Tips on the best free tools or techniques to promote your site

Hi i would like to know after receiving lots of email about tools to help with seo and promoting your site and would like to know if anyone has used any as yet. I have kept away from paid tools as i have been reading that they are a waste of time but would like to know your thoughts.
I would also like to know if there are any good free tools out there to use to help make your site better and increase traffic and if there are any techniques or sites that i should be using
any advice would be great

For site audit to find duplicate content ot missing title tags I use Screaming Frog. Free up to 500 pages, then you have to pay for larger sites. Using this tool will let you know what to fix on your site and help improve the site.

Best way to build backlinks
Hey guys, I was wondering what is the best way to build back links ? I have all the read moz's articles regarding this and I know the crucial parts are creating content, engaging users via social media etc. What I am interested in knowing is whether guest posting is still a solution to create that domain authority you need to rank ? I've spoken with some people that told me guest posting is out of date and will not pay off using it. By using guest posting of course I relate to creating unique content and valuable to the user. Best way to build inbound links?
Recently I learned that there are links that are nofollow that google doesn't consider part of SEO. Open Site Explorer Changed?
I am getting this at the bottom of Open Site Explorer. I have never seen this message before. "Why does my number of inbounds links listed not match my total links count? The listed number may be slightly different because we only show 25 links per domain (so that you see a variety). Additionally you have 18 links from no-indexed pages. Unfortunately, we can't get info for those links." Did SEOMoz change something? If I look at a site, SEOMOZ's OSE doesn't show me all the links it can find anymore? It only shows 25 max???

Google webmaster tools Who links the most updates?
Has anyone ever seen in the section in GWT "Who links the most" actually update. I have sites listed in there that had me on a blogroll so I had 93,000 links to me and they removed those links months ago but GWT still shows that number of links. Does anyone else actually see those numbers go down as links are removed?

Link to my site not showing up in Open Site Explorer
If a link to my site on another domain does not appear in the list of links gathered by the Open Site Explorer, does that mean that this backlink will not be crawled by search engine bots? Is there anything I should do to make sure that this link IS crawled and/or recognized by search engines coughGooglecough?

Why aren't links to my site showing up in open site explorer?
