Link Building Features/Tutorials
-
I am previewing this software and am getting a little lost in its features. I am really looking for something that will help me identify link prospects, filter out the low-authority domains, and organize this information into an actionable list. Can anyone point me to resources (tutorials, etc.) on how to do that with this software? Which tools should I be using and how can I use them to reach these goals?

Thanks for the responses. Is there a way to run queries on OSE? I understand how to use OSE to check out competitors links, but what if I want to do a ["submit site" + keyword] type inquiry. Those are the result that I need help sorting through. Can this be done through OSE?
-
Hi Jack. My experience has been that aside from social signals and high value directory submissions, your primary method will be to use Open Site Explorer to reverse engineer the backlinks of your competitors. You can download the OSE results as an Excel spreadsheet and manipulate them there if you have some familiarity with Excel.

Open Site Explorer. It shows you everything you need to know to work out which links are good and which aren't that your competition have.

Thanks for the responses. I've used those tools, and the don't seem to have the functionality I am looking for. For example, the link finder will help me generate a bunch of queries to identify sites that might allow me to submit my url. But how do I separate the wheat from the chaff? Ideally, I would like to be able to export these results to a spreadsheet, filter out those that aren't worth considering, and focus my attention on the ones that are most likely to actually benefit my site.
I could generate the queries myself. What I need is something to help me turn this into an actionable list of high value prospects. I was hoping that SEOmoz software would help me do this, and that's really what I am looking for from this preview. Have I picked the wrong toolset? Any other recommendations?

Which software? The SEOmoz tools?

Check out the following resources:
Also, set up a campaign and request a custom crawl (just search custom crawl) - this will bring up any issues on your website which may potentially be holding you back.
Check out your competitors on Linkscape/Open Site Explorer - the links are ordered by worth - so the ones at the top are the ones you should be chasing

Then read some of the blogs on the Daily Blog to get up to speed with how to use some of the tools to better effect, but as I said, check out the campaign area first..

Zen and the art of link building.
If I understood correctly MozTrust measure the trust of a website, so getting a backlink from a website with a high MozTrust is generally better than getting a backlink from a website with a lower MozTrust, correct? I also saw a loose correlation between MozTrust and Majestic TrustFlow; in general if I take a list of websites and I order them by MozTrust or TrustFlow I get a somehow similar list, even if there's jumps here and there and the positions are not always the same. This reinforce my belief is better to have backlinks from website with high MozTrust (and high TrustFlow). I also understood Domain Authority is, instead, a measure of the potential ranking of a website. So, the two are measuring things which are different, MozTrust is telling you how good it is to get a link from a certain website, DA is telling you how much probable it is to rank well for that website. While hunting for backlinks and trying to figure out what is the best place to get one, I also use a third metric, the number of TOP20 positions for the website. I am doing this on a pure empirical basis, because in my little experience I saw much better results with backlinks when the the linking domain had a lot of positions in TOP20. If I got everything correctly, I would expect a correlation between all these factors. If a website has a high DA I would expect it to rank well and have a lot of TOP20 positions, also backlinks from that website should be worth something. But then... I have found a bunch of websites with a high DA, like 40/50/60, with incredibly small amount of TOP20 positions, like 5 or 10 or 50, and with a respectable MozTrust. And also I saw excellent results with backlinks from websites with 50k TOP20 position and a low DA and a low MozTrust and negligible results with backlinks from websites with a high DA/MozTrust but little or none TOP20 positions. What is your experience? As anyone an explanation of why DA/MozTrust/TrustFlow doesn't match with the count of SERP top postions? Am I getting too geeky?

Networking sites / paid links
A national networking company charges its members, say, a few of hundred pounds to become part of their network, which involves offline networking events and online in forums and a directory. All the links of the directory and forum sigs etc are all do-follow. While it's not just a directory, how beneficial a link is this likely to be? The site itself has a DA of 60 and a PR rank of 4. 1k likes on their cnnected FB page and 21 likes on the G+. At the networking meetings they tell new recruits that being a member gives them a very valuable backlink and everytime they participate in the forums they get another do follow backlink. Ive checked and they are dofollow. Is this likely to be a great value link?

Http://domainame/brooklyn or http://domainame/brooklyn.html; is there a difference?
I understand that for SEO purposes you would use a 301 redirect, form either www. or no www., because SE's see them as two distinct sites and you are splitting your links; do SE's see extentions .html as two (2) sites also? for example: http://domainname/brooklyn or http://domainame/brooklyn.html. Are the search engines also treating them as two (2) sites? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated, Thanks, James

Hiring a Company for Link Building
I am considering hiring a company to help develop link building for our websites. It is just too time intensive for me and I would like someone with experience to do it. So. . .what are the things I should ask of this company to make sure they know what they are doing and will do it in an ethical manner? What are some things I should make sure that they will NOT do with the links? Any guidance you have on what I should tell the company would be helpful.
