Advice regarding Panda
-
I'd like some feedback on what would be a Panda factor(s) on http://www.duhaime.org
The site got hit fairly hard by Panda (60% drop in traffic). Since then we have:
- redesigned the site (responsive and progressive),
- reduce the average links/page to ~35 from over 100,
- Use AJAX to delay the loading of boiler plate and nav elements,
- Improved the search functionality,
- Added more content images (still in progress),
- Removed the citations section to new sub-domain, and
- 1000's of little code fixes and enhancements
The site, by nature of being a legal reference, contains many small, single topic pages. The authority and professionalism of the site demands it doesn't allow much UGC. (The law is not Social Media)
Unfortunately, this means the bulk of the page (1000+) are fairly formulaic - to format otherwise would diminish the value to the user. This doesn't hurt many individual pages as shown by the dominance the "Without Prejudice" page enjoys.
In particular, the citations section was very limited as there is not very much one can say about the 10,000+ law reports in the world. Recognizing this as valuable to lawyers but a likely "low value" target of Panda, we moved it to a sub domain and requested the old directory was removed from the index. This was done on July 28th.
Now...
I'd like some opinions on anything else that might be holding the site back.
Thank you for you time.

Time to put that legal knowledge to work! Glad I could help - let me know if you have any more questions.

Wow, you have really highlighted how far the coping of the site has gone. This site was created in '96 and many of the definitions are over 10 years old now. I can guarantee the author didn't copy the content unless cited. But, I can see how the definitions of the same thing would come out very similar.
Take http://www.poole.it/cassino/ARCHIVE/TEXTS_legal/duhaime%20online%20legal%20dictionary.htmshows
even with the single (wrong) back link, this would be competing for original content title, right?
Looks like we have to get busy with DCMA requests.
The next step for the citations is a separate domain which is a shame - Google really needs to catch up to reference sites and stop treating all pages on the web the same. Sure, the citations pages don't have to rank at the top but they shouldn't be hurting the rest of the content either.
-
- All of your glossary "Letter" pages are indexed (26 pages with content that is repeated on the individual "Word" pages). Although this is obviously not some intentional or deliberate means at spamdexing, it might appear as low quality to Google.
- Most of your legal definitions on these pages are found elsewhere on the Internet, whether they started out as your original content or not. Example: http://www.google.com/search?q=%22A+barbaric+form+of+corporal+punishment+meted+out+in+the+middle+ages+where+persons+would+be+permanently+blinded+by+the+pressing+of+hot+irons+to+the+open+eyes.%22&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a
- When you combine the above two bullet points, you have 26 pages that contain content that is duplicated on other pages throughout your domain, and then hundreds of pages that contain content that is located elsewhere on the Internet. Classic two way Panda action - duplicating your own content, and having your content duplicated by others.
- The Citations pages are really weak. I know you mentioned there's very little you can do, but really - if there is any way whatsoever to beef these pages up, they need to be. Even if these are on a subdomain, it still isn't a great thing to be associated with. It wouldn't shock me if there were negative consequences, even on a subdomain. (Although given your situation, I think it was a natural first step. It's a tricky situation. See how the move to the subdomain pans out in the next month or two - if things don't start to make a comeback, you really need to figure out a way to beef up the content.)
- A lot of your other content is copied or taken from somewhere. You need to re-write your content or get these websites to re-write theirs.
Example: http://www.duhaime.org/CrimeandSafety/LawArticle-59/Personal-Safety.aspx
Copies: http://www.google.com/search?q=%22In+most+cases+you+are+in+control+of+the+circumstances+in+which+you+place+yourself.+Just+by+being+aware+that+you+are+a+potential+victim+of+a+personal+crime+is+the+first+step+toward+prevention.%22&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a

Questions in regard to putting 2-3 keywords in a title tag.
Hi all, Here is the situation. There are two services A and B in the page. B is more like a complement to A (they have something in common). C is the umbrella term over A and B. However, our company focuses more on A (70%) than B (30%). Questions: 1. Can I rank the keyword A for the page, while the page has B? (e.g. A | brand name) Will it hurt the seo, with B being in the page? 2. If I write the title tag this way: A | B | brand name . Will A and B dilute each other? 3. How about this: **A | C | brand name **(the idea behind this: We focus on A, but also include C because we have B in the page.) Does this make any sense? I am a newbie to SEO and I realize that could be confusing. Thank you for any support and explanation.

Are these doorway pages or not? Concerned due to Panda 4.0
For a new site we're building, the Products team wants the header (let's call this Product-Header) to have links to every subsection of every section on every page. Since this is a bad idea, I want Product-Header to be coded in such a way that it doesn't appear in the code or the links are nofollow, noindex. I want to instead create static versions of these pages without the Product-Header. The homepage links to the static URL section pages, those main section pages link to static subsection pages, and so on. It's one nice silo. I am concerned though that Google won't like this due to these static pages are being created specifically for search engines. Users could click through to this static parallel site from the homepage, or they could use the dynamic URL site. This is similar to what etsy.com is doing where you can search Google for "mermaid bridal" and get this page https://www.etsy.com/market/mermaid_bridal but the dynamic version of the page does not show up. However you can search on etsy.com for " mermaid bridal" and get https://www.etsy.com/search?q=mermaid bridal&ship_to=US. Could these static versions that show up in search engines be seen as doorway pages? I know ebay.com got spanked for doorway pages and I don't want to do anything that would get this site penalized.

Regarding Infinite Scroll
Hey Moz'erz Working on a 1 page website (+ customer login and backend). The home page is done in an infinite-scroll type design where fixed side bar links will take you to the ID on page. There are 4 sections (4 ID links) on the page. In your experience would it still be best to recommend the best practice from the webmaster tools blog here; and have each ID appear as an index-able page? Just curious is there would be a big impact positive or negative or if the above mentioned pertains more so to longer infinite scroll pages. Comments and experiences are greatly welcomed!!

Any advice for best practice for mobile versions of websites?
Hi Mozzers, I am looking to develop a mobile version of one of my sites and was wondering what was considered best practice for the following: Where to host it: m.domain.com or domain.com/mobile ? Is rel='canonical' enough to avoid mobile version being indexed or should I use "noindex" on mobile version? How to handle tablets? Which screen size sees mobile version? Which sees full site version? Thanks in advance Geoff

Need some advice on choosing categories.
We have a website where we do a daily one minute video about our son who was born with Down syndrome. When I started the site I was going to do a daily video and put all of those in a category called "Noah's Minute." Cute title, but doesn't really tell anyone what it's about. (Oh what I've learned in the last year.) I was going to do no text on those video posts, just the daily one minute video. I wanted it to tell a story, in order, without me adding to it with words. Then I was going to have some other categories where I wrote information about Down syndrome. Therapy post, medical posts, best toys, parenting tips/encouragement, etc. I'm been running this site for almost a year and I now have a much better idea of the type of content I'll be posting, what people are interested in, etc. I now write content for each of the videos, and no longer group them under "Noah's Minute." If you check out some of the posts, you'll see I try to be very intentional with each posts, and try to make each one centered on a specific topic / key words. I'm now having to go through almost a year of posts that were under "Noah's Minute" and re organize them, however I'm having a problem with coming up with categories for the post. I have some of them under the category of "Therapy" since a lot of our readers are interested in checking out the different posts we do with Noah for his developmental therapy. But the other posts are much more "general" I guess. For instance a lot of our posts are just me telling our story and giving general parenting advice / encouragement. But having a category called "Parenting" seems to vague, and also every post I write could be considered "parenting." I'm wondering if someone would mind checking out some of our content, and giving me some advice on how to organize the posts. There is a lot of great info on our site, and many people ask me questions about things that are on the site, but they just didn't know was there. So I want people to find it better. Also how "detailed" do I have to be in the naming of my categories for SEO purposes? For instance, the category called "Therapy' is great for people who find our site, since it's a given that the category will be dealing with "Down Syndrome Therapy" but do I have to name the category "Down Syndrome Therapy" in order for people to find it via search? If so, that would get old quick to my readers: "Down Syndrome Therapy" "Down Syndrome Toys" Down Syndrome Books" etc.... Anyways, I'm not sure where to go from here. Thoughts, feedback, suggestions?

Does on page links have an effect on SERP rankings with PANDA
I have been doing some competitive analysis basing my company on others and have noticed a pattern. Very high ranking sites seem to have limited the internal and external on page links on their subdomains to under 100. my site has a lot of links but all are relevant and lead to unique content. I am interested to know if anyone else has noticed this pattern in changes in the SERP results. bIs google now penalizing pages with to many on site nav links? And if a full site restructure is needed to allow google to index and rank these pages or if a it is a non issue and does not need to be addressed. Panda confuses me!!!!! HELP!

Another Panda question
Hi all, Yes, it's another Panda question.... Would Panda effect an entire site or just specific pages. Many people have said that it penalizes entire sites, however, some of the questions that Google is said to have asked Panda testers seem to be page specific. What's the general consensus?? Thanks

Setup of three major retail sites.. need advice.
I recently have taken a new position responsible for three large national retail sites which are all owned by one parent organization. Through a series of acquisitions, these three major brands have been brought under one umbrella and a brand consolidation is likely not to happen within the next 2-4 years. I have a number of questions I’m hoping to get some feedback on, but first a little more background is necessary. A year ago (before my time) the three sites were over-hauled, but were designed to use one common custom CMS and all of the navigation and nearly all the content is the same (with some exceptions, such as tags, url, etc.). All of the brands have identical products and services; however, each one services a different demographic in the US. The design was intended for ease of management, but is terrible for seo. Additionally, without the geographic reference, they all compete for the same keywords. They have now begun a very large ecommerce project utilizing an ATG platform. The initial direction is to use one platform for all three brands, but keep them on separate domains and with the use of basic switching, replace nominal content such as logos and references of the brands for each of the domains. I’m concerned with this approach and would like to hear your feedback.. When optimizing a page for one keyword set, are they likely to be filtered due to dup content? The argument that management has is that all three current sites rank very well for one keyword on all three sites. They feel it won’t be an issue due to this. One option, that is currently still available, is to tri-band one ecommerce site, but it would have to be on an entirely new domain. The other three domains are very well established and are PR6s. Management, and even I, is afraid to abandon these other domains, but having a single domain would allow us to have unique content and really leverage all efforts to one domain. Thoughts? Any knowledge or thoughts what kind of impact having three domains on one ATG platform will be? Thanks much! John If you feel it will help, please message me and I can share the urls... Also, how would you handle a company blog in this case?
