New linkbuilding: If networks are useless, and I need high volume through a 1-man team, what's the best option?

I work for an online retailer, and we have thousands of product pages and our vertical for content is brutal -- half of them are owned by our competitors. Are there any new linkbuilding strategies that can be done through a 1-man team? I'm not talking about bots or traditional link networks. Our current strat revolves around the following: 1. Link prospecting through buzzstream tools and singular contacts 2. Finding bloggers/vloggers, sending product and having them send backlinks to our homepage level with their reviews (slow turnaround, low juice). 3. Syndicating our videos through multiple avenues. 4. Being active on social. We need to gain more authority outside of simple content building. Are there any alternatives to link networks to optimize build outs via a 1-man team? Many thanks!

Blog Commenting good or bad?

I spend a good amount of time on SEO forums and I found a thread about building links within comments.. I personally don't see how putting my keyword in my name place and linking it to my site will benefit me, I feel like google is already on to this and no one is going to click on it. Is this a waste of time?

Problem generating backlinks

Hello everyone, Over the past couple of days I have been using a variety of different free and paid programs to check how many backlinks I have. I have used at least 15 different ones, SEOmoz is the newest and am awaiting those results. All but one of those programs have said that I have 0 backlinks. The one said I have 11. The thing is...over the past month I have submitted my site to over 500 PR0 directories, 250+ PR3-PR7 directories, have made well over 75 article submissions to over 20 websites(almost all of them were approved and up and running, and some of these websites have a PR of 7), a couple dozen Press Releases, set up profiles linking to my site on over 50 forums, set up profiles linking to my site on a variety of different Web 2.0 sites, and still nothing. I have been doing this every day for over a month. Anyone have any ide?

SERPS different based on location of search even with non-personalization

Hello Mozzers, Our agency's website, www.kenta.ro - ranked for a long time at #1 for "ann arbor seo" and similar keywords. For the past several (4-5) months we've been sitting around #5. My guess was that this was Google playing around with the results but I'm not sure why we have been at this position for such a long time. I have a vpn that I use for checking rankings overseas and if I connect to a server in Chicago, LA, Ontario, etc we show up as #1 - only when you search for "ann arbr seo" in our area do we get a lower ranking. All rank checking programs including seomoz show us at the #1 position because of this. What this means for us is that all of the traffic we target with this keyword sees the poor result, while the rest of the world sees the great result (should they search for it). How can we ensure that our target market finds us at #1 like the rest of the world does? Thank you in advance. weabi.png

How can I prevent duplicate content between www.page.com/ and www.page.com

SEOMoz's recent crawl showed me that I had an error for duplicate content and duplicate page titles. This is a problem because it found the same page twice because of a '/' on the end of one url. e.g. www.page.com/ vs. www.page.com My question is do I need to be concerned about this. And is there anything I should put in my htaccess file to prevent this happening. Thanks!

Advantages of wordpress over dreamweaver

I have a site that I have built with dreamweaver (local service business not a lot of new content needing to be added) and I am curious how much of an advantage for me converting it to wordpresss would be. I see that cs5 works with wordpress and that lynda.com has a tutorial on integrating the two. I would like to integrate a blog into my site, but it is not totally critical that I do so. I would just like to hear what some of you experienced users have to say about the advantages of wordpress vs dreamweaver from an SEO prospective.

Short Description, How Short?

I made a few changes in my site to show the products listing in List format instead of grid format, in format mode it was only showing the name, but in list mode it also shows a short description that I think should be benefical for SEO because it might require words related to the product itself. Local service site link building

I have a local service site http://winecountrycarpet.com/ and I have been link building as much as possible for my landing pages (which aren't local to my city, but are within 20 miles). I would like to keep my link building as above board and white hat as possible (so i do a lot of forum sigs and links in do follow forum in my industry) I do not seem to be seeing any results though. My pages are on the first page for their targeted keywords, but I think this has more to do with onsite SEO and non competitive keywords. I am wondering if anyone can recommend any strategies that I might find more effective. I have thought about leaving blog comments on do follow blog's but it just seems so spammy its hard to imagine it working. I am open to any ideas.

Internal links to low value pages

Hi, We're doing a big content update on our product pages and I'm looking for some advice about our internal linking. In a nutshell, the current design we're using links out from every product page (i.e. plants) to a set of accessory pages (i.e. things to help you plant the plants). The screenshot shows how this works. The accessories we sell are a very small part of our business and don't attract significant or valuable search traffic. It's the plant pages that pull in the visits and make the money.
The reason for all these links to accessory pages is for usabilty & to reduce the volume of support calls about accessories (we get a lot of those). So my concern is that by linking out to these relatively low value accessory pages from all of our plant product pages, we will be spilling link juice from all our important pages to a small set of unimportant ones. Should I be concerned about this and if so, what should I do differently? I have considered: Making an intermediary page, listing the relevant accessories, so that each product page links to one intermediary page, which then links to all the accessories. Using nofollow on the accessory page links - there is so much info out there about this, much of it conflicting, that I just don't know if that's a good or bad idea. Using some kind of java-based pop-up box to list the accessory links that will hide the links from spiders. Linking back from the accessory pages to the relevant product sub-category pages to loop the flow of link juice. All ideas welcome zoBgC

Random 302 Redirect (Wordpress CMS)

So this new project that i am working on is a redesigned CMS site using Wordpress (php based). Before i started on the project they made a few major updates that include: Changed from ID based URLS to SEO friendly URLS Added multiple languages in directories www.domain.com/en www.domain.com/fr www.domain.com/de etc... Due to the new languages they wanted to have the previous home page, www.domain.com, redirect to the proper language based on their IP address. Currently they are using a 301 redirect through a php header. So if i was visiting the site from my hometown of Cleveland, Ohio and i type www.domain.com into the browser. I would automatically redirect to www.domain.com/en and i would have the option to switch languages if needed. The issue: When i first added their site into SEOMoz the crawl returned a large amount of 302 redirects coming from their old homepage www.domain.com. So i took a look at the header calls using IE's webmaster tools and Firebug in Firefox. In both profilers it showed the same problem. Before the 301 header redirect there was a 302 redirect called first When viewing the response header it mentioned an x-pingback of some file that didn't even exist on the site: www.domain.com/xmlrpc.php This is obviously a huge issue because any link value from the old homepage will be lost due to the 302 not passing the value. I have tried search the almighty Google for help but it has gotten me no where. I have a hunch it is something to do with Wordpress but that is based on nothing but my gut. Any help is greatly appreciated. I got to get that 302 gone or changed to a 301 🙂 Regards - Kyle

Affects of vanity domains?

Hi there! My client's domain name is his name, let's say (www,myname.com) because he is well-known in his industry. He is a physician with a very specific specialty and organic competition is fierce for the most relevant keyword to his specialty. A domain has just become available that includes the keyword. If we bought the domain, how could we use it to our advantage? I'm confused about redirecting, etc., with this type of situation. Am i making any sense here? Help! Thanks. 🙂

Best way to migrate to a new URL structure

Hello everyone, We’re changing our URL structure from something like this: example.com/index.php?language=English To something like this: example.com**/english/**index.php The change is implemented with mod_rewrite so all the old URLs can still work We have hundreds of thousands of pages that are currently indexed with the old URL structure What’s the best way to get Google to rapidly update its index and to maintain as much ranking as possible? 301 redirect all the old URLs to the new equivalent format? If we detect that the URL is in an old format, render the page with a canonical tag pointing to the new equivalent format as well as adding a noindex, nofollow tag? Something else? Guest blogging and duplicate content

I have a guest blog prepared and several sites I can submit it to, would it be considered duplicate content if I submitted one guest blog post to multipul blogs? and if so this content is not on my site but is linking to it. What will google do? Lets say 5 blogs except the same content and post it up, I understand that the first blog to have it up will not be punished, what about the rest of the blogs? can they get punished for this duplicate content? can I get punished for having duplicate content linking to me?

Video Sitemap, Video Location

I'm a link builder, so some of this stuff on-page stuff is out of my comfort zone. I've got a client who I'm doing a video sitemap for, as well as Schema integration. One of the requirements on the video sitemap is video location. They're hosting all of their videos privately at Vimeo, and embedding them on their website. Is there a URL that Vimeo has for engines, because the primary URL on Vimeo is blocked because of their permissions (private). Any suggestions on a work-around on this? Again, I'm a link builder and out of my comfort zone, so I apologize for the dumb question 🙂

Hi guys, My site ranking report says that I've gone from being 1-20 for a variety of keywords in Google UK to not in the top 50. When I do a search myself I see that my site remains where it previously was (between 1-20). How reliable is the site ranking reporting on a weekly basis? Is it best to look at it monthly?

Multiple KW's , on-page and anchor text

Hello, For each page on my site, I've targeted one primary keyword and three to four secondary keywords. All of the keywords variants are tightly themed. With some on-page, I've ranked page two or three for all of the keywords and many are starting to convert based on Analytics data. Each page scores an "A" using the SEOmoz KW targeting tool for the "primary keyword only". For secondary keywords, I've only included words but not the complete keyword. For example, if the primary keyword is "blue green widgets" and the secondary keyword is "get blue green widgets", I've included the word "get" throughout the copy to target the secondary keyword. My questions are... Should I include each secondary keyword once in the copy and not just the word "get" for example? Just wondering if there is a better approach to target all of the keywords via on-page. When getting links to each page, how would you vary the anchor text to target all of the keywords, primary and secondary? Thanks!

Best way to redirect 3 sites to 1 new one.

Hi All We currently have 3 old sites that have tones of content. Due to brand/business consolidation we have merge all 3 to produce 1 website. The new site contains all the old content from the old 3. So, I know I need to 301 redirect all the old content from the previous sites to the equivelent content on the new sites but am confused how you do this with 3 domains? One of the domains is being replaced with the new site. So I have: www.domain1.co.uk www.domain2.co.uk www.domain3.co.uk All the content for all the sites have been imported into a new site and any duplicate content issues havce been resolved. Internal file extension canonicalization

Ok no doubt this is straightforward, however seem to be finding to hard to find a simple answer; our websites' internal pages have the extension .html. Trying to the navigate to that internal url without the .html extension results in a 404. The question is; should a 401 be used to direct to the extension-less url to future proof? and should internal links direct to the extension-less url for the same reason? Hopefully that makes sense and apologies for what I believe is a straightforward answer;

I have a ton of "duplicated content", "duplicated titles" in my website, solutions?

hi and thanks in advance, I have a Jomsocial site with 1000 users it is highly customized and as a result of the customization we did some of the pages have 5 or more different types of URLS pointing to the same page. Google has indexed 16.000 links already and the cowling report show a lot of duplicated content. this links are important for some of the functionality and are dynamically created and will continue growing, my developers offered my to create rules in robots file so a big part of this links don't get indexed but Google webmaster tools post says the following: "Google no longer recommends blocking crawler access to duplicate content on your website, whether with a robots.txt file or other methods. If search engines can't crawl pages with duplicate content, they can't automatically detect that these URLs point to the same content and will therefore effectively have to treat them as separate, unique pages. A better solution is to allow search engines to crawl these URLs, but mark them as duplicates by using the rel="canonical" link element, the URL parameter handling tool, or 301 redirects. Which metrics are better for linkback when it comes to PA vs DA?

Which metrics would be more attractive for receiving a linkback from, at least in theory, from the examples below? Gettting a link from a high PA page on a low DA site or gettting a link from a low PA page but on a high DA site, or something in the middle with both (assuming all other factors similar). SEOMOZ Crawler unicode bug

for the last couple of weeks the SEOMOZ crawls my homepage only and gets 4xx error for most of the URL's. the crawler have no issues with English url's only with the unicode(Hebrew) ones. this is what is see in the csv export for the crawl (one sample) : http://www.funstuff.co.il/׳ž׳¡׳™׳‘׳×-׳¨׳•׳•׳§׳•׳× 404 text/html; charset=utf-8 you can see that the URL is Gibberish please help.

How to quickly up your PA/DA?

Okay people, so far i've actually tried a lot of things and analised a lot of data provided by SEOMoz and i already made a lot of changes. Still one of my competitors stands on the number 1 position in Google. Their page ranks F for the keyword and my page ranks A. I can only come to the conclusion that there is another part that plays his part here. So i basicly found this informatie: Page Grade: My site: Grade A Competitor: Grade F Page Authority (PA): My site: 49/100 Competitor: 62/100 Domain Authority (DA): My Site: 39/100 Competitor: 55/100 Total Links: My Site: 1188 Competitor: 8250 FB Shares: My Site: 15 Competitor: 14 FB Likes: My Site: 2 Competitor: 1 Tweets: My Site:6 Competitor: 7 Google+: My Site: 3 Competitor: 0 I already made some adjustments to my facebook fan page so it can recieve more likes then before. I think the main issue is located in the PA en DA factors. What do I really need

Hello all. I’m new to this SEO stuff and after reading much, remain very, very confused as to what I really need. First, I’ll say I’m here because I have been impressed with the posts and the general professional approach that seem to exist on Seomoz. My problem is that I run a small business that’s not doing so well and I do know that my website needs to be found. With this being the case I contacted an SEO company and on being given a price for 12 months of service, almost feel of my chair as this would clear me out. This, without any guarantee. Due to the above I am now considering having a go at the SEO myself. However, this leads to another problem in that, given it appears I need so many online services, it again becomes very expensive for one man and his single website. I have seen much written about Seomoz, Raven (something I’m trying now), Seospyglass and Seo Powersuite (a few reports appear bad) and between these and other possibly lesser well known brands leaves me wondering what I need to achieve improved website visibility. Does not one product exist that can help the smaller business without breaking the bank, and if not, what might be the best approach to tackle this problems cost effectively. I am aware that Seomoz has it’s followers, but having said this, it appears that a good degree of openness and honesty is provided here. Your comments would be most appreciated.

I have restricted around 1,500 links which are links to retailers website and links that affiliate links accorsing to webmaster tools Is this the right approach as I thought it would affect the link juice? or should I take the no follow out of the restricted by robots.txt file

Keyword Canabalisation and my solution

Hi. According to one guy, in this thread: http://www.seomoz.org/q/good-seo-titles, the Meta Title, H1 Tag Title on the product page, and the category listing pages should be different to avoid keyword canabilisation. One problem I noticed in my website after reading about this topic, is that all my printers have the keyword sentence :"refurbished printer", yes 99% of the products are refurbished but in that way according to the answer in the above post I am competing against self, too many pages (1000) with the same keywords on it. So I decided to make some changes and I I would like to know the opinion of the experts here, I did this only for one product, then I would of course need to this for lots of products. 1. In the product page itself, I removed the condition from the name of the product, instead I put the template, NAME - MODEL -CONDITION. 3. How to make partnerships with quality sites

I have a small group of insurance related blogs and sites (20). I have been creating useful articles and linked them to my main site. ex. (multiplecarinsurance.net, decisivewebsites.com). I have been sending email to sites that i linked, but I'm never sure if the emails is getting to the right person (webmaster vs sales). And some other time I cant even get and email address. Is there better place to find partners?. I was thinking that maybe there is an internet marketing club, where people openly create and develop partnerships.

Lowercase Company Name - Impact on Rankings?

A company who spells their name in all lower case, uses their name spelled exactly this way in titles & meta descriptions & throughout all of their site's content pages - will it affect rankings (particularly since the company name isn't a recognised word)? For example, let's say the company is called "twintrest" Which <title>would be better: <ul> <li>A) Twintrest - It's Like a Twitter & Pinterest Cocktail or</li> <li>B) twintrest - It's Like a Twitter & Pinterest Cocktail</li> </ul> I am leaning towards "A" because the crawler would recognise "Twintrest" at least as a noun, where as in B it could be misconstrued as a spelling mistake. Also, in content it would need to be italicised right? So both these would be ok: <ul> <li>You should use Twintrest because it rocks. or</li> <li>You should use twintrest because it rocks.</li> </ul> But not: <ul> <li>You should use twintrest because it rocks.</li> </ul> Is it worth pointing out? I've noticed that jcpenny spell their name in lowercase and use this format in their meta tags, however, they are a well established brand. Is there any evidence to suggest that lowercase may even be advantageous since a lot of searches are carried out in lowercase?</title>

Removing important section of website, safely

Hi Mozzers, It's been requested that a top level page on a website I'm working on should be removed. It concerns me firstly because there are some nice links coming into that page. I'm also worried because website director has suggested the menu option for that page should simply be removed from all navigation, so you can't find the 'removed' page via his website, but it remains as an indexed page passing linkjuice to website. Is that a risky approach from an SEO perspective? What's the best approach to this? Thanks in advance! Luke

Once duplicate content found, worth changing page or forget it?

Hi, the SEOmoz crawler has found over 1000 duplicate pages on my site. The majority are based on location and unfortunately I didn't have time to add much location based info. My question is, if Google has already discovered these, determined they are duplicate, and chosen the main ones to show on the SERPS, is it worth me updating all of them with localalized information so Google accepts the changes and maybe considers them different pages? Or do you think they'll always be considered duplicates now?

Member request pages, indexed or no indexed?

We run a service website and basically users of the site post their request to get certain items fixed/serviced. Through Google Analytics we have found that we got lots of traffic to these request pages from people searching for those particular items. E.g. A member's request page: "Cost to fix large Victorian oven" has got many visits from searchers searching for "large Victorian oven". The traffic to these pages is about 40% of our Google organic traffic but didn't covert to more users/requests well and has roughly 67% bounce rate. So my question is: should we keep these pages indexed and if yes what can we do to improve the conversion rate/reduce bounce rate? Many thanks guys. David
