Re-write homepage url for non EMD for SEO
-
Hi,
A lot of talk about EMD's lately not just here but all over SEO and affiliate forums.
I've dabbled in emd's but have decided to go against the grain and use a non emd. I think I can optimise hard enough to rank and at the same time build a brand, which is where most emd's fail.
But my question is this:
If you are targeting lets say the term 'running trainers' and the domain is runyoursocksoff.com would it be more beneficial to rewrite the root domain to this:
runyoursocksoff.com/running-trainers/
It does look messy to me and more then likely I would not use this but I have seen it a few times and was wondering if its a work around for non emd's.

I agree. I very much love to build a brand and prefer that option.
I have been offering SEO services and decided to brand my company, and started Vitopian.com. Vitopian is a completely made up brand. I could have chosen VitopianSEO or other options but I like my choice and if I can ever find the time to build my site (it is really just a framework at the moment with no content) then I very much look forward to building the brand.
"Vitopian" is one word which I like. Two word names can work, three is too much in my opinion. I really don't like "runyoursocksoff" because it has four words. That's ok! This is your vision. I've been wrong before and you have a great opportunity to build the brand.

To be honest id most likely go for just runyoursocksoff.com and try my best to SEO for the term with out keyword sub domains or folders.
I imagine someone with your experience Ryan you would do the same and I kind of hope even if the emd was available you would still go for runyoursocksoff.com anyway to build a brand knowing your knowledge is good enough to rank a term without the aid of a emd.

If that was going to be the domain you always used for the site, I would suggest running-trainers.runyoursocksoff.com as being preferential over the folder.
Overall I don't like it because as Rene suggested it is a bit too long. Your domain name is 4 words and the subdomain has a hyphen. Try to come up with better alternatives. Spend a week brainstorming ideas.

for keyword targeting, the short answer is: yes.
Tthe longer answer is: Yes but be careful with too long URL's

Url too long
Hi we have a wordpress website for Office Furniture Our domain name does not have office furniture in it. So we went from having domain.com/shop/category/second-sub-cat to domain.com/office-furniture/category/second-category However we now have 509 products flagged with too long urls I am wondering whether we should change back : For example domain.com/office-furniture/office-corner-desks/beech-corner-desks Should I go back to domain.com/shop/office-corner-desks/beech-corner-desks Or am I going to confuse matters even more? I should say this only affects categories as the products themselves are /shop/product I am just concerned that changing the re-direct in place originally will just make matters worse and confuse things - would I get more value changing back? Or should I stick with it and just try to shorten urls individually by product titles etc

Duplicate URL errors when URL's are unique
Hi All, I'm running through MOZ analytics site crawl report and it is showing numerous duplicate URL errors, but the URLs appear to be unique. I see that the majority of the URL's are the same, but shouldn't the different brands make them unique to one another? http://www.sierratradingpost.com/clearance~1/clothing~d~5/tech-couture~b~33328/ http://www.sierratradingpost.com/clearance~1/clothing~d~5/zobha~b~3072/ Any ideas as to why these would be shown as duplicate URL errors?

Removing old URLs from Google
We rebuilt a site about a year ago on a new platform however Google is still indexing URL's from the old site that we have no control over. We had hoped that time would have 'cleaned' these out but they are still being flagged in HTML improvements in GWT. Is there anything we can do to effect these 'external' dropping out of the indexing given that they are still being picked up after a year.

Paying someone for SEO help?
Moz has been very helpful but since my site was hit by Google Panda and I am getting very little organic traffic, I am thinking about having someone who really knows SEO take a look and give me some help. However, I have no idea how to find someone reputable. Any advice for hiring someone for SEO help (on a budget?)

Redirecting URLS on windows
Could anyone help out here please. A client of ours have reveloped their website from HTML to ASP (helpful!). They have 60 odd pages indexed in Google with the .html extension. We need to do a redirect on these pages so that all link juice is passed to the new pages. What would be the best way to do this please?

SEO Domain Values
I always thought that there was no difference in value between a .com and .net, also that hyphens have the same value as the keyphrase without the hyphen. But I have heard Rand lately saying hyphens are spammy - whats the go? Is CarParts.com better than Car-Parts.com or Car-Parts.net etc?
