Duplicate versions of pages on my site are getting indexed by Google...I think...
-
Hello,
Our site has a very high bounce rate, which in part is down to a slightly old fashioned design, and also because we are a retailer and I imagine many visitors are simply quickly comparing prices and then leaving.
However, having had a look in Google Analytics, I think that there is another issue that is contributing to a very high bounce rate. When I look in Content > Top Content, and order the pages in order of Bounce Rate, high to low, there are hundreds of instances of pages with just one or two visits in the last month, and a 100% bounce rate. The links are the same as our home page or pages on our website, but with extra letters and numbers at the end of the url.
We have an affiliate scheme, which provides our affiliates with unique codes for the products they want to link to, and my guess is that these urls are getting indexed. I've looked at a few other links, and they go to translated versions of a page from our website, generated by Google. Other urls seem to have been generated by search results from our own search on the website.
What worries me is that there are lots and lots of versions of the same page, with slightly different urls. I am by no means an SEO expert - I work for a very small company and am basically learning as I go - but I know that duplicate content is bad news. If the pages were on our own site, we could use 301s to redirect, but what about translated versions, or urls generated by affiliate schemes, or search results?
Many thanks,
Sophy

Many thanks - this is very useful information, I will look into seeing how we can change this.

Just to add, you won't have to worry about translated versions of your pages, as Google considers the same content in different languages unique. For example, you could have an English version and a Spanish version of the same page and both would be unique content. Also something to consider, Google Analytics displays 100% bounce rate for any visit that only views one page and if you'd like to get more insight into if visitors are loading videos, using Java, or downloading files in those views you'll want to incorporate event tracking: http://www.google.com/support/analytics/bin/answer.py?answer=55597

Hello Sophy.
A comments.
- Use the rel='canonical' on all your pages (more on this below),
- create a robots.txt file
- I'm seeing a lot of keywords in your Meta Keywords, (which does nothing) but you are missing the Meta Description, which is important.
In regards to the canonical, even if they come in with an affiliate link this will reduce or eliminate your duplicate page issue. If you have any way for a page to have duplicate content, use a canonical, if you have a page that is generated dynamically, figure out the best url for it and create a canonical for it.
If your having a high bounce rate, I'd look at the site, and see what people are doing. I would point more towards a
- 'Not so clear idea what to do', or
- 'doesn't offer the information we expected'
Consider using heatmaps, or using on of the survey sites that will send 30+ people to your site and fill out a form stating what they likes, didn't like, couldn't figure out, etc.

use the canonical tag
The links are the same as our home page or pages on our website, but with extra letters and numbers at the end of the url.
Those are most likely affiliate links getting indexed to prevent this use the canonical tag this will prevent the Affiliate links from being indexed and creating duplicate content where adding the affiliate ID in the URL is obligatory.

My affiliate links are being crawled by Google. Is this a bad thing? Also, should I add rel: nofollow to affiliate links?
Hi All, I have an issue on Google Search Console. It seems all my affiliate links are being crawled. Is this a bad thing? The reason I found out is that all but one link was flagged with a warming. It goes on to say that it was blocked by robots.txt. The strange thing is that I've not set any links to be blocked in robots.txt. Also, should affiliate links be nofollow? I'm asking because I was recently sent this article by Yoast on how to properly cloak my affiliate links without using a plugin. https://yoast.com/cloak-affiliate-links/ In the method, they apply the nofollow and noindex rules to the links. I'm just a little confused on how to go about affiliate links the SEO friendly way.

Will GA Autotrack affect affiliate sites not using autotrack?
I want to add autotrack.js to affiliate quote forms hosted on my site. However, I do not know how it will affect affiliate websites (not associated with my quote forms, but with the same Google Analytics code, that do not use autotrack. I read that "Autotrack is not an official Google Analytics product and does not qualify for GA Premium". Will it harm my affiliates in any way to have autotrack on their quote form but not on their websites? It will have their GA website tracking number.

Stopping these scum sites from sending traffic.
What is the best way to deal with these: http://www.goldenclicking.com/ and www.payclicking.com They keep sending my site traffic, however I am not paying for it, and would prefer to stop these sites. The traffic never converts, and I can't see anywhere that I am paying for the traffic (they are not an affiliate, and can't see them on the GDN) - so I don't even know whats in it for them. Has anyone ever dealt with these types of sites previously, tips on getting them to stop. I was just considering black listing there domains so they can't even reach our site. Thanks in Advance. Andy

SEO expert for site
Hey guys, I am looking for an SEO expert for my website. I have talked to a couple different people, but since I know nothing about it, it is hard for me to get a good read on whether they know what they are talking about or not. The main keywords are in the sports betting industry, which I believe to be a highly competitive space. Any advice, suggestions, or recommendations? Thank you

Tips to Get People to Share User Reviews Pages?
I'd like to know if you have some ideas / advice on how to get people to share or link to user reviews pages? I mean unlike blog posts, it's more difficult to promote this kind of content. Here's an example: http://www.webhostinghero.com/reviews/inmotion-hosting/ I mean I just can't post links to the review pages on social networks, forums, whatever, that would be just plain spammy.

What Do You Think About Publishing/Distributing Infographics?
I am looking for ways to gain links / visibility / traffic and so I did a little search on infographics and found this company: http://nowsourcing.com/services/infographics/ I contacted them about their services and here's a part of their reply: ====================================================
Affiliate Marketing | | sbrault74
Here's a bit more information about our pricing options: level 1 - infographic design (up to 3 major revisions, 30 minor revisions) - $3,000
level 2 - infographic design + research (up to 5 hours) - $4,000
level 3 - infographic design + research + promotion (social networks plus 30+ outlets) - $5,000 **Distribution is on a few different levels:**1 - we look for top name mainstream media / large traffic / high pr websites that will run the infographic
2 - we have a media network of sites where we feature the infographic
3 - we have the ability to publish on numerous sites that feature infographics and / or are niche vertical targeted
4 - we also promote via large audiences in social media networks such as Twitter, Facebook, Reddit, StumbleUpon and Pinterest **Here are some good examples of our artwork and promotion abilities:**Facebook vs Google Display network, www.wordstream.com/articles/facebook-vs-google-display-network
Estimated 15-20 million reach, was profiles in Adweek here - www.adweek.com/sa-article/beyond-words-142494
[...] ==================================================== Now my concern is with the distribution part. Would that be considered as spamming by Google? They seem to push the same infographic on a ton of websites. If you have better advices on infographics, please do share 🙂0 -
What is the right way to link to your main site?
Hi, we have a system for tracking the leads that comes from a specific affiliate website. each affiliate has a unique tracking code. not only for affiliates that work with us but also for the SEO team has an affiliate tracking code so our bosses can track the leads and traffic that come from the activity of the SEO team. this means, links towards our website look like: www.mydomain.com/?t_src=campaign&t=AFF&t_cre=links&A=371 www.mydomain.com/?A=371 I have few questions about this: 1. This is the right way to link to my company site? How dose google crawl those link? It's can harm the link value? 2. What is my option to show my boss all the traffic / leads that our seo team brings to the site trough Google Analytics? Hope to get your support. Thanks in advance.

Passing Google Analytics Variables Through Javascript?
Alright so here's my situation and hopefully someone can help... I want to be able to pass Google Analytics variables onto my affiliate links so I have some better conversion tracking data (not PPC traffic so no easy dynamic keyword insertion variables). I want to do something like this: User searches "keyword" in Google > User lands on mysite.com > search data is assigned to global variables that I can use in my affiliate link redirect script. afflink.com/?id=123&keyword=[GA keyword variable] Anybody know how I would go about doing that? I've seen other Non-GA tracking scripts do this but I can't figure it out here and it's driving me crazy! Thanks,

Drew EDIT: Just figured it out after a lot of guess and testing... I'm not sure if the way I'm doing it is the fastest, most optimized way but it works. Solution: I can pull the GA cookie and break it down to retrieve the keyword using PHP. For anyone searching for this in the future, here's how I did it: $gacookie = $_COOKIE['__utmz'];
$keyword = substr(strstr($gacookie, 'utmctr='),7); ?> Then I can use the $keyword variable wherever I need it. I haven't actually tested this on a live site yet but everything is working fine as of right now. If anyone has a better solution please feel free to answer.0
