Not an unusual situation, I have a blog on blog.domain.com it has quite a few blog postings.  The platform is old and will be scrapped, but the blog content itself is going to be moved to domain.com/blog.

The current process is we are manually listing all linked to/content pages and we are going to 301 redirect them to their counterparts on the new blog.  This is going to be a tedious process.

      A) Is there any way to automate the moving of the blog?

      B) What is the best way to do the massive 301 redirect, php headers, .htaccess?  Should we move the individual pages with redirects, or redirect the domain in the .htaccess (this will be very difficult to match all the titles and file structure)?

        Hi Keri.

You're right! I am not a professional in the matter and I am trying to catch up little by little.

        Thanks for your advice!

This thread is actually four years old, and the original poster mentioned that the problem was solved so no worries! You might want to look at more recent questions, as SEO advice can change as the search engines change.

We solved it, our web programmer wrote a program to scrape all of our posts and turn them into a format that imported into wordpress.  As far as the redirects we kept the page titles the same and did a sitewide 301 that sent them from blog.example.com to example.com/blog/

Although I would still like to grab Richard's php script for doing this in a more efficient manner in the future.

It will if you add r=301 to the last line like so:

              RewriteRule ^(.*)$ /blog/$1 [L,R=301]

Spencer, did you get this taken care of off-line, or is this question still open?

Would you mind posting or messaging me the correct script?  It would be a great help, thanks.

Yup, that will do the job of relocation, but it does not 301 the link and therefore you will not transfer link juice.

                      Found this one:

                      RewriteEngine On
                      RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^blog.mysite.com
                      RewriteRule ^(.*)$ /blog/$1 [L]

I am mobile, so excuse the typos 🙂 Using PHP, grab the incoming title and do a 301 header redirect to the new location. No need to mass 301 in .htaccess. 🙂 If you need the script, let me know

Referencing links in Articles and Blogs

Hi I am wondering if the tag in html is picked up by google as a reference point? I.e when you put a superscript in word it puts a small number next to your sentence. Then you have a list of reference at the end of the blog/article does google recognise this?

Should each new blog post be added to Sitemap.xml

Hello everyone, I have a website that has only static content. I have recently added a Blog to my website and I am wondering if I need to add each new Blog post to my Sitemap.xml file? Or is there another way/better way to get the Blog posting index? Any advice is greatly appreciated!

Set base-href to subfolders - problems?

A customer is using the <base>-tag in an odd way: <base href="http://domain.com/1.0.0/1/1/"> My own theory is that the subfolders are added as the root because of revision control. CSS, images and internal links are used like this:
internal link I ran a test with Xenu Link Sleuth and found many broken links on the site, but I can't say if it is due to the base-tag. I have read that the base-tag may cause problems in some browsers, but is this usage of base-tag bad in some SEO-perspective? I have a lot of problems with this customer and I want to know if the base-tag is a part of it.

Will errors on a subdomain effect the overall health of the root domain?

As stated in the question, we have 2 sub domains that contain over 2000 reported errors from SEOMOZ. The root domain has a clean bill of health, and i was just wondering if these errors on the sub-domains could have a negative effect on the root domain in the eyes of Google. Your comments will be appreciated. Regards Greg

Subdomain Removal in Robots.txt with Conditional Logic??

I would like to see if there is a way to add conditional logic to the robots.txt file so that when we push from DEV to PRODUCTION and the robots.txt file is pushed, we don't have to remember to NOT push the robots.txt file OR edit it when it goes live. My specific situation is this: I have www.website.com, dev.website.com and new.website.com and somehow google has indexed the DEV.website.com and NEW.website.com and I'd like these to be removed from google's index as they are causing duplicate content. Should I: a) add 2 new GWT entries for DEV.website.com and NEW.website.com and VERIFY ownership - if I do this, then when the files are pushed to LIVE won't the files contain the VERIFY META CODE for the DEV version even though it's now LIVE? (hope that makes sense) b) write a robots.txt file that specifies "DISALLOW: DEV.website.com/" is that possible? I have only seen examples of DISALLOW with a "/" in the beginning... Hope this makes sense, can really use the help!  I'm on a Windows Server 2008 box running ColdFusion websites.
