Blog on a subdomain vs subfolder?
-
Hi,
Does anyone have data to show that a subfolder is better than a subdomain for a blog? From what I've read, it sounds like both are a viable option but you choose subdomain if you want to build your blog as a distinct entity. Do you get ranked more quickly with a subfolder? Do you see X% more lift? Has anyone tested or seen tests around this subject?
Any input is appreciated! Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the insight, I appreciate the well-thought response.

A subdomain is viewed as a separate domain. A subfolder is viewed as your existing domain.
If you owned "domain.com" you could sell a subdomain to others for any and all possible combinations. This is basically what wordpress.com does, for example. When you make yoursite.wordpress.com, you don't get any the benefits of wordpress' domain authority.
From a SEO perspective, there isn't much difference between yoursite.wordpress.com and www.yoursite.com. It's a different domain. It's really difficult to say if Google has any extremely minor boost in any way to a subdomain, but I am not aware of any.
When you offer a blog in a subfolder, it is part of your site. It inherits your DA, and any links to the blog can add to your site's overall DA.
The bottom line is, if this blog is directly related to your site and will be focused on the same topics as your site, you would most likely prefer it to be a subfolder. If this blog is not related to your site, or will discuss off-topic issues, then you would prefer it as a subdomain.
This topic has been discussed many times and Google is your friend (in this case). You can take a look at the SEOmoz article: http://www.seomoz.org/blog/understanding-root-domains-subdomains-vs-subfolders-microsites or use Google to search the many articles on this topic: http://lmgtfy.com/?q=blog+subdomain+vs+subfolder
Do you get ranked more quickly with a subfolder?
Your site's ranking would be based on your DA factors. The higher your DA, the more important your site's content is to Google, the more often you should be crawled. The subdomain would be seen as a brand new site. Even to submit a sitemap for it you would have to first verify it as a new site with Google. Based on these factors I would say Yes, if you had an established site your blog would be ranked faster as a folder on the existing site as opposed to a new subdomain.
Do you see X% more lift?
That is the definition of DA. How likely pages on your existing site are likely to rank well. If you have an established site with good DA, and you add a blog then yes your pages should rank better on the main site when compared to the same article on a newly created subdomain.

Blogs Not Getting Indexed Intermittently - Why?
Over the past 5 months many of our clients are having indexing issues for their blog posts.
Technical SEO | | JohnBracamontes
A blog from 5 months ago could be indexed, and a blog from 1 month ago could be indexed but blogs from 4, 3 and 2 months ago aren't indexed. It isn't consistent and there is not commonality across all of these clients that would point to why this is happening. We've checked sitemap, robots, canonical issues, internal linking, combed through Search Console, run Moz reports, run SEM Rush reports (sorry Moz), but can't find anything. We are now manually submitting URLs to be indexed to try and ensure they get into the index. Search console reports for many of the URLs will show that the blog has been fetched and crawled, but not indexed (with no errors). In some cases we find that the blog paginated pages (i.e. blog/page/2 , blog/page/3 , etc.) are getting indexed but not the blogs themselves. There aren't any nofollow tags on the links going to the blogs either. Any ideas? *I've added a screenshot of one of the URL inspection reports from Search Console alt text0 -
What are the steps to submitting a sitemap for a blog?
We are in the process of a website migration and need to submit a site map for our website and blog. What are the steps to follow for submitting a site map for the blog? Can we submit with just the /blog URL or do we need to include each category?

DNS vs IIS redirection
I'm working on a project where a site has gone through a rebrand and is therefore also moving to a new domain name. Some pages have been merged on the new site so it's not a lift and shift job and so I'm writing up a redirect plan. Their IT dept have asked if we want redirects done by DNS redirect or IIS redirect. Which one will allow us to have redirects on a page level and not a domain level? I think IIS may be the right route but would love your thoughts on this please.

Direct link vs 302 redirect
So we have recently relaunched a site that we manage. As part of this we have changed the domain. The webdesign agency that built the new site have implemented a direct link from the old domain to the new domain. What is best practice a direct link or a 302 redirect? Thanks

Keyword Suggestions Tool & Different Subdomains
Hey all, Was reading Dan Shure's brilliant post on the Keyword Planner, and decided to plug a few of my own pages into the URL-suggester tool as well. What I got back was nothing short of strange. After plugging in our Features page, (which describes our Social Media Contesting Platform,) and getting back a bunch of suggestions related to Dr Seuss and Interior Design Scholarships, I realized that the Keyword Suggestion tool was being broken by our subdomains. I looked for precedent on my particular issue, but I think I might not be searching properly. Could anyone provide any insight into whether or not this might affect how spiders see the content on Strutta.com, whether or not this is just something that will affect the Keyword Suggestions Tool or actual SERP rankings, and if this content is already present elsewhere on MOZ, a link to said content? Much obliged 🙂

Meta Description VS Rich Snippets
Hello everyone, I have one question: there is a way to tell Google to take the meta description for the search results instead of the rich snippets? I already read some posts here in moz, but no answer was found. In the post was said that if you have keywords in the meta google may take this information instead, but it's not like this as i have keywords in the meta tags. The fact is that, in this way, the descriptions are not compelling at all, as they were intended to be. If it's not worth for ranking, so why google does not allow at least to have it's own website descriptions in their search results? I undestand that spam issues may be an answer, but in this way it penalizes also not spammy websites that may convert more if with a much more compelling description than the snippets. What do you think? and there is any way to fix this problem? Thanks!

How to recover from duplicate subdomain penalty?
Two and half a weeks ago, my site was slapped with a penalty -- 60% of organic traffic disappeared over 2-3 days. After investigating we discovered that our site was serving the same content for all subdomains, and Google somehow had two additional subdomains it was crawling and indexing. We solved the issue with 301 redirects to our main site (www) a couple of days after the drop -- about two weeks ago. Our rankings have not recovered, and the subdomains are still indexed per Webmaster Tools. Yesterday we submitted a Reconsideration Request. Will that help? Is there any other way to speed up the process of lifting the penalty? This is the site: http://goo.gl/3DCbl Thank you!
