RE: Brackets in a URL String
Yes agree there are other more pressing issues to debate but I don't think this question is out of place. I welcome people to post any type of SEO question here no matter how silly they think it might be. We're all on different stages of learning, but more than once I have been inspired by a naive question to look up something which lead to a discovery of immense value and interest to me and others in the SEO community.
Brackets from what I can see do not represent a significant element, in theory they can act as a separator of different logical units of a URL (though there are much better ways to do that such as using hyphens). I would personally not use them and not sure if they represent a problem in way crawlers interpret URL structure.

RE: Google Displays Domain / URL Above Description?
Yup. This is pretty much default view for all my searches now. The who and authoriship seem very important to Google right now. So if you're nobody you won't do well. Issue for start-ups?

RE: Percentage of duplicate content allowable
That sounds like something Google will hate by default. Your problem there is page quantity to quality and uniqueness ratio.

RE: Percentage of duplicate content allowable
We're currently observing a crumbling empire of websites with auto-generated content. Google is somehow able to understand how substantial your content is and devalue the page and even the whole site if it does not meet their criteria. This is especially damaging for sites who have say 10% of great unique content and 90% of their pages are generated via tagging, browsable search and variable driven paragraphs of text.
Having citations is perfectly normal but I would include reference section just in case.

RE: Google Page Rank of my site has dropped from 4/10 to 3/10
Your Google PageRank went down immediately after some of your linking websites lost their PageRank or cut their links to you. Toolbar PageRank updates rarely so you couldn't see it until now. Timing with Panda is accidental and not related to your PageRank change. Nothing to worry about and keep up with great content and good design. New thing to keep an eye on is user experience, however links are still very strong as a factor so you should try to earn great links as well.

RE: Using overlay content on landing pages - possible? recommended?
We have implemented something similar in the past with no negative effects. Same deal with tabbed content. If this type of display is convenient for the user and not only served to search engines then you're within the search engine guidelines. Even if you do get in trouble (very unlikely) there is always a re-inclusion request in which you can explain things to Google.
One thing to keep in mind is Google's cloaking filter they've been writing about this recently as they start to compare what is displayed to them to what user would see. I cannot know exactly to what extent the site may vary in appearance with your overlay feature.

RE: What's your best hidden SEO secret?
That one single hour in each day when I get in the "zone" and do week's worth of work in a single shot. Still figuring out how to extend that for the full 8 hours

RE: Tactics to Influence Keywords in Google's "Search Suggest" / Autocomplete in Instant?
Going offline.
Have a TV or radio ad and tell people to search "your keyword".
I believe this was successfully executed for phrase "seo found" in Australia. http://www.google.com.au/search?q=seo%20found I was first suprised to see a peak in search volumes in Google Keyword Tool and was later told that they had a massive advertising campaign for this phrase.
This is something I intend to try in the future.

RE: .Co Domains - Any thoughts?
Just to add that I would personally be scared of having domainname.co if I know my competitor has domainname.com - too easy to spell it wrong and send free traffic the wrong way.

RE: Local Keyword vs Business Name in URL
I support this view. Let's not do the same damage to our branding as Yellow Pages did to various AAA Aarwark Plumbing type businesses.

RE: IP block in Google
You are likely using tools like SEO Elite etc which send fast queries. This type of software can be set to slower hit rate. I doubt you guys search that fast to be booted without use of software. Check your plugins and software - that would be my first recommendation.
I do get this from time to time when I try to hack URLs to death... but it only happens occasionally

RE: YoutTube vs Vimeo
Here's a dead obvious advantage of YouTube over Vimeo:
- YouTube profile page link is dofollow.
- Vimeo profile page link is nofollow.
Why is this important? Because PageRank flows to those pages internally and from other sources and in Vimeo's example it doesn't pass any love back to the author.

RE: Domain strategy for UK and USA
Having a TLD specific to a country/region makes sense not only from SEO but also business point of view. I understand what it means to start again and building links again from scratch however you have a good headstart and a super relevant link from your old juiced up site. Google will figure it out it's the same brand, country specific and will start treating it as a family of websites. Make sure you use all local signals (phone, address, business reg numbers and are present in local directories). When interlinking own sites ensure good disclosure is in place.

16%. That's the percentage of people who read everything you write word-for-word. That number hasn't changed in two decades, which tells us that we've never really learned how to write for the web. In this week's Whiteboard Friday, Dan Petrovic illustrates a new approach to writing for the web to increase reader engagement, and offers some tools and tips to help along the way.

“I'm going to register one hundred domains and link them all to my main website."
This notion hits most people in their early stages of discovering how search engine algorithms work. Many people give in to temptation and test it out, and some have even built elaborate schemes that appear to work for a while.

I love freestyle link building. There is hardly anything more satisfying than getting in the zone and branching out into countless search iterations plucking opportunities one by one, thinking of great content ideas, implementing it, sending it out and watching it hatch. This article, however, is not about that. Instead I will take you through methodology evolved within ...

Viral marketing. We've seen it, enjoyed it, passed it on, and thought, “I could do something like this for my clients.” Most of us, however, do not pass the “I could” stage while others experiment with varying degrees of success. One thing is for sure, a well-executed viral marketing campaign can have a profound effect on traffic and branding. This post will reflect on main characteristics of successful campaigns and cover observations with two successful viral content experiments.
