  • I'm familiar with ranking factors and can get a pretty good idea of whether going for a keyword is realistic by looking at the seomoz keyword difficulty tool. As well as the % score it has a lot of useful information. There was an seomoz article a while ago that detailed how 100 or so experts determine a keyword's competitiveness. Does anybody have the link? Or just as good, any useful guides to interpreting the data to gauge how possible it is to compete? Thanks

  • I write for a blog that Google probably "likes" at this point because we update so frequently and get a decent amount of traffic. Sometimes this happens and it has always been puzzling to me: Let's use an example. Say I write a blog called "How to eat spaghetti." For the next few days, we will get a ton of traffic for people who type "spaghetti." But when I check us on rank trackers we are nowhere to be found for that term. What is happening here? Sometimes the traffic will all be international and located in some random city in Africa or something. Any thoughts? Super confused by this. We have gotten lots of traffic for extremely competitive words because of this, but it only lasts a couple days.

  • Hey all, As always thanks in advance to any help given. So I think we haven't done a bad job, but I know there is always more that can be done with conversions. We have a website which provides guestlist to clubs in London, we are competitive on our keywords and ppc and get the clicks through with very very relevant adverts and meta descriptions.... The questions is 'How do I improve our conversion rate on page?' The said pages are setup like the examples below: www.capitalalist.com/movida-guestlist/ www.capitalalist.com/chinawhite-guestlist/ www.capitalalist.com/mahiki-guestlist/ The conversion comes when the click 'join guestlist' and fill out the form. Any help with be GREATLY appreciated!

  • Hello, I have two PPC related questions that hopefully someone could help with. My client complains that the majority of leads he is getting are disqualified - mainly due to fake contact info left on the landing page. This happens both in the Display and Search campaigns. We are getting a good number of leads and we checked with Google that there is no fraud involved. What can be done about this? Has anyone encountered that kind of complaint and how did you deal with it? Can you recommend any tools, other than Google's Ad Planner to find good placements for a display campaign? Another client of mine is selling B2B services such as document destruction etc. Where can I find, for example, a list of placements frequented by people from the insurance business? I never had a problem finding placements for B2C but B2B seems to be a lot different. Any insight will be greatly appreciated! Thanks, Michal

  • Hi guys, Is there any way to install a FB conversion script for their PPC (in the same way as the shopping directories use)? I know this was possible about 1.5-2 years ago via a feature they have released in Beta at that time, but this seem to no longer be a choice. There is nothing in the FB help, I found no such option in their settings and the FB support does not answer (what;s new here 🙂 ) We can always try alternatives - as Google Analytics or Prosper202 ... but this time we would prefer FB scripts if possible. Thanks in advance T

  • Hi everybody, At the moment i'm creating several webshops and websites with the same layout, so visitors can recognize the websites are from the same company. • Hi, I've been reading lots of great stuff on location optimisation and have picked up some new SEO knowledge on this area. Usually I target UK wide terms but this is a new beast for me. From what I have read if you was going after 'Ironing Services Essex' you would setup google places, include your address across your website and submit to local directories using the same uniformed address. BUT what happens if you live in a town 10 mins outside of Essex, your address doesn't contain Essex or Essex postcode on your website, the Google places pin is outside of the Essex area etc, well hopefully you get the idea. Basically Lets say your company is 10 mins from the area you want to rank for, it's easy for you to get into the location and do business but your address is different to the location you want to target because you live in a village 10 mins outside of the area (city) you want to target.

  • I am planning on setting up a blog in the next couple months.  We would like to have 10 different categories that professionals can write about and submit articles.  Any suggestions on which blogging software to put on the site.  So far I have heard of WordPress and Joomla. (Not sure which is the best version)  We want it to maybe have the bloggers logo or pictures, date, etc. None of us have had any experience with this so we needed some input. I have been reading everywhere that blogging is huge for SEO and so I just wanted to improve ours plus maybe drive more traffic with a high level blog for professionals. Any ideas or even books that I should go purchase to study up.  When we do this it would be great to get it set up properly from the get go. 🙂 Boo

  • Hi Thank you for taking the time to review my question. My client ranks at Position 1 for: maine moose tour They also rank at Position 6 for "moose tour" (Position 4 if you enclose in quotes) They rank Position 3 for: maine wildlife touring. My problem is, I created one page for both "moose tour" and "wildlife tour." Here it is: http://www.neoc.com/moose-wildlife-tours.php Here's what I think I should do.  Please feel free to critique my strategy and/or suggest another.  I would greatly appreciate it. 1. Create a new page: wildlife-tours.php (or, should it be wildlife-tours-maine.php??) 2. Rename and 301 redirect moose-wildlife-tours.php to moose-tours.php (again...do I put "maine" in the file/url?) 3. Modify the content for the new moose-tours.php page to include more instances of "moose tour" and 4. Change to all moose related images (no deer or whatever else)  Update "alt" tags accordingly. What about "title" tags?   Do they help?  I think so.  For usabiliy.
They're like automatic captions that you'd normall see in a newspaper. 5. Link to the Wildlife Tour page 6. Create more content. If I do this, does it kill my "wildlife tour" ranking since I'm creating a new page? Also, I buy all the AdWords clicks for pretty much all the "moose" and "wildlife" tour traffic except between midnight and 6 am.  In regard to QS per keyword, I have 6 at a QS of 10, 3 at 7, 5 at 6 and 6 at 5. Thanks again. Eric

  • Hey guys, I've always wondered about this. Say I'm targeting the keyword "how to sell your house" but I find it a bit bland or generic and my client actually offers a service more in line with "how to sell your house quickly" - say that's their USP for example. I still want to rank for the broader version however, because far fewer people are searching for the "quickly" version - and it stands to reason that if searchers can solve the same problem quickly, they'll want that version of the solution anyway. So will adding the word "quickly" to the end of the keyword I'm targeting (and using that in my Title, H1, URL, description tags etc) make Google see my client's page/site as less relevant to a broader search term like the more generic "how to sell your house", that I'm trying to rank for? Thanks 🙂

  • Hello, We created a google+ page for our website and we would like to know what's best for SEO purposes. We've put +1 buttons on our website and when you use them it give a +1 to our website's url. Some other websites on the other hand make the button give a +1 to their website's page on Google + like this for instance: https://plus.google.com/u/0/113493854651753327245/posts So basically the number of +1s on the Google+ page increases. Which one is best to have my website rank higher for its keywords? Thanks for your help 🙂

  • Hi, I'm new to SEOmoz and just diving into it. I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed. I use Miva Merchant as my storefront interface. SEMOz is returning a bunch of duplicate page content and duplicate page titles and I can't figure out what to do about it. It seems it may have something to do with Miva shortlinks. I click on the dup URL's in SEMOz and it brings me to a dead page. I can't figure out where it's coming from. I know without seeing the actual information it'll probably be tough to help me but any suggestions would be appreciated. I try to fix them and come to a point (after about three hours of getting nowhere) it becomes too frustrating. Thanks!

  • Hi, So we've heard all the updates from Google lately: don't get involved in buying links, link networks etc etc. My question is, does buying a link from one of the traditional large directories get penalised by Google? If I was to buy a link from Best of the Web - http://botw.org/ - would this be a waste of time? Would I get penalised? If we are only buying 2-3 high value links for our site from very high quality directories, do you think this is fine? I'm asking because BOTW is having a sale today (tomorrow US time), half price submission. Thanks! Edit: Paid directories such as this are still featured on SEOmoz - http://www.seomoz.org/directories - so I'm thinking they still have value if used sparingly?

  • I have been watching Google+ and see lots of SEOs sharing ideas and enjoying their circles.   However, I have not seen anything outside of the webmaster community that I would hold up as an example of business engagement - and certainly nothing that seems to be producing a good ROI for a business. It seems to me that everyone outside of the webmaster community is on FaceBook and doesn't give a hoot about Google+.  And, since FaceBook  has the massive amount of people why should I open an outpost in the poorly populated Google+? I am not looking for Google+ evangelist answers.  Just looking to hear if anybody anywhere has found Google+ to be a better use of their time than  FaceBook and working on your website. I do believe that using Google+ as an author verification platform is a good use of your time if you have valuable content - mainly because it helps your visibility in the SERPs.  Beyond that I am looking for validation. Anybody want to point to something good happening or telling a success story? Thanks!

  • Hi SEOmoz fans, Hang on a minute, I sound like Rand, watching to many WBF's. Ok let me start, I am currently doing all the marketing for a website which has both .co.uk & .ie due to legal reasons, the website and .co.uk & .ie have all the same content and even when I am writing new pages, which is on a regular basis I make sure both are being updated, anyway after all the research there should not be an issue with this (duplicate content) as Google recognizes that it's the same domain etc, however I was really ranking well for a specific keyword no.5 , very competitive now the page being ranked for that keyword is a .pdf in the site but is ranked no.68. Now, I thought this is very strange as you can imagine, I never do any black hit linkbuilding or anything like that, that's a NO NO for me, anyway i put the URL which was ranking well in Google into the Google search box, and yes it appeared, so no sign the URL has been banned, however when I paste in the first few paragraphs of that page which was ranking well in Google.co.uk into the Google search box it's the .ie website which appears not the .co.uk Can anyone help me out, advice etc Kind Regards

  • Hi guys, this is my first ever post on SEOMoz (woo!) I have researched and I did see someone else ask something similar but I still wasn't clear, so i hope this question is not considered a duplicate and can go on to help other people too Enough waffle For various reasons I am moving our company blog to startup a personal blog instead and I have bought a couple of appropriate domain names in a firstname/lastname format for the new blog, basically: myname.me and iammyname.com My question is, which would you consider 'better', if either, for SEO? (bonus point: are there any other non-SEO factors I should consider?) Obviously the second name is longer, but it is a .com and I hear all the time that .com is king and .me is waaaay behind Ultimately I want to rank #1 for my name If it was your site and your blog and you had my choices which one would you go for? Many thanks for your help. I'm looking forward to being part of the SEOMoz community and learning a lot from you guys, cheers, Nick

  • Having just moved into a position where an Ecommerce site is now a big part of my responsibilities I'm looking to get up to speed on the topic (been a while since I worked on a shop). Site is Magento based. I'd also like any recommended books on broader analytics and using/reporting data. Obviously finding books on these subjects isn't difficult, I'd just like mozers thoughts on any that are particularly good and more important still relevant ie fairly recently published. Quite broad topics these I know but open to any or all suggestions - however not too worried about covering wider SEO, more 'technical' guide style is what I'm interested in. Couldn't really find any threads on books in general so should be an interesting topic (I hope!) Thanks in advance for any help and suggestions.

  • We're going to be running our mobile site on the same domain and generating content for users on mobile devices with style sheets (will not have m.domain). The content on our URLs will be the exact same. My question is if we need to create a mobile XML Sitemap to submit to the search engines. Do we need to create the Sitemap, that will contain the exact same URLs as our non-mobile Sitemap, and just include <mobile><mobile>tags around the URLs? Or do we need to create a mobile Sitemap at all to alert the search engines that we have mobile content?</mobile></mobile> Thanks!

  • I have a client who offers residential and commercial services. We are dividing up the site into two sections that distinguish between these services and the clients. On the homepage, we ask site visitors to first choose from the Commercial or Residential services. I don't want to have any main navigation options on the homepage because they will change depending on whether you select the commercial option or the residential. Will this hurt the site in terms of SEO? Are there any suggestions of how to structure the home nav so it is not confusing to the visitor, but won't hurt the optimization of the site? Thank you.

  • Hi there! There's a new platform on the web which says that it can crawl on the web to get the best content around social media and blogs in order to allow the developer of website "x" to public this content on their websites (with all rights reserved - that make me believe that it generates automatically rel="cannonical" tags). http://techcrunch.com/2012/04/18/scribit-launch/ http://www.scribit.com/ I aways heard that all kind of automatic content applications suck, and my fist impression about this one was the same. But my business partner found it really interesting, mostly because we have a small team to generate constant great content. So I said to him that automatically generated content commonly suck in any case, and google sometime will find that our blog has 1kk rel="canonnical" tags for every post and they might find it suspect. Anyway he asked me to research more about this specific platform and I wanna know what you guys think about it. Forget speech errors. English is not my native language. Regards.

  • Our shop site has a 3 tier drop down mega-menu so it's easy to find your way to anything from anywhere. It contains about 150 links and probably 300 words of text. We also have a more context-driven single layer of sub-category navigation as well as breadcrumbs on our category pages. You can get to every product and category page without using the drop down mega-menu. Although the mega-menu is a helpful tool for customers, it means that every single page in our shop has an extra 150 links on it that go to stuff that isn't necessarily related or relevant to the page content. This means that when viewed from the context of a crawler, rather than a nice tree like crawling structure, we've got more of an unstructured mesh where everything is linked to everything else. I'd like to hide the mega-menu links from being picked up by a crawler, but what's the best way to do this? I can add a nofollow to all mega-menu links, but are the links still registered as page content even if they're not followed? It's a lot of text if nothing else. Another possibility we're considering is to set the mega-menu to only populate with links when it's main button is hovered over. So it's not part of the initial page load content at all. Or we could use a crude yet effective system we have used for some other menus we have of base encoding the content inline so it's not readable by a spider. What would you do and why? Thanks, James

  • We have a popular blog, but SEOmoz analytics is telling us that theblog  homepage has greater than 100 links and this needs to be addressed. One very big source of links on the blog homepage is the tag cloud. Can tag clouds be a source of link juice dilution? If so, is should we consider either removing the tag cloud altogether (not essential to the site) or consider doing no-follows? Thanks.
