Recommended Wordpress Plugins
-
Hey Seomoz'ers,
What would you recommend to use as plugins for wordpress when starting a new blog?
-
I would also include:
"ping optimizer" (for SEO puprposes, prevent from pinging too often, eg. when correcting or updating a post)
I almost always use "contact form 7" , a (multilingual) contact form

Does anyone have a opinion in the battle between All in one SEO pack vs Headspace?..

No one has brought up Yoast yet. This is my favorite so far because I want a plugin that handles everything. Yoast handles almost everything we've needed on a lot of sites and blogs we've worked with.
-
Besides AIOSEO I use the following:
Robots Meta: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/robots-meta/ This plugin lets you set follow/nofollow & index/noindex on each page + post (very useful) as well as giving an easy way to edit your htaccess file
Google XML Sitemap: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/google-sitemap-generator/ This auto-generates an XML sitemap for you as well as pings the major search engines anytime you update or add a page/post.
Other plugins I also like to use:
Disqus Commenting: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/disqus-comment-system/ Awesome comment system replacement by the same company who maintains WP. Lets users login with Facebook + Twitter etc.
Google Analytics for WordPress: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/google-analytics-for-wordpress/ Nice plugin to handle Analytics for you. Auto tags downloads and external links as events. There are others out there that handle this nicely as well by Yoast and a couple of others.

Some plugins I advise are worth looking at are:
-
All in one SEO.
-
Sharing is SEXY
*** Google Analytics for WordPress**
***** Google XML Sitemaps
***** SI CAPTCHA Anti-Spam
***** 404 SEO Plugin (good 404 plugin I have used)
You also need to test what will work best for you

How to optimize Wordpress.org hosted blogs
I've got a blog I'm working on that isn't self-hosted. I've attached a screenshot of the message I get if I try to install any plugins. I really want to block archive, author, tag, category, etc pages but I can't seem to find a way since there's no server for me to block via robots.txt or .htaccess and I can't actually install these plugins which would give me the ability to do it. Any suggestions? vQfnt

Teaching SEO: what are the recommended first few principles I should cover?
If I need to teach a layman how to do SEO, where should I start and what main principles should I cover first? There's so much to go through but I need an organised way to approach this without overwhelming a person. Would appreciate your advise if you have taught a lay person this new skill. Thanks!

Who uses WordPress Tags anymore?
Just curious if people are still using WordPress Tags. I wonder if with the direction Google is going the last couple years, having sites that get bloated with extraneous Tag archives just decreases the quality of the site.

How can I Style Long "List Posts" in Wordpress?
Hi All, I have been working on a list-post which spans over 100 items. Each item on the list has a quick blurb to explain it, an image and a few resource links. I am trying to find an attractive way to present this long list post in Wordpress. I have seen several sites with long list posts however; they place their items one on top of the other which yields a VERY long page and the end user has to do a lot of scrolling. Others turn their lists into slideshows, but I have no data on how slides perform against 10-mile-long-lists which load in 1 page. I would like to do something similar to what List25.com does as they present about 5-10 items per page and they seem to have pagination. The pagination part I understand however; is there a shortcode plugin to format lists in an attractive way just like list25?

How do you handle Wordpress sitemaps within your site?
I have a regular site map on my site and I also have a Wordpress site installed within it that we use for blog/news content. I currently have an auto-sitemap generator installed in Wordpress which automatically updates the sitemap and submits it to the search engines each time the blog is updated. The question I have (which I think I know the answer to but I just want to confirm) is do I have to include all of the articles within the blog in the main site's sitemap despite the Wordpress sitemap having them in there already? If I do include the articles in the main website's sitemap, they would also be in the Wordpress sitemap as well, which is redundant. Redundancy is not good, so I just want to make sure.

302 Redirects for Wordpress Blog Trackbacks
I'm a newbie, and just got my first crawl diagnostics report. I was looking at the temporary redirects, and virtually all of them are trackback URLs from our blog (we use ourdomain.com/blog and Wordpress). The diagnostics report says they're 302 redirects. Is this problematic and, if so, can you suggest the best way to fix the problem? Thanks in advance for your help!

Syndicated posts extracts on wordpress and impact on SERPS
On our main site (http://www.deeperblue.com) we've been syndicating posts (not the full posts just link and short extract) from a trusted partner of ours. These posts are listed as Diverwire Staff and point directly back to the original website. What i'm concerned about is the impact on SERPS - we don't want to be penalised by any of the search engines.
