could get away with 5. Anything I can do to slow down these spammers on Wordpress? I noticed most of them are checking for vulnerabilities but I'm keeping it up to date, have caching setup. Thanks!

Google Malware Message
*Update 9/19/2013 So I finally have more details the site is a joomla site and is hosted on godaddy. The weird thing is the malware message only appears when browsing the site in chrome it comes up fine in internet explorer any specific reason why that would be? Also we noticed that on the joomla template there were about 6 scripts after the tag that were adult site related and have nothing to do with our site, any ideas? I appreciate all/any suggestions and or advice. Thank You. I had a client recently pay about $300 for a site design that she hosted on go daddy. This is the site www.shirianfabric.com can anyone tell me why this would happen its only been live for about three months and out of no where we get this message? My client is thinking maybe the designer inserted some kind of malicious code?as he is now charging a couple hundred to fix the issue. Is there any way to look further into this? Im not sure a webmasters account was ever set up for this site so any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Rankings Dropped After Redesign
Hi, I've recently redesigned our website with the main changes being sidebar changes and source ordering (making the main content appear before the sidebars). No URL changes have been made. A few days after making these changes our positions dropped heavily and have been dropping ever since. It's been a week and a half now and traffic is down by around 40%. Google has the new changes cached. Do people feel this just a temporary drop and will we rankings to go back at least or should we revert to the old structure? Website: http://www.diyorgasms.co.uk (NSFW) Thanks

Switched From Wordpress, Traffic Dropped In Half
Hello, Thank you for taking a look at my issue. My site: http://www.getrightmusic.com A month ago, I switched from Wordpress to ExpressionEngine. The reason being I wanted a more powerful membership functionality with media uploading. After I switched, my traffic basically dropped in half. I was averaging around 4-6,000 unique visitors per day and now I am at about 2,000 per day. I resubmitted a new sitemap to Google webmasters. I also set up 301 redirects on my top 80 urls that were ranking well and driving traffic in Google. Not only did Google kick me off of my top spots in the SERP's, but I no longer get indexed as quickly as I used to. With the old Wordpress site I would get url's indexed within minutes. Now they aren't even getting indexed really at all. Is this a normal occurrence when switching site designs and systems? Do you think Google will just take a little time before they give me back some respect? Is there anything I should be doing to get back to ranking and getting indexed faster? Thanks for any help or any insight you may have. Jesse
