What are the first ten steps you should do with a new website
-
First of all i would like to say how amazing this forum is, i have learnt a lot with all the great help.
I am launching a new site mainly to allow me to learn seo and to understand what is involved in building a new site and get it to the search engines.
the site is here which i have started today which is a lifestyle magazine is http://www.womenlifestylemagazine.com/
What i am trying to understand is, what are the first most important steps when trying to get google and traffic to your site.
the site will be complete in the next week or so but in the meantime i want to use this site to learn more about seo and how you get the site discovered by visitors and search engines and the time scale behind it.
I am hoping that other people who are new to seo and are building a new site will be able to use this post to learn about what is involved and learn like me.
Would be great to hear from people who have started their own site so we can all understand what are the important steps to make and which things we should do in which order.
thank you everyone

thank you for that. i am going to send a number of articles to free article sites but it is trying to find a good article site to do this. in the past when i have done this i have found that many people use my articles but they never put the link to the article to my site which is a big let down.

Good answer Ryan,
Adding what he said just now...Diane, your goal ppls normally have their own blog or microblog which can helps in your link building efforts... allow peoples to make comments in your website and answer them is a good way to get in touch w/ ppls. "Connect and then ask for links"
Don't forget to submit your website to google: http://www.google.com/addurl/?continue=/addurl
Make use of the google webmasters tools: www.google.com/webmasters/ , and submit a sitemap.xml it helps a lot to index your pages.
You need to keep in mind that those keywords u selected aren't easy to get good position w/ new websites...
The best way to get good backlinks to your website is write a unique content, i can't find another way...
Hope it can help..

Hi Diane.
The first step I would recommend is reading the Beginner's Guide to SEO. I am not simply throwing a link at you. This is truly GREAT information which you should read from cover to cover, and keep as a reference.
Before going any further, I highly recommend you take some time to ponder WHY you are making this site. There already are a huge number of sites which offer this information. What EXACTLY will your site offer that is not already available from other sites? This thought process is all about determining your niche.
Your site seems too broad at the moment to be successful in SERPs. There are an incredible number of other sites who have brand recognition and an established user base, along with strong financial resources. In order to effectively compete you will need a very strong focus, a narrow niche, and a detailed plan on exactly why a user should choose your site over the competition.
http://www.womenshealthmag.com/
Take a close look at your competition and see what they are doing. Have a clear plan for how your site will be an improvement for readers. Take a look at the wiki for your niche: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_women's_magazines
You will see a list of about 80 other women's magazines, along with a list of about 25 magazines that have stop publishing.
I am not trying to discourage you. To the contrary, I want you to be successful in your endeavor. I would like to see you develop a very sharp focus which can help you attract and retain a base of dedicated followers.

thank you for that.
My site will be aimed at women from the ages of 20 - 60
I want them to come and read the articles and tell their friends and also be interested in the products that i will be advertising on there but not adverts that will be in your face. i am considering just two adverts per page.
the keywords that i have researched at the moment is
lifestyle magazine
magazine for women
women magazine
holiday reviews
travel magazine
travel tips
hotel reviews
health news
health magazine
weight loss advice
the magazine is going to be a lifestyle magazine and will cover health, travel, showbiz news, fashion, product reviews, beauty tips.
the struggle will be is sorting out the home page and making sure i get the right keywords there and where to place them. I want people to come to the magazine who are looking for an online lifestyle magazine or a women magazine

I dunno about 10 steps (I hate lists that try to make some round number) but my steps would be
- Who do you want to visit your site? Clearly women in this case, but what kind of women?
- What do you want your visitors to do on your site? Buy? Read? Participate?
- Identify your keywords that your audience is using. Look at similar sites and do several searches. Use keyword research tools like the Adwords traffic estimator to help narrow down words.
- Build your content, focusing on your keywords. You need content that people want, not some formulaic mess that sounds like it was written by a content farm. Read your own content. Would you want to read your site? You need to be on topic and relevant.
- Spread the news. Without spamming, suggest your site in places where it makes sense. Don't worry about SEO, you just want traffic. Don't just suggest your main page, but suggest deeper content (i.e. "Here's an article I wrote you might find helpful in doing this"). Blogs and forums can be good places to start, but be careful ,lest you start sounding like spam.
- Consider advertising. Initially, your site needs to be found and advertising can bring people in. If you've done steps 1-5 well enough, your site should start drawing in links naturally as people begin to suggest you socially (blog links, social links, Google +1, etc).

Sub domains take away the pagerank/link juice of main website?
Hi all, I would like to know how sub domains will be collaborated with domain or main website in terms of authority, backlinks, link juice, etc...Link juice will be passed to sub domains from domain or vice versa? If there are large number of pages in sub domain, will that going to impact the ranking of main domain? Backlinks of sub domain are going to be a deciding factor for website ranking too? Thanks

Anyone else noticing "Related Topics" featured snippet? Is this new?
First time I've seen this type of featured snippet and now have seen it twice in the space of a couple hours. Queries on Google UK desktop: surgical instruments Hawking radiation Is this new? It definitely is for the "surgical instruments" search. Google are highlighting related topics/keywords in bold beneath the usual featured snippet. b261ea5b3279991f8549d20127f8fde3.png

New site or subdomain
what are pros and cons of launching a new product site as opposed to placing it under a subdomain of the company site? will the new site be placed in the google sandbox? the main goal is to provide credibility for the product, and by placing it under the company site that has been live for over 10 years. It is not a consumer product - more dealers. So people would be pushed to the site or find it through the brochure.

Any SEO thoughts about Google's new Data Highlighter for products?
After searching around on the web for a while I couldn't find any case studies or interesting posting about Google's new feature to highlight structured data. In Google Webmaster Tools you can now tag your products to be displayed as structured data in Google's search results. Two questions that rose immediately: 1. What effect will Google's new Data Hightlighter for products have on your SEO? Can we expect better CTR's for productspage results in Google? Better conversion rates perhaps? Any case studies that show KPI improvements after using structured data for products? 2. I would love to see some examples in the search results to see what productpages would look like after Data Highlighting it. Your thoughts or input about this subject will be much appreciated.

Post penguin & panda update. what would be a good seo strategies for brand new sites
Hi there. I have the luxury of launching a few sites after the penguin and panda updates, so I can start from scratch and hopefully do it right. I will get SEO companies to help me with this so i just want to ask for advices on what would be a good strategies for a brand new site. my understand of the new updates is this content and user experience is important, like how long they spend, how many pages etc social media is important. we intent to engage FB and twitter alot. in New Zealand, not too many people use google+ so we will probbaly just concentrate on the first two hopefully we will try to get people to share our website via social media, apparent that is important should only concentrate on high quality backlinks with a good diverse set of alt tags, but concentrate on branding rather than keywords. Am i correct to say that so far? if that is the principle, what would be the strategy to implement these goals? Links to any articles would also be great please. Love learning. i just want to do this right and hopefully try to future proof the sites against updates as possible. i guess quality content and links will most likely to be safe. Thank you for your help.

New Zealand rankings - Is Google taking city into account now?
I've just noticed over the last 24 hours that Google New Zealand seems to be taking city into account with the search results - when I search from Christchurch - I get CHCH companies and Auckland results when searching from Auckland. I would like to rank my client nationally - any tips? Has anyone else noticed this? I need to be the top of Google for my keyword throughout the country. Any articles that could help? Kind regards, David

Content on Wordpress blog inside the main website for SEO
Hi, We have our main website and our blog on blog.practo.com. Now what I see is that we wish to write in content to grow our seo keywords and links. Should we put the blog as www.practo.com/blog and then begin writing all the content or we should put the wordpress blog as www.practo.com/(wordpress blog here) and then begin writing the content. For best practices I suppose we should have content lined up as www.sitename.com/category/article name etc or www.sitename.com/article name etc - am I correct? Our main site consists of few html pages and then we have our software on a different sub domain. What are the best ways to publish content and get it crawled at a faster rate for growth? I would also wish to understand how to measure the number of growth in % to our content we are writing. Only via google analytics or some other tool? Say I wish to see the growth of 10 articles from month of may and compare it to the month of april or march 2012. So what tools could I use to see if we are progressing or not? Thanks

Top 5 most optimized websites
Throwing this question out to the community but was wondering if anyone can direct me on how I can find the top 5 or 10 ten sites that have been most optimized for search engines. Meaning which web sites have the best reputation when it comes to website optimization for search engines or is there a resource where I can read about websites that have been ranked as the best when it comes to following best practices and have constantly ranked well within their industry? Figured it's always a good idea to learn from the best by looking at what they are doing. Thank you.
