CNAME instead of A-record: seo problem?
-
Our supplier of a hosted CMS is hosting a few hundred website on his server. For every domainname pointing to a website we need to use the same IP-adres in the DNS A-record. They are now asking us to delete de A-record for all the websites and add a CNAME record. So they can send the traffic via a company like Versign in case of a DDOS attack.
A lot of the websites rank well. Will there be a SEO problem when we start using the CNAME's instead of the A-records?
Thanks, Olaf

If i m not mistaken #1 will apply. it will fully resolve

Thanks for helping
Do you mean that everything is happening on the DNS server and that Google/ requester/ browser won't see the proces from CNAME to A-record- to IP-address.
What I mean is:
-
Is the DNS server fully resolving the request at once (from CNAME to A-record to Ip-adres) or
-
is it a two step proces (lookup from CNAME to A-record, then another lookup from A-record to Ip-address by the requester).
In case 2 the requester can see that it's a CNAME construction because there are two steps.

Olaf,
I dont think i understood your reply,
how he asks for a domain name?
your cname will be for example abc.olaf.com
-
"Search engines will never know if you were using A- or a CName record"
But if the Google bot's asks for a domainname and they will receive a domainname (the CNAME domain) they can understand it's a CNAME. Otherwise they would receive an IP-adres.

Am pretty sure, There will be no problems if you are using either of them.
Search engines will never know if you were using A- or a CName record.
On quick check you need to know, is to have the company make sure that the search engines are not accessible to your content on their host (duplicate). (better to use HTTP auth)

Magento Core_URL_Rewrite Problems
Hi Everyone, We are currently caught between a rock and a hard place with Magento and are wondering if anyone else had similar problems and could share their advice. Our Core_URL_Rewrite now containt 1.3 million records for an account that has 12000 products on 4 different store views. This has ballooned past the point that we are no longer able to reindex our URL Management. The option that is being suggested to us is to truncate the table and start over, though this will essentially kill our SEO for those pages.(Which as there are duplicates, I can only imagine how much they are going to be penalized by it) Would anyone have any advice other than truncating and starting over? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

SEO transfer to new website
My website currently has some strong SEO and i will be re-developing the website on a wordpress platform...which will change many of the existing URL. Will this affect the current pages that are well indexed in Google? Does using Wordpress or changing the URL extension (.html to .php) make a difference? If i want to make a clean transition without effecting our existing SEO...what are some essential steps i need to take? Example. Current page is www.mydomain.com/name.html .... and the new URL would be www.mydomain.com/product/name.php Thanks

Site structure from an SEO standpoint
I am fortunate enough to be working with a client who is still building their website. From a site structure standpoint, what can I look for with my SEO hat as they build their wire frames and storyboard their site? I want to make sure I don't miss any components that might be helpful short and long term

A very basic seo question
Sorry, been a long day and wanted a second opinion on this please.... I am developing an affiliate store which will have dozens of products in each category. We will not be indexing the product pages themselves as they are all duplicate content. The plan is to have just the first page of the category results indexed as this will have unique content about the products in that section. The later pagnated pages (ie pages 2,3,4,5 etc) will have 12 products on each but no unique content. Would the best advice be to add a canonical tag to all pages in the 'chairs' category pointing to the page with the first 12 results and the descriptions? This would ensure that the visitors are able to browse many pages of product but google won't index products 13 and onwards. Am I right in my thinkings? A supplemental question. What is the best way to block google from indexing/crawling 90,000 product listings which are pulled direct from the merchant so are not unique in the least. I have previous played with banning google from the product folder but it reports health issues in webmaster tools. Would the best route be a no index tag on all the product pages and to no follow all the products in the category listings? Many thanks Carl

Problem of indexing
Hello, sorry, I'm French and my English is not necessarily correct. I have a problem indexing in Google. Only the home page is referenced: http://bit.ly/yKP4nD. I am looking for several days but I do not understand why. I looked at: The robots.txt file is ok The sitemap, although it is in ASP, is valid with Google No spam, no hidden text I made a request for reconsideration via Google Webmaster Tools and it has no penalties We do not have noindex So I'm stuck and I'd like your opinion. thank you very much A.

Do 404 Errors hurt SEO ?
I recently did a crawl test and it listed over 10,000 pages, but around 282 of them generated 404 errors (bad links) I'm wondering how much this hurts overall SEO and if its something I should focus on fixing asap ? Thanks.
