Meta description tag missing in crawl diagnostics
-
Each week I've been looking at my crawl diagnostics and seomoz still flags a few pages with missing meta description although they are definitely in there. Any ideas on why this would be happening?

The first thing I notice is you do have two different pages
http://www.britishhardwoods.co.uk/oak-skirtings-architraves.php
http://www.britishhardwoods.co.uk/oak-skirtings-architraves.php/
The page with the "/" on the end is actually a different physical page. Both pages have the identical content presented differently. At a glance I would guess the page with the "/" ending is for users who view your site from a cell phone or with older browsers. Either way you need to canonicalize these pages. Right now those pages will show up as duplicate content to Google.
As to your initial post, both versions of the page do contain a proper meta description. Their length is good at around 110 characters.
I would check these pages in the crawl report for other issues. Perhaps it is getting confused. The canonical piece is a big concern which should be addressed immediately.
Good luck.

Hi Ryan,
This is the URL - http://www.britishhardwoods.co.uk/oak-skirtings-architraves.php
Really appreciate your help

That's strange as we don't currently use CMS for our site.
-
Can you offer an example of a page with the problem? I have a couple ideas.
Please copy/paste the URL from the crawl report instead of typing it.

The same is happening to a couple of our clients in their crawl errors. I think it must just be a bit of a bug... only happening with clients that use CMS though, not plain old HTML sites.

Site Hack In Meta Description
Hey MOZ Community, I am looking for some help in identifying where the following meta description is coming from on this home page - https://www.apins.com. I have scrubbed through the page source without being able to locate where the content is being pulled from. The website is built on WordPress and metas were updated using Yoast, but I am wondering if an installed plugin could be the culprit. On top of this, I have had a developer take a look for the "hack" and they have assured that the issue has been removed. I have submitted the URL in GSC a couple of times to be re-indexed but have not had much luck. Any thoughts would be much appreciated, the displayed description is below. Using hreflang tags properly.
On my site "example.com" I have set up the following in the header: The problem is that the tags are universal across the site, so every page has these tags, leading obviously to no return tag errors. I.e. the page www.example.ca/testing.html still has the tags: Not tags with "testing.html" in them. How bad is this? Does it matter?

Sitemap and crawl impact
If I have two links in the sitemap (for example: page1.html and page2.html) but the web-site contains more pages (page1.html, page2.html and page3.html) is this a sign for Google to not to crawl other pages? I.e. Will Google index page3.html? Consider that any page can be accessed.

"Standout" tag and "Original content" tags - what's the latest?
In November 2010 Google introduced the "standout tag" http://support.google.com/news/publisher/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=191283 I can't find any articles/blog posts/etc in google after that date, but its use was suggested in a google forum today to help with original content issues. Has anyone used them? Does anyone know what's the latest with them? Are they worth trying for SEO? Is there a possible SEO penalty for using them? Thanks, Jean
