  • I have a client that bought a link for his site on a non related site with the anchor text for main KW. That site brought over 1 million links to my client's site. Now what should i do? Should i let the link there? Or should i remove it? The age of the link is more than 1 year, and the link is placed in top menu, under the header.

  • One of our sites is for a local Promotional Products company that focuses on local big businesses to set up accounts with. We are trying to grow our customer base with this site through use of a PPC campaign, but are unsure of where to send them. We were thinking about a page with content about what we do and our contact information, or putting together videos with this information to send them to. Does anyone have any advice for a killer landing page that not only is good for getting conversions for promotional products through PPC, but also could get us organic traffic? Thanks in advance for the help!

  • Hi Forum, This is a two-part question. The first is: "what may be the cause of some rank declines?" and the second is "how do I bring them back up when the indexed page is the homepage?" Over the last week I noticed some declines in several of my top keywords, many of which point to the site's homepage. The site itself is an eCommerce site, which had less visits last week than normal (holidays it seems, since the data jibes with key dates). Can a decline in traffic cause ranking declines? Any other ideas of where to look? Secondly, for those keywords that link to the homepage, how do we bring these back up since a homepage can't be optimized for every single keyword? We sell yoga products and can't have a homepage that is optimized for keywords like "yoga mat," "yoga blocks," "yoga pilates clothing," and several others, as these are our category pages' keywords. Any thoughts? Thanks!

  • I read in the Google+ Guidelines that running a contest, sweepstakes or other forms of contest is against the rules for Google+ However I have seen a few contests going such as share this with your friends to get entered to win.  How is Google enforcing this rule? My company runs product giveaways each month on Facebook but I did not know if I would get banned for posting a link to it or building content around it on the Brand Page. I figured I would ask before I get in trouble. Thx

  • We have the co.uk and com.au ccTLDS and currently operate out of the UK only but plans are in place for Australia. We can't get hold of the .org or .com so it has to be the ccTLD. I want to use the same site for both countries and either host 2 identical sites (same content) or 1 site with different domain names + meta tags for the 2 countries. Whats the best way to make this happen without screwing things up?

  • I have a client who will be changing their domain name from www.brand.co.uk to www.brandglobal.com. There are concerns however that this might affect the searches for brand terms and variants. Hence, there is a suggestion for going for www.brand-global.com. I’m aware that search engines are smart enough to discern the brand name in most cases, but I’m wary if it would impact highly on the brand search terms and would it be a better option to go for www.brand-global.com instead of www.brandglobal.com? Any advice (or reference to discussions around this) would be much appreciated. Thanks

  • We have an international webshop with languages in the URLs. Our URLs are now set up as follows: http://thermalunderwear.eu/eng/category/product Now, we know that there's some kind of strange redirect problem causing problems with our indexation, this is a technical issue that should be fixed soon. But whether this is the cause of some other strange problems, I do not know. I'd be happy with any help/advice/tips. 1. The SEOmoz site crawler starts at http://thermalunderwear.eu. This currently does not yet redirect to http://thermalunderwear.eu/eng like we want it to, but all the links on the page do include the default language code. So all links on the page are http://thermalunderwear.eu/eng/category etc. However, apart from those URLs, the site crawler finds many URLs in the form http://thermalunderwear.eu/category/product etc., so not including the language variable. Where it gets these I do not know, and since these URLs dont exist and the webshop simply shows the homepage, these URLs all have 50+ duplicate titles/content. Why oh why? 2. If I do a Google search for indexed URL's with English as language, I get many results formatted like this: Coldpruf Enthusiast mens thermal shirt - Thermal wear for men ...
thermalunderwear.eu/eng/men/coldpruf-enthusiast-mens-thermal-shirt 170+ items – Fine-ribbed longsleeve thermal shirt men from Enthusiast ... {$SCRIPT_NAME} eng/men/coldpruf-enthusiast-mens-the {$ajax_url} http://thermalunderwear.eu/ajax What are those variables doing there? It looks like it's taking something from our Smarty debug console, which is hidden but still active in the source code, but also the ajax URL which is in a completely different location. What is Google trying to show here?

  • Hey, An audit of a client's site revealed that due to their shopping cart, all their product pages were being duplicated. http://www.domain.com.au/digital-inverter-generator-3300w/ and http://www.domain.com.au/shop/digital-inverter-generator-3300w/ The easiest solution was to just block all /shop/ pages in Google Webmaster Tools (redirects were not an easy option). This was about 3 months ago, and in months 1 and 2 we undertook some great marketing (soft social book marking, updating the page content, flickr profiles with product images, product manuals onto slideshare etc). Rankings went up and so did traffic. In month 3, the changes in robots.txt finally hit and rankings decreased quite steadily over the last 3 weeks. Im so tempted to take off the robots restriction on the duplicate content.... I know I shouldnt but, it was working so well without it? Ideas, suggestions?

  • Hi All, Has anyone seen this 404 error before?  I installed a wordpress plugin that would allow users to switch between a mobile and desktop theme.  This was about 6 months ago and I thought nothing of it. Since I am new to SeoMoz, I have become aware of this lovely problem.  After setting up my campaign, I now have 1600 something 404 errors due to this plugin.  It looks like this plugin creates 4 to 5 links for each one of my posts and they all return up as a 404 error. Example: http://frogfanreport.com/football/page/36/ or http://frogfanreport.com/football/page/36/?wpmp_switcher=desktop I just noticed this morning in Google Webmaster tools that the errors are starting to show up there. Has anyone seen this?  Or know if this is a problem and what to do? zach

  • Even after studying the latest Panda algorithm, which frowns upon templated looks (kind of odd), I have been doing some thorough research trying to find out why a site I have been optimizing plummeted. It was hovering around 10, and fell to 37 in one to two weeks. After I read all about the Panda update, I assumed it was that. But the site falls in line and shouldn't be affected. I used that 3rd party duplicate content checker and the content checked out okay. I looked on my SEO Pro campaign and noticed that the on-page report got an A grade, hitting on all factors except having the keyword in the URL. So, I have a site that loads in good time and should be fairly well optimized, and falls in line from what I can tell with Google's guidelines, which I read through. So why the drop? I'm not saying this site is 100% perfect couldn't be any better, optimized to the hilt. It was designed a few years ago, but still, I am just having a hard time finding out why this site got slammed the way it did. www.spineandsportschiro.com Target Keyword(s) Roseville Chiropractor Roseville Chiropractic I welcome any on-page critiques, but mostly would like to know where to look or have some kind of insight to why the rankings dropped, so I can try and fix them the right way. Thank you,

  • Hi, I was continuously acquiring quality back-links and my site was moving up in Google SERPS for 3 main keywords. Within a few weeks  i was on Page 2 and 3  for these three keywords, but after reaching there I got stuck on these pages and positions despite no change in link building strategy / pattern. I have even increased the number and quality of links that I acquire per day, but I am still stuck at exact same positions. The website is10 months old and related to a software niche. I update this website once a week. For one keyword I am stuck at position 1 of page two (you can well imagine the frustration..!!). My question is that what do I need to do to get out of this "SERP lock"?

  • Hi everyone, First post. Tried a few awkward searches on the topic but I must be using bad keywords. I'm re-designing a site that has multiple products and matching multiple audiences. This means we have multiple sillos for multiple groups of keywords with the supporting pages for each silo landing page. Currently I'm working on updating the look and text of those landing pages for each silo to increase conversion. This leaves me with the root web page. We get quite a lot of search traffic from people searching our brand name - so this results in clicks straight through to our root domain. There are no product specific landing pages because it could be any one of the 3-5 different personas we have hitting the site from that source. Does anyone have any good examples of where a site has had multiple products and needed to segregate their audience on a root top page? I'd like to see some examples and hear peoples thoughts. At the moment I'm thinking I need to fill that page up with trust factors as to why people should use us as a company, along with navigational elements in relation to each and every product so they can click through to the proper landing page. The main way I can see on executing that is to have a rotating banner with the same tag line "this is what we do" but be alternating between banners relating to each product.. with their own click through button to go to the respective landing page. Thoughts anyone?  Example of sites doing this well?

  • I'm so embarrassed I could just spit, but instead I am seeking some friendly advice. I run ContentEqualsMoney.com, a copywriting company. We've been in business for just over a year and have done incredibly well. Of course, we do SEO copywriting but really focus on content marketing as a system for our clients. So last month I got a random call from TopSEOs.com. I remember looking at their site last year but didn't put much thought into it. When they called, my ears perked at the pitch. They could submit our site for ranking and we would only pay if we were found in the top ten. I thought - what the heck, what are the chances my site would rank. I checked them out on opensiteexplorer and saw they had crazy SEO juice so happy times. Then last week I saw the charge on our company credit card, sure enough we had made it to the top ten in SEO copywriting. I was flabbergasted but happy as a clam. So yesterday I check out their site and we were ranked #1 for SEO Copywriting. For about two seconds I was jumping for joy...but after that I got sick to my stomach. In all the chaos with end of year stuff and the holidays I never considered the fact that they didn't take any references. They never evaluated anything. Here we were ranked #1 and they couldn't possibly know anything about us. Not to mention that there are plenty of more established SEO Copywriting companies. I'm starting to freak out... I looked at my "competition" and buzzwrite.com (ranked #9) doesn't even exist anymore. So I searched for "topseos scam" and found a wealth of info from 2009 and 2010. I feel like such an idiot. We thought we were paying for an evaluation process but I guess we just got hosed for a ludicrous ranking. Now I don't know what to do. I want to hide under a rock. Do I need to worry about losing authority cred for being on this site? Should I tell them to keep the money but take my profile off their site asap? Or should I just keep my head down, see if any leads generate and then make sure to not pay them any additional monies? I was going to ask this privately but if my stupidity can help anybody else avoid these people that would make me feel less like upchucking. Thanks!

  • Hello Mozers ! I'm quite in doubt, so I thought why not ask for help ? Here's my problem : I need to better up a website's SEO that consists in a lot (1 million+ pages) of poor content. Basically it's like a catalog, where you select a brand, a product series and then the product, to then fill out a form for a request (sorry for the cryptic description, I can't be more precise). Beside the classic SEO work, a part of what (I think) I need to do is noindex some useless pages and rewrite important ones with great content, but for the noindexing part I'm quite hesitant on the how. There's like 200 000 pages with no visits since a year, so I guess they're pretty much useless junk that would be better off in noindex. But the webmaster is afraid that noindexing that much pages will hurt its long tail (in case of future visits), so he wants to check the SERP position of every one of them, to only eliminate those that are in the top 3 (for these there's no hope of amelioration he thinks). I think it would be wasting a lot of time and resources for nothing, and I'd advise to noindex them regardless of their position. The problem is I lack the experience to be sure of it and how to do it : Is it wise to noindex 200 000 pages bluntly in one time (isn't it a bad signal for google ?) or should we do this progressively in like a few months ? Thanks a lot for your help ! Johann.

  • Dear All, I would really like help with this. Due to some unknown reason (another thread is open for this reason), my google webmaster is showing 7000 not found URL's. Now, when i try to find out the day these broken URLs were detected, webmaster is showing dates between November 2011 to December 2nd, 2011. I havent found a single not found error showing after 2nd December 2011. So does that mean that the mistake has been solved? Because daily webmaster is adding 200-300 not found URLs. Along with this, my traffic has dropped drastically since 12th December and has still not recovered. Are these not found URLs the reason for this sudden traffic drop? If so, then i m ready to find someone for paid seo to remove this error. I would love to have some concrete answers for these questions. Thanksss

  • Before the holidays, I completed a website redesign on an eCommerce website. One of the reasons for this was duplicate content. The new design has removed all duplicate content. (Product descriptions on 2 pages) I took a look at my Crawl Diagnostics Summary this morning and this is what I saw: Last Crawl Completed: Dec. 15th, 2011 Next Crawl Starts: Dec. 22nd, 2011 Thinking it might have something to do with the holidays. Although, I would like to see this data as soon as possible. Is there a way I can request a crawl from seomoz ? Thanks, John Parker

  • I have a site that is largely based on images. It runs on Wordpress. Each page has about 10 images. What is the best way to upload images? As a WP gallery. As another gallery (with a gallery plugin) As seperate images uploaded via WP (it shows a thumbnail which is links to the larger image). That way each image can have a title. As seperate images uploaded via FTP in which case I would then make a thumbnail which will link to the larger image. This option would only be good if WP does not optomize the thumbnail images that it creates. As a text title which links to the image. Since most of my content is based on images and mostly comes from Google images I was wondering what the best method to use is.

  • Our site was affected by panda but now we have recovered almost. But some strange things are going with our site for example Traffic for some pages has been dropped(over 100 position) overnight and recover. (graph is attached for a page). We have dropped(over 100 position) on all keywords for a page except a single keyword (staying on first or 2n position). Our home page is not ranking in top 100 position for title keywords. Is our website under any type of filter or penalized by Google?. What is your opinion about our internal link structure and content? • I have been looking at different seo companies for link building. I found a ranked list on Topseos.com. Many of them offer the same services as offshore SEOs, namely: Article marketing blog comments forum comments/profiles bookmarking PR directories Link acquisition by contacting relevants sites and negotiating a fee for a link I know that custom link acquisition is the most effective, but it gets very expensive. And, you don't know what each link is going to cost you. Here are my questions: Of the other methods (other thank custom link acquisition), how would you rank their effectiveness? The other methods seem kinda gimmicky, is it worth the time/money? Have you seen sites rank well for competitve keywords using articles/bookmarking/blog comments/directories etc? How do you know i a company is going to them manually as they claim? as opposed to using some automated software. Thanks

  • So, I've been blogging for almost 3 years now. I've always used wordpress, but recently changed from a ProPhoto theme to a Woo Theme (Editorial...don't know if that matters). I've signed up for the SEOmoz website and HOLY CROW I have problems with my website out the wazoo. I'm not sure I'm reading the chart right, but it seems to say that all of my redirecting problems are because my links are redirecting from an http://www..... to a http://http://www... • OK so I am putting together a list of questions to refer potential clients to. The purpose of these questions is to: 1, Help them understand the difference between "just give us your keywords and we will make you rank" seo  and the full range of options that are advocated here on seo moz.  .... 2, Get them to see that there are different levels of involvement that are available for different aspects of a campaign and give them ideas and options on how much input they want to have as well as make them see that we can help them with even the stuff they are gonna do themselves or do it for them with there input and permission. Thats where things get a bit confusing I was thinking of having a list of fifty linkbuilding/linkbaiting  techniques and check box options beside each one so that they can read a little bit about the particular technique ie forum participation for example and then see how they felt like that related to there industry , wether they would want there staff to do it with some training from us wther they would want us to help them find the right forums and show them how to link back and to which page, or wether they would just want us to handle everything or simply not feel that that was right for there business .. then they would move on to the next thing ie   video creation or user generated content and in the end we would have a big list of things to discuss with them and they would have a better understandiing of how much there is to good seo and what might work for them and also how we could help them and how a relationship/ partnership might look I would love some feed back on this is it possible will it help us to build trust with potential clients (which is diffucult for a new biz in this industry)  how would you lay it out would it be a usefull resource for other seo companies etc thanks so much seo mozzers this forum is awsome and i know you will steer me in the right direction oh ps   this would be something we would keep on our site

  • I have an ecommerce shop here: http://m00.biz/UHuGGC I've added a submenu for each major category and subcategory of items for sale. There are over 60 categories on that submenu. I've heard that loading this (and the number of links) before the content is very bad for SEO. Some will place the menu below the content and use absolute positioning to put the menu where it currently is now. It's a bit ridiculous in doing things backwards and wondering if search engines really don't understand. So the question is twofold: (1) Are the links better in a bottom loading sidemenu where they are now? (2) Given the number of links (about 80 in total with all categories and subcategories), is it bad to have the sidemenu show the subcategories which, in this instance, are somewhat important? Should I just go for the drilldown, e.g. show only categories and then show subcategories after? Truth is that users probably would prefer the dropdown with all the categories and second level subcategories, despite the link number and placement.

Does this number counts whole FB shares of some website links by ALL FB users? Or is it a number of some website FB account posts? Some clearance would be very helpful.. The bounce rate from these countries is high since presumably they leave when they realize that all cards are in English only. I was thinking of providing some greeting cards in different languages. I was thinking of offering each language in a subfolder which is only have the cards in that language but the content will either be in English or an automatic translation per IP. I do not plan to translate the content into different languages only the cards. What is the best way to do this?

If another site (example.com) links to you, and upon mouseover of the link, you see it's supposed to go to something like: http://example.com/index.php?option=com_mtree&task=visit&link_id=123&Itemid=456 and then when clicked on you get to your actual site, is that considered a real link? How much of a link? Thanks! Aviva

  • So a little question here. I was looking into a module to help implement canonical URLs on a certain CMS and I came a cross a snarky comment about relative vs. absolute URLs being used. This person was insistent that relative URLs are fine and absolute URLs are only for people who don't know what they are doing. My question is, if using relative URLs, doesn't it make it easier to have your content scraped? After all, if you do get your content scraped at least it would point back to your site if using absolute URLs, right? Am I missing something or is my thinking OK on this? Any feedback is much appreciated!

  • I was doing some research and a lot of my competition are websites from Universities, but I got surprised when I saw that a lot of their  Anchor Text  where things like  Buy Viagra , Play poker , Buy Cialis , a lot of their inbound links where about things like that , one of the sites I was doing research on was  www.imba.ie.edu , this site was #1 for the keyword I want that is related to education. Also other sites on the #1 page of google for this keyword (universities websites) had the same kind of inbound links and achord texts.  Whats going on here??
