  • How should I structure my product URLs for the best SEO results? Lets say my product is "American Apparel 2001". Would it be better to run the URL together or use a "-" between each word. Here are two ideas I had, but feel free to suggest others. realthread.com/products/americanapparel2001 or realthread.com/products/american-apparel-2001 Thanks for the help! Dru

  • I have a client who is concerned about the performance of his images ranking on Google Images. I have taken a look at the obvious things like - alt tags, title tags , file names. I am not sure why he is struggling quite so much to get his images ranked well as the sites he is competing against and who are already ranking are a very poor quality. This is his site - http://www.ukweddingfavours.co.uk Would really appreciate your feedback and I can dish out some good answers.

  • We have some pages targeting the different countries but with the Near to Similar content/products, just distinguished with the country name etc. one of the page was assigned to me for optimizing. two or three Similar pages are ranked with in top 50 for the main keyword. I updated some on page content to make it more distinguish from others. After some link building, I found that this page still not showing in Google result, even I found the following message on the google. "In order to show you the most relevant results, we have omitted some entries very similar to the 698 already displayed.
If you like, you can repeat the search with the omitted results included." I clicked to repeat omitted result and found that my targeted url on 450th place in google (before link building this was not) My questions are Is google consider this page low quality or duplicate content? Is there any role of internal linking to give importance a page on other (when they are near to similar)? Like these pages can hurt the whole site rankings? How to handle this issue?

  • This friday I noticed that I'd lost pretty much all my product pages in the SERP and also their rankings for the product names. These are products I both have introduced to the market (sweden) and also some that I've been the only one selling. I've analyzed a couple of different ranking-faults. Examples: **"super mario väggdekaler" should rank  **http://www.roligaprylar.se/Super-Mario-Vaeggdekaler.html as #1 and has done for several years. Instead this search in my internal search engine ranks #10-#15 with no relevance. www.roligaprylar.se/?q=mario%20v%E4g "jedi morgonrock" should rank  www.roligaprylar.se/Jedi-Morgonrock.html as #1 or #2 but instead this url ranks as #12 www.roligaprylar.se/product_detail.php?pid=Jedi-Morgonrock "Charlie sheen bobblehead" (in the swedish serp this should be the most simple term to rank on. previously #1) my internal search engine ranks for #8 with this url  <cite>www.roligaprylar.se/?q=Charlie%20Sheen%20Bobblehead</cite>J So I've drawn these conclusions and actions Products that don't rank well longer but still ranks with their alternative non-rewritten url has gotten deep links from affilliates (i track affilliate ids and stuff via this link) and have replaced the original url which is rewritten. Action: Canonical urls for these non-rewritten products to the rewritten version. For example on this product page www.roligaprylar.se/product_detail.php?pid=Jedi-Morgonrock I've placed a canonical for this url www.roligaprylar.se/Jedi-morgonrock.html With the products not ranking at all or when searches in my search engine shows up I suspect some kind of dup content punishment where Google thinks the search result is more important than the product page. Action: All search-pages are now noindex, follow I also increased product name density in terms of keywords on the product page. But I'm still owned and losing tons of money during the holidays (buying adwords at obscene amounts instead hehe). So just wanted to hear with you guys. Are my conclusions and actions correct? What have I missed, what more could I do to reverse this? Thanks Dan

  • Google and Yahoo are the two major search engines in Japan. You can search using Western characters, and you often see English language results with Japanese (Chinese) characters next to them. As I don't speak Japanese, how do I approach SEO for my Japanese-language site? would appreciate any experiences and educational sources on the topic.

  • I have a website that I don't use much anymore but it ranks on the first page for one of my main keywords.  I am using another few websites in different niches right now that are doing better and are more functional.  It may cost around 1,300 or so to get the website that I don't use anymore, to look and function in the new ways of the internet.  Would you suggest that I: Do a site redesign (which is more difficult because to make the site do what I want it needs to be out of a wordpress theme) or 301 redirect the site to another one of my sites? Would it make sense to do a 301? The domain is 5 years old but doesn't bring in any leads anymore because it would take a redesign for that to happen.  How can I still benefit from the SEO that I have done on that site? Thanks and sorry if this message is hard to follow.  If I need to clear anything up please let me know.

  • I noticed that my page one ranked landing pages that don't get a lot of love from me have dropped in rank big time on Google this week.  This is a site that has static (meaning, I can't freshen up the content easily) landing pages for products that we sell.  The pages that dropped are the ones that have the fewest inbound links, and don't get much attention on the social media side.  Our most important landing pages have also dropped, but just a few spots on page one.  This is a first for me.  Does anyone think that this is a "lack of freshness" penalty? We are still number one on page one for our brand search terms.  Would fresh content give me a shot at getting the pages back up?  I'm willing to update them slowly, but before I go crazy, I'm reaching out to the pros here.

  • I've searched extensively for this, but could not find a definitive answer. We recently updated our website and it contains links to about 30 PDF data sheets. I want to determine if the text from these PDFs is being archived by search engines. When I do this search http://bit.ly/rRYJPe  (google - site:www.gamma-sci.com and filetype:pdf) I can see that the PDF urls are getting indexed, but does that mean that their content is getting indexed? I have read in other posts/places that if you can copy text from a PDF and paste it that means Google can index the content.  When I try this with PDFs from our site I cannot copy text, but I was told that these PDFs were all created from Word docs, so they should be indexable, correct? Since WordPress has you upload PDFs like they are an image could this be causing the problem? Would it make sense to take the time and extract all of the PDF content to html? Thanks for any assistance, this has been driving me crazy.

  • I have city centric website.  For sake of simplicity, say I only have 2 cities -- City A and City B. Depending on a user's IP address, they will either get City A or City B.  Users can change their location through javascript on pages.  But there is no cross-linking between cities.  By this, I mean that unless you can read or execute javascript, there is no way for you to get from city A to City B. My concern is this:  googlebot comes to my site, and we serve them up City A.  How does City B get discovered if Googlebot doesn't read javascript? We have an xml sitemap plus plenty of backlinks to City B.  Is this sufficient? Should I provide a static link to City B (and vice versa) on the homepage for crawling purposes?

  • Working with a law firm with a well-established website that wants to build a separate website for their affiliate title insurance company. Currently, they only mention this company (and list a phone number) on their Real Estate page under Practice Areas. Although the affiliate company doesn't have a website, their location and phone number are listed in tons of local business directories. I'm currently working on a law firm site that was just built, and the process of getting that one listed in all the directories has been time consuming, so I'm guessing this new site will be much easier, since all I'll have to do is claim ownership of the current listings so I can add a link to the new website (and add additional info to make the profile complete). Would I be correct in assuming this will be a much easier link campaign? As for new site setup questions, they will obviously get some strong links coming from the existing law firm site. Should they host this new site on a different server so the SE's give more power to the law firm links? Is there really a value to reserving the new domain for 3+ years right off the bat? Any other suggestions welcome. Thanks.

  • Currently this page ranks for the phrase "keep calm and carry on" http://www.paper-source.com/cgi-bin/paper/item/Keep-Calm-and-Carry-On-Bandages/3307.010/413160.html This page is just one product of many in the Keep Calm category.  I'd rather this page be the result: http://www.paper-source.com/cgi-bin/paper/gifts/keep-calm-and-carry-on.html seomoz states: "To prevent engines from potentially seeing a signal that this page is not the intended ranking target and creating additional competition for your page, we suggest staying away from linking internally to another page with the target keyword(s) as the exact anchor text." So obviously I should remove the link from the product detail page, but what other things can I do to get the category page to rank higher than the one product page? Thanks!

  • How do I get Google to crawl white papers that displays a form for human visitors? I have been looking into this and understand that I need to set the form up as a GET form which has been done. Google said they want you to "avoid" forms that require personal information but to what extent do they want you to do that? The form is used as a lead generator so we need to collect information such as name, company name, email, ect.The information we require currently is: Name, Company name, Email, Phone Number and Number of employees.  Once a user puts in their information they have access to the rest of the content and they don't need to re-enter the information in so I assume once Google gets past this feature they can gain access to the rest of the content. I understand that I need to have a form that doesn't ask for personal information which is the dilemma. So what should we do to work around this? Is there a solution that will allow me to obtain some personal information while still allowing Google to crawl the pages? Thoughts and any feedback is much appreciated, TJ

  • I have ended up with several hundred sites which I purchased off the seo company I use as they went belly up.  I purchased them as I had spent a small fortune buying links for the years and I thought that if they went under all my links would be lost. When they transferred the sites into my accounts in go daddy the owners names changed to one owner!  Therefore google either know that I own them or at the very least know that only a few people own them as I had four go daddy accounts. Previously they were all registered to different people.  The registrar details have since been changed to various owners but I guess the damage is done.  I have gone from pos3 pg1 to pos3 pg2.  I ranked highly for lots of terms and they have all dropped. I don’t want to be using black hat techniques and my intention was to continue to build content on these sites with a view to adding links to other relevant sites in the future. Not all of them link to me and they do link to lots of other sites that the seo company did work for  To be honest my only concern short term was not to loose the links.  Now I feel the links are considered worthless by google and I don’t know if I should keep the sites or throw them away! I think all the sites need redesigning and updating and this is what I intended to do.  However now that google have seen that they once were owned by one person have they become worthless?

  • My client has 2 domains which point to the same sever. eg a.com and b.com both point to the same place. For now a.com has better seo but the client wants to switch to using b.com more. Im guessing 301 redirects will not work in this case. How would I handle this? If i'm forced to manage both domains, what is the best practice for monitoring in seomoz pro. • UPDATED: I meant to say SEO VALUE, not just business value Lets say I have a site - www.company.com, and I set up a Facebook Page - www.facebook.com/company. I understand the SEO value of having the domain www.company.com "Liked", using the FB Like button on my homepage lets say, or the same goes for individual pages - www.company.com/page. My question is rather about having my Facebook Page - Facebook.com/company "Liked".  Are those likes counted by the engines as a strong signal that www.company.com should rank well? Or only that the Facebook Page - Facebook.com/company should rank well in searches for that company?

  • In an effort to make is easier for our clients to link to content on our site we intend on creating a simpler url structure for them: site.com/1234 will 301 to site.com/xyz/abc/1234-this-is-where-we-want-you Is there a danger of creating new 301's just for this purpose, the goal here is to make it easier for clients to link to content and thus garner more inbound links.

  • I've got a little bit of a dilemma.  A company I'm working for has an ecommerce site that is moving to Volusion.  It is impossible to add "domain.com/blog" so I am forced to use a subdomain in order to keep consistency. We are starting a push in Social media and have secured shorter handles for the brand to use on the different networks. One of the main goals originally for developing a blog is to build trust but since the domain names are so big (26 characters) and the ecommerce sites already have a good amount of trust building factors in them I am beginning to question my original plan. My question is this: If I go with a shorter brand recognized domain name to develop the blog on which is different than the ecommerce domain (keyword matched) will I loose too much trust and ranking opportunity because of the difference in domains. I know there isn't a golden bullet for this question but i would love to get you your take on it.

  • I recently purchased a blog within my product category - it has many first page rankings for difficult keywords within my niche. I am wondering if it makes more sense for for me to continue to operate this blog and build links to my site and blog (blog is in wordpress) or to export the XML feed and upload the content to my blog (new site also in wordpress), at which point I would do a 301 at the Top-Level domain. Any thoughts, ideas, or personal experiences would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

  • Dear SEOmoz folk, At the moment, I have one (rather large) site set up as a campain. I have decided to split off parts of my site into sub domains. My question is, can I set up these sub domains as a completely separate campaign on here? I'd very much like the crawl reports separated out for each one. A very real fear I have is that my site is well over double 10,000 pages, so I never truly see the actual number of errors that I have. Thoughts appreciated. Many thanks, Matt

  • Around November 23rd/25th - SERPs on Bing largely disappeared for my website.  I did a site relaunch with new optimized content and proper redirects on November 12th. How can I tell if my site has been blocked by Bing? How long does a sitemap take to be indexed by Bing? Is this is a normal practice for sites that seem to have massive amounts of new content on Bing? Funny thing is things have only gotten better on Google which I know is unrelated but it's funny how Bing makes things so easy yet so difficult! I notice a lot of competion higher than me on SERPs for specific keywords have these links from website with high DA.
