Why is this store getting hurt in SERPs when they removed duplicate content?
-
I work with an e-commerce client who got hit hard by Panda. They are very cautious, and want small-scale tests to prove each hypothesis before committing to larger changes.
Recently, we reworked content on 30 product detail pages. Before, these product pages featured some original content mixed with some manufacturer content. The change we made was to remove the manufacturer content completely from the product page, leaving about 300 words of high-quality, original content--all of which was written by subject matter experts.
I assumed that Google viewed this manufacturer text as duplicate content. However, when these 30 modified pages were compared to the control, they performed significantly worse.
Question 1: Does any have any idea why these pages would perform worse than the control?
Question 2: Do you have any tips for convincing this client to try another test or get the buy-in to make the larger changes that--in theory--need to happen?FWIW, this client has about 10,000 product detail pages--the vast majority of which contain just manufacturer content.
I appreciate your thoughts.

I would be curious to look at each form of the pages using the LDA tool.
The main reason to use the tool is to understand if you are significantly reducing the page's relevancy to your target keyword(s).

Hi Ryan,
Thank you for your thoughtful reply.
We didn't make any changes to any of the titles or any overall site changes. We measured the changes using internal tracking tools to get the daily traffic by search engine to each product detail page. We also used Google Webmaster Tools to estimate SERP positional data.
The updated pages do have about half as many total words as the control, so that could definitely explain it.
For followup testing, I'm thinking of trying:
- test versus control, same word count, test is 100% original, control is 0% original
- test versus control, same word count, test is 50% original, control is 0% original
- test versus control, same word count, test is 25% original, control is 0% original

Hi Sarah.
I can't blame the client for wanting small tests. It's actually a prudent strategy.
I think having some manufacturer content mixed in with other quality content is fine. Normally 300 words would be a bit thin but for product pages that is not bad at all.
What changes to the page were made other then the content? Did the title change at all?
How exactly are you measuring the performance of these pages. Please provide as much detail as possible.
Is there any other site wide changes being made at the same time?
Does any have any idea why these pages would perform worse than the control?
Assuming there are no other factors involved, which is a big assumption, the only logical response I can offer is the revised pages are viewed by Google as weaker. By removing the manufacturer's content the pages are thinner and less relevant to the keywords involved.
Do you have any tips for convincing this client to try another test or get the buy-in to make the larger changes that--in theory--need to happen?
How to restore a client's confidence after making an error?
Assure the client you realize they are highly dependent upon their rankings for sales. You are proceeding under your experiences and knowledge, which has been successful in the past. Panda is a new thing and Google is still making rolling out new changes. The industry is still learning and adjusting to these changes. You are consulting with others regarding the unexpected results and you are committed to ensuring this project is properly completed.

What to do with outdated and irrelevant content on a website?
Hi everyone, On our corporate website we have a blog where we publish articles which are directly related to our company (house heating systems and gas cylinders) and some articles which are completely irrelevant to our core business, but which might be of interest to our potential clients. Recently I've been told that it is not a good idea to include these not directly related posts to our core business, because Google might be somewhat confused at to what our core business is all about. I was advised to research this topic and think of completely removing blog posts that are irrelevant to our core business from our blog. By removing I mean completely removing pages and setting a 410 status to tell Google that it is not a 404 error but that these pages were intentionally removed. I would like to hear some independent advice from Moz community as to what I should do? Thank you very much in advance.

Duplicates from weird domains
My sit is http://www.webdesign.org/, but the other day I found these sites that have duplicates of my original site: <a>http://wordpresswww.webdesign.org/</a><a>http://fdsfsdswww.webdesign.org/</a><a>http://gfdgdfgdfgwordpresswww.webdesign.org/</a><a>http://w54354353w.webdesign.org/</a>http://wojhkhjkhw.webdesign.org/What really freaks me out is that the content on those sites is 100% up to date. Same as on http://www.webdesign.org/. Now here's my question. 1. Since my site http://www.webdesign.org/ is the root domain, I take it that I can somehow disable those sites (subdomains) from my domain 'admin panel' or what not?2. If you can use those subdomains even if you don't own the root domain (http://www.webdesign.org/), it looks that some negative SEO has been done to my site?Which of my assumptions are right? Please help me to figure that out.

Duplicate Content From Huffington Post Blog
A client who writes blog posts for Huffington Post also wants an identical version of the blog posted to his personal site. Do you think there could be a problem of being punished for duplicate content? Would a better SEO practice be to have the client do an on-site blog just linking to the Huffington Post blog and providing information about it?

Filling Up Content For A New News Publishing Site
Hello, SEO Gurus. I have a client whom I've been working with for a few months now, and part of our service offering is to publish and promote fresh, daily content on his site's blog. This strategy has been a huge success thus far, he is very happy with the content, etc. Now, he is getting ready to launch a second site, which will be a news publishing site for his industry niche, and we will once again be providing the content on a daily basis: we're going to be producing 10 to 15 articles a day. It's a big operation for us. The client, however, is concerned that he doesn't want the site to appear "thin" on content in the early going, and asked if it would be possible to populate the new site with the articles we wrote on the other site's blog. My gut reaction to this is that it would be an exceedingly bad idea to do this. While we are the ones who authored the original content (and we've used author tags and publishing markup), the best bet is to simply start fresh. Besides that, seeing as we'll be pumping out tons of content on a daily basis, it won't take long to fill up the content coffers. That being said, I just wanted to run this past you all and see if anyone had any alternative ideas on how to use the old content without it being duplicate content. I was thinking that maybe designating all of the old articles with noindex, nofollow could be an option? Many thanks in advance for your time and attention. Sincerely, Mike

Can you link build without adding any content to the website?
I am an agency-side SEO who has a few different SEO clients. A couple of them absolutely refuse to add any content to their site - no blog, no articles, no link bait, nothing. They have resisted efforts for any content to be placed on their site - whether it is written by us, them, or a third party. They just don't see the value in it, despite my attempts to persuade them. As a result, these websites are just brochure websites. What are your options for link building in this situation? If content is the foundation of white hat link building, what do you do if the client refuses to add content to their site? All help gratefully received! Thanks

How do I get the correct picture to show up in the SERPs?
When I search for "Popular Baby Names" using Google UK, I get the image below that is clearly displaying the wrong picture. I believe they are coming from a module on the page in the left rail. I know I can use Robots.txt to have Google not show the image at all, but I don't want to impact my click through. What is the best way to have the search engine either not display an image that is not part of the resulting article or better yet, pick the right image. |

Best places to get pictures for blog posts?
Well I'm really sick of reading people questions saying "help my sites been affected by penguin" So I thought I would ask something about blogging, where is the best place to find and buy pictures for blog posts? I already use Wikimedia commons. But I'm interested websites that have a bigger range that aren't too pricey. What do you recommend?

Onsite Content - Word Count & KW Density
Does the word count of a webpage make a difference to search engines? Are longer word counts on pages indexed higher or given higher priority? For example, say you have 300 words of copy packed with 20 keywords, and say you also have 700 words of copy that have the same 20 keywords worked in, does Google have a preference over which one it ranks higher?
