Duplicate Content, Campaign Explorer & Rel Canonical

Google Advises to use Rel Canonical URL's to advise them which page with similiar information is more relevant.
You are supposed to put a rel canonical on the non-preferred pages to point back to the desired page.
How do you handle this with a product catalog using ajax, where the additional pages do not exist? An example would be:
<colgroup><col width="470"></colgroup>
|.com/productcategory.aspx?page=1
/productcategory.aspx?page=2
/productcategory.aspx?page=3
/productcategory.aspx?page=4
The page=1,2,3 and 4 do not physically exist, they are simply referencing additional products
I have rel canonical urls' on the main page www.examplesite.com/productcategory.aspx, but I am not 100% sure this is correct or how else it could be handled.
Any Ideas Pro mozzers?

Hoping for the extra points here, so here goes how we handled the problem.
The solution is a lot simpler than all the thought needed, or used by us to rationalize the answer, and it has been working beautifully. Our Google webmaster tools show constant improvement weekly without us doing any additional work.
We Canonicalized the first paginated results. ".com/productcategory.aspx" not ".com/productcategory.aspx?page=1" so now all pages link their juice back to the main page ".com/productcategory.aspx". GWT doesn't even care about setting the parameter "Page=" And we didn't include the Canonical tag for the product pages, because each product has its own link juice that we want to preserve, so that each product may "Star" as its own as a google result.
So all we did was to include a single canonical tag for the paginated category page and wala the hole solution works in GWT.

Hi Christian,
It's likely a setting in the Platinum SEO plugin related to canonical URLs. The notice from SEOmoz is just a notice letting you know they are there, and not an error.
If you have specific questions (like if your plugin and template is set up correctly), I suggest starting a new question thread and including your site's URL.

Hi! I have no idea what any of this means. I have "14 rel canonical urls" and I have never entered a "rel canonical url" on on any of my templates (are you talking about the css?)
I use "platinum seo" plugin and the sites that have the most of these errors seem to be the ones I'm using the "Socrates" template.
Help!

Hi! We're going through some of the older unanswered questions and seeing if people still have questions or if they've gone ahead and implemented something and have any lessons to share with us. Can you give an update, or mark your question as answered?
Thanks!

Damien,
I guess I was not very clear; basically I am suggesting the same thing as you in that you would use the same variable that stores the URL to pull in the canonical URL.
-
@elephantseo Would that not just point every product page to one URL if using one template?
Could you not add the canonical tag exactly the same way as you would add a unique Title or Description (that's if you have the ability for that)?
You'd have to have a database entry and when one of the particular pages loads you'd pull the desired canonical tag from the database for that 'page'.
EDIT - If you create a seperate template for each type of product then go with the template canonical URL
-
Add the rel canonical to your template so that whenever the ajax creates the new URL it already has the rel canonical pointing to the preferred page.

Should I use a rel=canonical to the home page
Hi guys, I have a site where the homepage is ranking for the term 'industrial flooring' around position 30 and the actual level 2 industrial flooring page is ranking well below at around position 60. I'm happy for the homepage to rank for this term and would like to see it improve, so here are my questions: 1: Is the existence of the level 2 page preventing the homepage from ranking higher due to keyword cannibalization etc.? 2: Would the use of the rel=canonical tag pointing from the level 2 page to the home page have a positive or negative impact on the homepage's rankings for 'industrial flooring'? 3: Is there anything else I'm missing? Greatly appreciated.

How do I use public content without being penalized for duplication?
The NHTSA produces a list of all recalls for automobiles. In their "terms of use" it states that the information can be copied. I want to add that to our site, so there is an up-to-date list for our audience to see. However, I'm just copying and pasting. I'm allowed to according to NHTSA, but google will probably flag it right? Is there a way to do this without being penalized? Thanks, Ruben

Multiply domains and duplicate content confusion
I've just found out that a client has multiple domains which are being indexed by google and so leading me to worry that they will be penalised for duplicate content. Wondered if anyone could confirm a) are we likely to be penalised? and b) what should we do about it? (i'm thinking just 301 redirect each domain to the main www.clientdomain.com...?). Actual domain = www.clientdomain.com But these also exist: www.hostmastr.clientdomain.com www.pop.clientdomain.com www.subscribers.clientdomain.com www.www2.clientdomain.com www.wwwww.clientdomain.com ps I have NO idea how/why all these domains exist I really appreciate any expertise on this issue, many thanks!

Problems with ecommerce filters causing duplicate content.
We have an ecommerce website with 700 pages. Due to the implementation of filters, we are seeing upto 11,000 pages being indexed where the filter tag is apphended to the URL. This is causing duplicate content issues across the site. We tried adding "nofollow" to all the filters, we have also tried adding canonical tags, which it seems are being ignored. So how can we fix this? We are now toying with 2 other ideas to fix this issue; adding "no index" to all filtered pages making the filters uncrawble using javascript Has anyone else encountered this issue? If so what did you do to combat this and was it successful?

Should I use rel=canonical on similar product pages.
I'm thinking of using rel=canonical for similar products on my site. Say I'm selling pens and they are al very similar. I.e. a big pen in blue, a pack of 5 blue bic pens, a pack of 10, 50, 100 etc. should I rel=canonical them all to the best seller as its almost impossible to make the pages unique. (I realise the best I realise these should be attributes and not products but I'm sure you get my point) It seems sensible to have one master canonical page for bic pens on a site that has a great description video content and good images plus linked articles etc rather than loads of duplicate looking pages. love to hear thoughts from the Moz community.

Duplicate page content query
Hi forum, For some reason I have recently received a large increase in my Duplicate Page Content issues. Currently it says I have over 7,000 duplicate page content errors! For example it says: Sample URLs with this Duplicate Page Content http://dikelli.com.au/accessories/gowns/news.html http://dikelli.com.au/accessories/news.html
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | sterls
http://dikelli.com.au/gallery/dikelli/gowns/gowns/sale_gowns.html However there are no physical links to any of these page on my site and even when I look at my FTP files (I am using Dreamweaver) these directories and files do not exist. Can anyone please tell me why the SEOMOZ crawl is coming up with these errors and how to solve them?0 -
What is the best way to allow content to be used on other sites for syndication without taking the chance of duplicate content filters
Cookstr appears to be syndicating content to shape.com and mensfitness.com a) They integrate their data into partner sites with an attribution back to their site and skinned it with the partners look. b) they link the image back to their image hosted on cookstr c) The page does not have microformats or as much data as their own page does so their own page is better SEO. Is this the best strategy or is there something better they could be doing to safely allow others to use our content, we don't want to share the content if we're going to get hit for a duplicate content filter or have another site out rank us with our own data. Thanks for your help in advance! their original content page: http://www.cookstr.com/recipes/sauteacuteed-escarole-with-pancetta their syndicated content pages: http://www.shape.com/healthy-eating/healthy-recipes/recipe/sauteacuteed-escarole-with-pancetta
