  • I am working with a company that has had a few "SEO Experts" work on it's site over the last year.  The strategy these "experts" used to generate keywords is to optimize on many general keywords and, when mixed all together, make the keywords they are optimizing against. For example, they did photo printing.  They would optimize for the keywords: photo prints printing print photographs photography 4x6 cheap .... Maybe I am missing something, but I have never seen  a keyword list managed this way...  is this "normal"?  Is this something "new" I am missing?  Any advice or strategy tips on this one? Thanks in advance!

  • I am having a problem with local search for my business. I submitted the same NAP (Name, Address, Phone) info to Google Places as I have submitted via LocalEZE and Universal Business Listing. Here is the issue. The local number that is being used does not have any way to track calls, meaning the phone company (xo communications) does not give us the number of incoming calls. To add call tracking to the local numbers through our PBX system is very expensive, $2000 per store. Also to transfer this local number to a call tracking company (like callsource or whoiscalling) is a lot of trouble and not an option either. I need to track the call count somehow so I have two options left. 1) Get a new local number (that is also a tracking number through a phone tracking company) and then submit this to Google Places, LocalEZE and Universal Business Listing. The issue with this is that all of our citations will be re-set with a new local number, basically we'd have to do local SEO all over again. 2) Use the main 800 number in Google Places, this can be tracked. However, then our local number is on all of the NAP citations and Google Places will be the only web property with an 800 number. What are your thoughts?

  • Hi! I've technically been a member for a few years, but just recently decided to go Pro (and I gotta say, I'm glad I did!). Anyway, as I've been researching and analyzing, one thing I noticed a competitor is doing is creating location-specific pages. For example, they've created a page that has a URL similar to this: www.theirdomain.com/seattle-keyword-phrase They have a few of these for specific cities. They rank well for the city-keyword combo in most cases. Each city-specific page looks the same and the content is close to being the same except that they drop in the "seattle keyword phrase" bit here and there. I noticed that they link to these pages from their site map page, which, if I were to guess, is how SEs are getting to those pages. I've seen this done before on other sites outside my industry too. So my question is, is this good practice or is it something that should be avoided?

  • You can find the service at viglink.com, they do dynamic linking to anchor text for participating publishers on a cost-per-click basis.  Less interested here in the conversion quality and more interested in the broad SEO value. Any ideas?

  • We own and operate more than two dozen educational related sites.  The business team is attempting to standardize some parts of our site hierarchy so that our sitemap.php, about.php, privacy.php and contact.php are all at the root directory.  Our sitemap.php is generated by our sitemap.xml files, which are generated from our URLlist.txt files. I need to provide some feedback on this initiative. I'm worried about adding more stand-alone pages to our root directory and as part of a separate optimization in the future I was planning to suggest we group the "privacy", "about" and "contact" pages in a separate folder. We generally try to put our most important pages/directories for SEO in the root as our homepages pass a lot of link juice and have high authority. We do not invest SEO time into optimizing these pages as they're not pages we're trying to rank for, and I've already been looking into even no-following all links to them from our footer, sitemap, etc. I know that adding these "corporate" pages to a site are usually a standard part of the design process but is there any SEO benefit to having them at the root?  And along the same lines, is there any SEO harm to having unimportant pages at the root? What do you guys think out there in Moz land?

  • I'm creating the URL structure for an ecommerce site and was wondering if it's better to structure my URLs according to the most popular way people word their key phrases or by what makes most sense from a navigation perspective. Let's say I'm selling clothing (I'm not, just an example). I want the site to be open enough so a user can navigate by Person Type (Men's, Women's, Children's), Clothing Type (Shoes, Shirts, Hats), and Brands (Nike, Reebok, adidas). My gut and past experience say to structure the URLs from the least specific to the most specific: mysite.com/mens/shoes/nike But I know "men's Nike shoes" is searched for more than "men's shoes Nike", which would render this URL: mysite.com/mens/nike/shoes I know mysite.com/mens-nike-shoes would be best, but the folders setup is what I have to work with. So which is best for SEO? URLs that play to the structure of the most searched for key phrases? Or URLs that follow the information architecture/navigation of a site? Nate

  • Quick question: I have been scouring SEOMoz.org along with webmaster forums looking for an answer, but we have a person who insists that the H1 tag be located in the Footer. I feel that is is fundamentally wrong because it is not the intent of the H1 tag, and I do not believe it is a best practice. That being said would we see what little value the H1 tag has disappear if we put it in the footer, would we be penalized, or am I being too vanilla by wanting to keep it in the Title position?

  • I was looking in Google webmaster tools and it says I have 95 duplicate title tags for my site Noah's Dad. When I look through the list it appears the pages with duplicate title tags are some of my category pages, archive pages, and some author pages... Not sure if you guys can use some of the tools to see what is actually showing up duplicate or  not, and if you need more info just let me know. But I wanted to see if this is something I should be concerned with? Should WMT also say 0 in duplicate content? It seems like when I started my blog I was told no to be conceded with this sort of stuff in gwmt. Anyways...I just wanted to see what you guys think. (By the way, is there any way to tell what this duplicate content is having (or has had) on my SERP results? Thanks.

  • Hello, I have a site that has been doing good for quite a while now.  But lately I'm running into issues with on page seo.  I have ranked well for long periods of time, but changes like adding content or moving stuff around has bumped me out of the rankings.  I would prefer not to publicly disclose the site. My main keyword I rank for is "word1 word2".  I notice if I do a site: search for "word1 word2" homepage is #1, site search for just word1 it's #1 as well, but the word2 returns a category listing above the homepage.  I noticed this happen right as I fell back from the rankings. I am looking to hire an SEO profession to help me out with on page issues.  I've come to admit that I just don't understand something about this and I need help from someone who has a lot of experience with this. I was hoping to find recommendations by people here for a company I could hire for this.  I would want to pay no more than $1,000.  I hope that budget is high enough to get a skilled individual/company working with me. I'm not sure where to search for online to get a skilled on page seo professional, so I thought a personal recommendation from someone here would possibly be able to help. Thanks

  • We compared our and competitor pages. And we have got next statistics: Internal Followed Links:     184     4,496 We are thinking about changing our shopping cart links format from /product_info.php?products_id=3547 to /product_name.html This should increase "number of our pages" and "number of links" from them.
But in case a description of products from the same category often is very similar. We worry about duplicating page content. Could you give any advice in that situation? Do Internal Links play a big role in page rank? Thanks. PS: at attached image you can find full page metrics from open site explorer. Our metrics are at left, competitors - right. BtTap.jpg

  • Hi, All! Artificial link exchanges (contacting a vaguely connected site and requesting to exchange links to increase your PR) is, as far as I know, considered an outdated, not-so-smart technique, as Google might devalue them. Yet, for real business partners to exchange links seems to be an entirely accepted and encouraged technique. While that would be intuitive to a human who's viewing the pages. how might Google detect when two sites that link to each other are linking because they are trusted business associates (valuable) as opposed to when they are doing a link exchange (devalued)? Thanks! Aviva

  • I'm working on an html sitemap for our ecommerce site and want to limit the links on each page to less than 100. I've created an article for the initial page, but what is the proper way to go to the next page? Do I create another article page (and so on and so on) until I have the sitemap completed? If so, how do I link from one page to the next? Would my on page text read: "sitemap continued" with anchor text on the link "sitemap page 2.."? It seems like all the sitemaps I've seen just fill one page with links and very little regard for "link saturation" and continuous pages. Thanks!

  • I'm having some difficulty with a few of the sites I'm managing right now.  When I run a report here, I'm getting a duplicate content issue with sites that I'm running through WordPress.  Sites running on a different CMS are not getting the issue.  The duplicate content is being listed as from two URL's that are identical.  I checked trailing slash, spelling, capitalization, everything.  It looks like the same site is being marked as two with duplicate content. Does anyone have any ideas of what could be causing this and/or what I may be able to do to resolve the issue (or if it's really something to worry about or not)?  Thanks. • I own a couple domains that are specific to a product and would like to know which one folks on here recommend. Primary Google Search Term Example: "Tax Bond" Example Domain 1: www.taxbonds.net Example Domain 2: www.tax-bond.net I've done research on here before and have come to the conclusion that hyphenated domains aren't bad (no more than 2 hyphens though). So, do I go for the EXACT search term with the hyphen or do I go for the pluralized search term without the hyphen, even though most people will not add the "s" in the Google search? Thanks, Alex

  • We have changed our company and want to 301 old domain from new domain in order to transfer the benefits of backlinks (DA: 50, 115 Linking Root Domains).  I have the ability to modify around 50% of the backlinks.  So my question is: Instead of redirecting all the links, should I update the 50% to link to the new domain instead of relying on redirects?  Would this possibly trip an algorithmic filter and devalue these links?  Or should I just do a 301 and not worry about modifying the links?

  • I just came across schema.org, which has a massive list of attribute tags that can be added to HTML code, presumable with the benefit of giving search engines clear signals about your content -- and by extension, presumably boosting the ranking of good-quality content sites. Many of the tags point back to schema.org for definitions of content types. Since it's the first time I've seen this, I thought I'd ask the question: Do the tags listed at schema.org carry any weight with Google, or is this a self-promotional effort by schema.org to become an arbiter of SEO and content encoding? Thanks folks.

  • What is up with Bing? I have a couple of  small, but well-optimized Wordpress sites that dropped from top 3 to outside of top 50 in ranking for a list of key phrases in Bing, whereas in Google the very same sites had a positive development for the same phrases. I also work with a rather large, but (at the moment) poorly optimized site, and this site went from outside of top 50 to top 3 for several reasonably competitive key phrases! This should teach me not to take a vacation, I guess...

  • I have been working on a website for a little more than 2 weeks. I have seen improvements for several of my keywords in both Google and Bing SERPs (first page in Bing and working on it in Google) but have seen no improvements with Yahoo (No keywords are appearing in the top 50 results.) Am I missing something with Yahoo? I have performed onpage optimization so that titles, meta descriptions, bolded text, header tags, alt tags, anchor text, etc is all there. I have also built offpage links using blogs, other people's websites, a few directories (submitted but not displayed), social media, etc. I have never experienced this kind of issue before. Google has since indexed the correct version of the robots.txt file. However, we're still seeing awful titles/descriptions in the SERPs and traffic is not coming back. When using the tool and placing an url that does not have markup present it will show that as the error. Or if part of markup is wrong, it will diagnose it accordingly. • Hi all, Thanks and really appreciate for your time helping me out here, and i am very new to SEO. Just a brief introduction, our team have been developing a gaming review website (specifically targeting MMO game, facebook game, and browser-based game) since September 2011, and the website show significant improvement for the 1st month, and we got daily UV spiking up to  2k in November. The issue here is that the visitors start to become very stagnant, and even dropping now. Even though we try hard to publish more game reviews and there is NO IMPROVEMENT AT ALL for past 2 months in terms of number of visitors, and we have no idea how should we further proceed to attract more visitors...We have about 7 k site pages (however not all are with content). For the past 2 months it seems like there is nothing going on that proportionate to the effort we put in. Pretty discouraging, so we decided to sign up SEOMOZ to get SEO help from the community here. Some general questions we have: 1. Is it because of the the quality of the content we write ? (not enough keyword density, review too short, etc). 2. Is it because of the website designed not user friendly and not optimized? 3. Is it because of the general gaming trend, or other competitors? 4. Are we penalized by google by any chance? Are we spamming or anything wrong that deter our improvement? 5. Our main revenue source is on advertising, and currently we are using adsense. Would the ads placement affect anything? 6. Based on your knowledge and expertise, any advice would you give us? Would appreciate if you can take a kind look at the website to understand the scenario better: www.gameonline2.com,  with 3 subdomain of: wiki.gameonline2; gameplay.gameonline2; cheats.gameonline2. For your reference, example our competitors are: www.onrpg.com; www.bbgsite.com; www.mmohut.com I would be happy to share with you any further information including google analytics if needed. I have report generated from SEOMOZ but i would appreciate the pros to help me take a look to give me a more complete ideas of how can i further improve to gain at least 10k visitors per day. Thanks again for your kind help and time. Andrew

  • Hello, I recently discovered that half of the pages on my site, about 3,500 were not being indexed or were indexing very very slow and with a heavy weight on them. I discovered the problem in the "HTML Suggestions" within Google's Webmaster Tools. An example of my main issue. All 3 of these URL were showing 200 Status OK in Google. www.getrightmusic.com/mixtape/post/ludacris_1_21_gigawatts_back_to_the_first_time www.getrightmusic.com/mixtape/post/ludacris_1_21_gigawatts_back_to_the_first_time/ www.getrightmusic.com/mixtape/ludacris_1_21_gigawatts_back_to_the_first_time I added some code to the .htaccess in order to remove the trailing slashes across the board. I also properly set up my 404 redirects, which were not properly set up by my developer (when the site "relaunched" 6 months ago 😞 ) I then added the Canonical link rel tags on the site posts/entries. I'm hoping I followed all the correct steps in fixing the issue and now, I guess, I just have to wait until the penalty gets lifted? I'm also not %100 certain that I have been penalized. I'm just assuming based on the SERP ceiling I feel and the super slow or lack of indexing my content. Any insight, help or comments would be super helpful. Thank you. Jesse

  • On one of our sites, since the Summer, Yahoo Slurp bot has been crawling our pages at about 5 times a minute.   We have put a crawl delay on it and it does not respect our robots.txt.    Now the issue is it's triggering javascript (which bots shouldn't) triggering our adsense, ad server, analytics information, etc. We've thought of banning the bot all together  but get a good amount of Yahoo traffic.   We've though about programmatic-ly not showing the javascript (ad + analytic) tags but are slightly afraid the Yahoo might consider this cloaking. What are the best practices to deal with this bad bot.

  • I am working on link building campaign and trying to gather inbound links from various subject external websites. I have big confusion with this effort. I am working on eCommerce website and getting inbound links from technology related website. So, Does it really matter for better performance? I want to give one example to get more idea. I am selling table lamps on my website and trying to get inbound links from that kind of websites which are highly dominating to table lamps or lighting industry. But, This is not only one case. Sometime, I have opportunities to create inbound links from different subject website. Simply, If I will compile one content for UGC section on SEOmoz and links to my website with table lamps so, Will it help me to rank for table lamps keyword? Exact match hyperlinks on external website always matter::: That I aware about it. But, what about subject orientation. I am Table Lamps monster & you are SEO monster. So, Will Google give benefit to that kind of links which are dominating different subject? I have solved some issues about quality of website after installing SEOmoz toolbar in my browser. Because, I or We are visiting multiple websites during daily stuff and may find out opportunities to drop our website link over there. But, I have fear to drop my website link in any website. Does it really matter quality or website & How can I judge it better rather than SEOmoz toolbar? I have added such a big question with proper declaration but, I want to jump in to link building campaign and want to earn good value after my long term effort.
