Sub domain versus separate domains, which is better for Search engine purposes?
-
We are pitching to a hotel client to build two new websites, a summer website and a winter website, two completely different looking websites.
The client wants to automatically switch their domain name to point to one or the other, depending on the time of year. The customer does not want to use a landing page where you would choose which site to visit; they want the domain name to go directly to the relevant website.
Our options:
Set up two new domain names and optimise each website based on the holiday season and facilities offered at that time of year. Then change the exisiting domain name to point at the website that is in season.
Or
Use the existing domain name and setup two sub domains, switching the home page as necessary.
We have been chewing this one over for a couple of days, the concern that we have with both options is loss of search visibility. The current website performs well in search engines, it has a home page rank of 4 and sub-pages ranking 2 and 3’s, when we point the domain at the summer site (the client only has a winter website at present) then we will lose all of the search engine benefits already gained. The new summer content will be significantly different to the winter content. We then work hard for six months optimising the summer site and switch back to the Winter site, the content will be wrong.
Maybe because it's Friday afternoon we cannot see the light for the smoke of the cars leaving the car park for the weekend, or maybe there is no right or wrong approach.
Is there another option? Are we not seeing the wood for the trees?
Your comments highly welcome.

Thank you for your response. Links is a big concern of ours, the option to display both sites on an entry page is a definite non starter, the client doesn't like that idea. I like the option of using sub folders. We would link between the two sites to allow a user to book rooms in either season.
I suppose these types of projects are the ones that challenge us all to think outside the box.
Thank you again, food for thought.

What happens if its summer and I want to book my winter break or winter and I want to book my summer break. I would make sure that they are definitely sure they want two versions of the site before I started but if they are then there is a possible 3rd option to consider - subfolders - www.example.com/summer and www.example.com/winter
For 6 months you redirect anyone coming to the www.example.com site to the required seasonal version. Any links in will to an extent benefit the whole site rather than the one subdomain of the site.
One problem you are going to face is that if you build up links to the summer domain or folder then switch to the winter site some people may remove their link to you as it no longer points to the page that it did when they set up the link.
My preferred option would be a home page giving the option to get to navigate to both sets of content which is held in subfolders with the focus of the home page (in terms of content and design) switching when the seasons change. There would be no need for redirects, less SEO issues, better for a user who is planning ahead and means that any links achieved by either section of the site benefit the domain as a whole.
If wanted to minimise the footprint of the link to the other seasons site then like some sites that have small country selectors at the top of the screen there could be a small season selector that a user only uses when they want to view the off season site.

Hundreds of Subdomains under a powerful domain
Hello, I own a domain FeedsPortal - com As you can see from the link profile, it has some fantastic referring domains and links. Because of this, it has a DA of 86, with a good CF/TF. The problem is that nearly all of these powerful links are for the sub domains under the main domain. For example, it has a link on this page on MSN... https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/offbeat/finland-home-of-the-dollar103000-speeding-ticket/ar-AA9GA9i?ocid=ansAtlantic11 On this MSN article, it has a link to http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/TheAtlantic/~3/PK4bw0Tkkps/story01.htm (a link under Google.com), which then forwards to my domain under a sub domain http://theatlantic.feedsportal.com/c/34375/f/..... I have many hundreds of sub domains like this. I have a feeling redirecting all non-existent sub domains to the homepage would be a bad idea for SEO. Does anyone else see of a way to do this without harming my SEO? I suppose the only way to do it properly would be to write articles about each subdomain. For example, http://theatlantic.feedsportal.com, write an article about The Atlantic, then forward all traffic meant for theatlantic.feedsportal.com to feedsportal.com/10-reasons-why-the-atlantic-is-great/ Does anyone else have an idea of how to at least get a list of the non-existant sub domains that have links so I can maybe create articles for each sub domain? Or is there a simpler way to do this. Thanks!

One domain - Multiple servers
Can I have the root domain pointing to one server and other URLs on the domain pointing to another server without redirecting, domain masking or HTML masking? Dealing with an old site that is a mess. I want to avoid migrating the old website to the new environment. I want to work on a page by page and section by section basis, and whatever gets ready to go live I will release on the new server while keeping all other pages untouched and live on the old server. What are your recommendations?

Search engine keyword rank - easiest way to check the keywords that rank across website
What is the best keyword ranking tool you have used? I have used various tools by which I am expected to identify and input the keyword I want to track... However, recently I was introduced to Searchmetrics, which I think automatically pulls in the keywords a website ranks for, without the need for manual input from the SEO (I haven't used this tool yet, so apologies if I am incorrect!). Do any other rank trackers work like this? Thanks, Luke

How do I get the sub-domain traffic to count as sub-directory traffic without moving off of WordPress?
I want as much traffic as possible to my main site, but right now my blog lives on a blog.brand.com URL rather than brand.com/blog. What are some good solutions for getting that traffic to count as traffic to my main site if my blog is hosted on WordPress? Can I just create a sub-directory page and add a rel canonical to the blog post?

Search engine submission - Urgent
Is it necessary to submit a new site to search engines? I have a brand-new site I purchased a few days ago which I didn't think to check until after I purchased it, But it has not been indexed by Google!
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | seoman10
The domain was registered three months ago, and probably the website wouldn't have been designed until after that.
But I'm still left puzzling why the site is not indexed by Google. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.0 -
Should Site Search results be blocked from search engines?
What are the advantages & disadvantages of letting Google crawl site search results? We currently have them blocked via robots.txt, so I'm not sure if we're missing out on potential traffic. Thanks!

Evaluate the value of domain
We have a chance to purchase a domain with our main KW dot net. We are already a competitor for this KW in its other variations. This domain is currently being used as a re-direct to another site. What are the risks associated with changing domain names and how to best evaluate if this domain will even help us win that KW in Google results?
