Canonical tag or 301
-
Hi,
Our crawl report is showing duplicate content. some of the report I am clear about what to do but on others I am not.
Some of the duplicate content arises with a 'theme=default' on the end of the URL. Is this version of a page necessary for people to see when they visit the site (like a theme=print page is) in which case I think we should use a canonical tag, or is it not necessary in which case we should use a 301?
Thanks

Not at all, I'm happy to help!
I can only presume that the theme query you're getting is related to the WP/Joomla theme you're using. Wouldn't be able to help specifically without seeing it, but I would assume that the URL without the "theme=default" at the end should be the canonical URL.
For more stringent decisions - if you have a big amount of URLs and you're thinking of redirecting some, I'd start by looking at your analytics traffic - has any visitor come to your site via that URL within the last 60 days? If yes, I would definitely redirect. If no, I'd ask this:
Do you have any inbound links to that page? If you put in the root domain into Open Site Explorer and click on top pages and export the results into a CSV - you can see which pages have inbound links. Those without links can be ignored, those with links should be 301'd (provided you are happy that the links are of a good quality), in order for you to preserve the link equity, or SEO 'strength', of the link.

Thanks. Not sure what a "theme=default" version of a page is though. Is it one humans need to see like the print or text only version? I need to know so that I can do the right thing for the page i.e. canonical tag or 301.
Thanks for the meta robots tip - was just looking into that and it would have been my next question....
When you refer to stringent decisions for 301's, what would you do for the pages we may then decide not to 301?
Sorry for all the questions and your help is much appreciated Tom.

Hi there
The process you have there sounds absolutely right. If the other version of the page exists for a legitimate reason, you should use a canonical tag. You might also want to add to the head tag of your page, which will prevent Google from indexing the page.
For all other circumstances, a 301 is by in large a good route to go down, as it keeps the URLs clean and the user journey uninterrupted. If you have thousands of 301s to consider, you may want to be a bit more stringent in your decision making, as you don't want too many slowing down the .htaccess file.
A timely guide to canonical tags has been released on the Google webmaster page, which you can find here. Have a read through that, but other than that I say your thinking is spot on.
Hope this helps.

Canonical Page Question
Hi, I have a question relation to Canonical pages That i need clearing up. I am not sure that my bigcommere website is correctly configured and just wanted clarification from someone in the know. Take this page for example https://www.fishingtackleshop.com.au/barra-lures/ Canonical link is https://www.fishingtackleshop.com.au/barra-lures/ The Rel="next" link is https://www.fishingtackleshop.com.au/barra-lures/?sort=bestselling&page=2 and this page has a canonical tag as rel='canonical' href='https://www.fishingtackleshop.com.au/barra-lures/?page=2' /> Is this correct as above and working as it should or should the canonical tag for the second (pagination page) https://www.fishingtackleshop.com.au/barra-lures/?page=2 in our source code be saying rel='canonical' href='https://www.fishingtackleshop.com.au/barra-lures/' />

Missing 301 redirects
I just had a developer friend call me in a panic, because they had gone live with a new site and found out (the hard way) that they had missed some pages on their 301 redirects. So the pages are appearing in Google but serving 404s. Ouch! So their question was: other than running a report for 404 errors in something like Screaming Frog, is there a way to hunt down ONLY pages serving 404s, then export to CSV so they can be redirected? Anyone got any tricks up their sleeve?

IP canonization
Hi, I need your opinions about IP canonization. Site www.peoplemaps.com is on 78.136.30.112 IP. Now we redirect that IP to the main page (because of possible duplicate content). But, we have more sites on the same IP address. How can that affect on their SEO? Before redirecting, when we visit that IP address, the browser showed mainpage of www.peoplemaps.com, not any other site. Thanks, Milan edit: We have used 301 redirect.

Are duplicate page titles fixed by the canonical tag
Google Web Master Tools is saying that some of my pages have duplicate page titles because of pagination. However, I have implemented the canonical tag on the paginated pages which I thought would keep my site from being penalized for duplicate page titles. Is this correct? Or does canonical tag only relate to duplicate content issues?

How long should you keep 301 redirects?
Hi, Back in 2009 I decided to update an older site from .htm and .shtml to .php. In order to minimize the impact I would go in every month and do a 301 redirect on the .shtml page to the new .php page. So I have many that range from 2009 through 2010. I had left the old 301's because I felt they would only be used if needed but I would think I should clean up my .htaccess by removing the old 301 redirects if they are not needed. How long should you keep this type of 301 redirect? Thanks!

Canonical tag in preferred and duplicate page
Hi, I have a super spiffy (not) CMS that tends to create some pages at the root level of the site (not where I want it) i.e. www.site.com/page.htm as well as the desired location i.e. www.site.com/category/keyword/page.htm . Now obviously a canonical tag inserted into the URL at the undesired location would be the best option, however the source code is exactly the same for both pages (can’t change this) i.e. if I put the canonical tag that reads www.site.com/category/keyword/page.htm"/> it will appear in the head section of both pages, the desired URL and the non desired URL. Will a canonical tag inserted into the head section of a the preferred URL directing the search engine spiders pretty much to itself cause more grieft than the solution it offers re duplicate content ?
