Video Transcripts
-
Is there a way to attach a transcript to a video so that it is searchable without cluttering up the page with the full text? Occasionally you have a video where visitors are entertained and don't need or want a transcript, but it would still be useful to have it indexed as it is an accurate representation of the video.

I agree with EGOL. Look at the SEOMOZ video transcripts. Lots of times I'll just read through the transcript so I can get to the "nugget" of info really fast. We've been in the habit of doing video transcripts and lots of times those pages will outrank lots of other pages. How about just adding a link - "Read the Video Transcript" and going to a new page? Simple but effective.
FYI - you can use up to 5,000 characters in the YouTube description. Use all of it!
Good luck!

Doesn't youtube transcribe videos for you when you upload them? I think this would be great for SEO.

Just something to think about... A lot of people think that the transcript is useless and stinks up their webpage. However, a lot of visitors will read the transcript instead of watching the video. Not everyone wants the sound of a video - such as people at work who are visiting your site. Some people simply prefer reading because they can read a lot faster than the video.
Also, a lot of people like me will watch the video and then want to carefully read the important parts, slowly, two or three times to be sure that they understand.
Furthermore, a transcript makes your video useful to people who can not hear... or people who want it translated.
Everyone on this planet thinks differently. Transcripts are very very useful. Although I often use videos from YouTube or other websites without transcripts, I would not think of publishing a video of my own without the transcript clearly available to the visitor.

Can you use multiple videos without sacrificing load times?
We're using a lot of videos on our new website (www.4com.co.uk), but our immediate discovery has been that this has a negative impact on load times. We use a third party (Vidyard) to host our videos but we also tried YouTube and didn't see any difference. I was wondering if there's a way of using multiple videos without seeing this load speed issue or whether we just need to go with a different approach. Thanks all, appreciate any guidance! Matt

Video thumbnail pages with "sort" feature -- tons of duplicate content?
A client has 2 separate pages for video thumbnails. One page is "popular videos" with a sort function for over 700 pages of video thumbnails with 10 thumbnails and short desriptions per page. (/videos?sort_by=popularity). The second page is "latest videos" (/videos?sort_by=latest) with over 7,000 pages. Both pages have a sort function -- including latest, relevance, popularity, time uploaded, etc. Many of the same video thumbnails appear on both pages. Also, when you click a thumbnail you get a full video page and these pages appear to get indexed well. There seem to be duplicate content issues between the "popular" and "latest" pages, as well as within the sort results on each of those pages. (A unique URL is generated everytime you use the sort function i.e. /videos?sort_by=latest&uploaded=this_week). Before my head explodes, what is the best way to treat this? I was thinking a noindex, follow meta robot on every page of thumbnails since the individual video pages are well indexed, but that seems extreme. Thoughts?

Same Video on Multiple Pages and Sites... Duplicate Issues?
We're rolling out quite a bit of pro video and hosting on a 3-party platform/player (likely BrightCove) that also allows us to have the URL reside on our domain. Here is a scenario for a particular video asset: A. It's on a product page that the video is relevant for. B. We have an entry on our blog with the video C. We have a separate section of our site "Video Library" that provides a centralized view of all videos. It's there too. D. We eventually give the video to other sites (bloggers, industry educational sites etc) for outreach and link-building. A through C on our domain are all for user experience as every page is very relevant, but are there any duplicate video issues here? We would likely only have the transcript on the product page (though we're open to suggestions). Any related feedback would be appreciated. We want to make this scalable and done properly from the beginning (will be rolling out 1000+ videos in 2010)

If non-paying customers only get a 2 min snippet of a video, can my video length in sitemap.xml be the full length?
I am working on a website that all of its primary contents are videos. They have an assortment of free videos, but the majority or viewable only with a subscription to the site. If you don't have a subscription, you can see a 2 min video clip of the contents of the video. But all the videos can be anywhere from 10min to 1.5 hours. When I am auto-generating the sitemap.xml, can I put the full length of the videos for paying members in the XML in the video:duration property? Or because publicly only 2 minutes is available (unless you pay for a membership) is that frowned upon?
