Why are these sites so high with poor relevant links...
-
Hello,
Keyword: TV Stands.
I have been researching competitors for a client and we seem to be unable to understand why certains pages are ranking on page 1 of Google UK for keyword TV Stands.
eg:
http://www.furnitureinfashion.net/plasma-TV-stand.html (Google UK 8 - TV Stands)
http://direct.tesco.com/q/N.1999542/Nr.99.aspx (Google UK 9 - TV Stands)
The furniture in fashion has links from sites like: http://www.ummah.com/forum/ and http://www.muslimco.com/ which is totaly irrelevant to the site.
Any ideas on other things as the tesco.com site does not have direct links to it.
Cheers

Really Nice post, I have got a lot of information from your blog.
-
I suspect so, have to await the OP's reply I guess!
Either that, or yahoo site explorer, which does show only a three figure number of backlinks too I think.
DigiJolt, what did you use to do your backlink check?
-
Ah... I'm guessing the original search was done using the link: operator from within Google then?
-
I took the liberty of running a report on that URL for you (majestico tool) and found: 73,704 backlinks from 349 referring domains to that URL.
I found 68,727 backlinks with the anchor: tv stands
If you want an Excel file of the backlinsk I found, let me know where to send it, and I will fire it over to you, if that helps. (I suggest NOT posting your email in public view though!)
So I think that may have something to do with it!
-
Well, not really enough of them to be spammy... could be the guys cousin's site or something... but yeah they're not relevant and if he had a bunch more like that I'd definitely be thinking spam alert
-
I'm glad there is nothing obvious! ... You agree the links are spammy?
-
The Tesco page might not but the domain will have, and then internal links will pass link juice to a page... if the domain is strong enough then it's no wonder.
No idea about the furniture fashion site though.
Could be a whole bunch of other stuff helping them out, domain age, etc... or maybe loads of the current competition is spammy.

Dodgy links across top ranking sites in a certain industry - Could this be negative link building?
Hi, I've noticed repeated low value / high spam backlinks directing to a site that I manage, and despite disavowing, new links showing similar anchor text keep appearing. See sample in the table below: <colgroup><col width="514"> <col width="407"> <col width="364"></colgroup>

Nofollow for reciprocal links?
Hi, We have reciprocal links with our business partners. Their websites have been listed on our website with "nofollow" links and they link to our website with "nofollow" or "dofollow" links. Is this wrong having reciprocal links? And if they are our partners, "nofollow" or "dofollow" is better? I don't think there will be anymore link juice loss with dofollow links from our website?

Internal Links to Ecommerce Category Pages
Hello, I read a while back, and I can't find it now, that you want to add internal links to your main category pages. Does that still apply? If so, for a small site (100 products) what is recommended? Thanks

Where Is This Link Coming From?
According to Moz Analytics we have a link coming from here: http://www.grayshadowfinancial.com/ The anchor text is earthquake prone map. I can't find the link, but if I cntrl+f "earthquake prone map" it shows in the find box, even though I can't see it. I'm guessing this is some spam tactic and they are hiding this with their CSS? Is there anyway I could see it? Best, Ruben

Has my site been penalized by google
Hi all I have noticed a sudden drop in rankings for most of my keywords on kerryblu ,co,uk and was thinking the site may have been manually penalized by google. I have not received any notification of this in webmaster tools but can't think of any other reason for the loss of rankings. I have searched the web for info on this but can't find a definite answer. Is there any way of knowing for sure. At the time of the crash the only real change I made was adding google adsense to my blog. Could this be responsible. Thanks for looking.

What to do when majority of results have shady links?
So I am doing my back link research for the hosting industry and I am running across two different types of link schemes that make it hard to compete with straight white hat techniques. I am determined to keep our efforts white hat to retain long term value, but at the same time I am constantly tempted to slowly add links in the more grey ways. So here are some of the common practices I see a lot of (e.g. 8 of the top 10 sites for top terms use these). Link Buying/Article Links - You know this one well, their link profile has a 10:1 ratio of keyword links compared to brand name links, and the majority of those keyword links are on nonsensical blogs, or on related "tech" sites but obviously labeled as paid links. - I don't like this much, and have even reported some of these. "Hosted by" - So the majority of hosting companies out there have pre-built collections of templates for wordpress, joomla, and other CMS systems, and they have taken the extra step of putting "Server Hosting by XXXXXX" in the footer of those templates. This leads to thousands of small sites being hosted with the keyword backlinks. While I understand this, at the same time I would hope they wouldn't get credit for links all coming back from IPs that they own. While they aren't creating these sites they know the majority of users won't change the template (or know how to). Lastly there are some "Link to us and get discounts" programs going on with customers as well. So, seeing the linking setup this way, would you try to report each instance you see to Google? If so do you think they would really change anything considering how rampant it is among the results? Lets hear some opinions! In the mean time I am going to go work on my awesome content, press releases, and cross-company promotional campaigns ;).
